Kendrapara: Wanted sharp shooter and close aide of arrested gangster Tito, Bhabani Shankar Sahoo alias Babu Sahoo was nabbed after an encounter with the police near Ichhapur-Chhagaria Road here in the wee hours of Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of special squad and officials of Kendrapara Town police station intercepted Sahoo at around 3.45 am today while he was returning from Kendrapara Bazaar to his house in Madhial area.
In a bid to give a slip to the cops, Sahoo first opened fire on the police officials. In retaliation, police fired few rounds injuring Sahoo on his right leg. Sahoo was initially rushed to Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) and later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
After apprehending him, police also seized a gun and a motorbike from his possession. Meanwhile, a scientific team has rushed to the spot and initiated an investigation, sources said.
“We had been on the lookout for Sahoo for a while and were finally able to nab him. Over 50 cases are pending against him at different police stations in Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur district. He is also accused in murder of one Bibash Mohanty. He is involved in many other cases including extortion and tender fixing,” said a senior police official.
A few days back, another aide of gangster Tito, Chagala was killed in an encounter at Nabaghanpur village under Sadar police limits here.
Reportedly, Chagala had received bullet injuries on both his legs and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital. Later, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he had succumbed to his injuries.
