Cuttack: It seems that the awareness campaigns on the rising sexual assaults against minor girls have fallen on deaf years as police today arrested a person on charges of attempting to rape a 12-year-old girl in Banki of Cuttack district.

What was more shocking is that the accused happens to be the uncle of the minor girl.

As per the complaint lodged by the family members at the Banki police station, the incident occurred this morning when the girl had gone to the neighbour's house. Finding no one at home, the accused allegedly tried to assault her sexually.

Later, basing on the complaint, police arrested the accused and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Banki IIC, Biswaranjan Sahu, said, “The guardian of the girl lodged a complaint at the police station that their neighbour attempted to rape her. We are investigating the case and have also arrested the accused and are interrogating him.”

In one such incident in Keonjhar, the Telkoi police had arrested a youth for allegedly attempting to rape a minor girl in her house on Friday.

As per sources, the girl was sleeping when the accused, identified as Arakhyita Nayak of Bena village, barged inside in an inebriated state and allegedly tried to rape her. The family members lodged a complaint with the police following which the accused was arrested from his village.

Similarly, a seven-year-old girl of Derabish area in Kendrapara district was allegedly raped by a person of nearby Haladia village on May 23.

The incident came to the fore after a complaint was lodged against accused Mihir Kumar Singh at the Derabish police station last night. The Derabish Police immediately swung into action and arrested the accused, identified as Mihir Kumar Singh from Haldia village in Tangi and is interrogating him, sources said.
