Cuttack: Continuing its crackdown on illegal drugs trade, officials of the Excise department seized nearly 60 gms of brown sugar after a raid in Cuttack today. The price of the seized contraband item is worth nearly Rs 6 lakh, informed sources.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of excise sleuths conducted a raid in Jagatpur area and seized the contraband item from one Sudhir Mohanty’s possession. The excise sleuths seized the contraband near Link Road in Cuttack while Mohanty was allegedly on his way to sell it, informed sources.

"We have detained the accused. Recently, we seized 211 gms of brown sugar from Jaleswar. It is suspected that the smugglers are from Jaleswar area," said Excise Intelligence department Inspector, Jagdish Chandra Samal.

Meanwhile, Police have arrested Mohanty and forwarded him to the court.

It is pertinent to mention here that illegal drug peddling is on the rise in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar with many seizures being made by police and excise officials of late.
