Bhubaneswar: In a joint operation by the Quick Action Team (QAT) and Laxmisagar police, brown sugar weighing 64 gram was seized near Jharpada over bridge in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off about a drug racket operation in Jharpada area of the city, the officials raided the area and arrested two persons in this connection- Lakhia Bindhani of Balasore district and Benudhar Das of Haldipadia area in Bhubaneswar.

It is pertinent to mention here that with a spurt in drug peddling incidents in the Capital city for the past couple of months, it seems Bhubaneswar has now turned into a hub for such illicit narcotics trade.

Earlier on February 8, the flying squad of Excise Department had busted a brown sugar racket by arresting a drug peddler from Samantarapur area in Khurda district and seized contraband weighing 128 gram worth Rs 13 lakh from his possession.

On February 7, the State Excise officials arrested a woman on charges of selling brown sugar in Bari area under Khandagiri Police limits in Bhubaneswar and seized 21 grams of brown sugar.

Prior to that, in a joint operation by Laxmisagar police and Quick Action Team (QAT), brown sugar weighing 19.4 gram was seized from a woman of Haladipadia slum in the Temple city.
