Bhubaneswar:  In yet another crackdown on illegal drug trade, the Excise department today seized brown sugar weighing 17 gram and worth over Rs 1.5 lakh from Gurujanga area in Khurda district and arrested one person in connection with the incident.

In a bid to curb the rise in incidents of illegal trade of narcotics in Bhubaneswar and its other nearby areas, a special team of excise officials conducted simultaneous raids at several places in Khurda late yesterday night.

Excise sleuths arrested one Chabindra Prdahan, for being involved in the drug trade.

It is pertinent to mention here that with a spurt in drug peddling incidents in the Capital city over the past couple of months, it seems Bhubaneswar has now turned into a hub for such illicit narcotics trade.

Earlier on May 17 Central Excise Intelligence officials had seized brown sugar worth Rs 6.5 lakh from two different locations in Bhubaneswar and arrested two persons in connection with the same.

On March 3 during a joint operation by the Quick Action Team (QAT) and Laxmisagar police, brown sugar weighing 64 gram was seized near Jharpada over bridge in Bhubaneswar.

Prior to that, officials of the Excise Department has seized brown sugar worth Rs 38 lakh from Chintamaniswar and Haldipadia area in Bhubaneswar. Three persons including two women were also arrested in connection with the case.
