Mayurbhanj: A man was allegedly killed by his friends for not returning Rs 40 at Pathanpaka village in Bidyadhar Nagar under Kaptipada police limits of Mayurbhanj district, said police on Tuesday.

According to reports, the deceased, identified as Chama Suijoi had gone to a nearby market on September 17 and had not come back home. Following this, family members of Chama had lodged an FIR at Kaptipada police station, said sources.

Based on the complaint, police detained one Surendra Patra, who revealed during the interrogation that he and two of his friends, Suryakant Hembram and Nidhia Hembram, reportedly brothers, had murdered Chama and buried his body in the nearby forest on September 17.

“Along with Chama, Suryakant and Nidhia, I was playing cards. During the gambling, Chama had won Rs 40. However, when we sought the money back from him, he declined. Irate over it, Nidhia suggested to murder Chama. Later we killed him with a chain,” said Suryakant.

Meanwhile, police exhumed the body of Chama from the forest.

“A case was registered after a complaint was filed about the incident. Based on the complaint, the investigation is on,” Nalinikanta Mahapatra, Inspector-in-charge of Kaptipada police station.
