Sambalpur: Police on Sunday detained four persons including the prime suspect in connection with the alleged gang rape of a married woman under Ainthapali police station area in Sambalpur city on December 7.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the case, police registered a case and detained the four accused who are being interrogated.

According to sources, the woman had reportedly gone to Bareipali area for some work on Saturday evening when two men approached her and assured to drop her home. The duo took her to an isolated place where they alleged raped her. Later, two others joined them and raped the woman by confining her at a place near the National Highway.

The woman was found unconscious near Bareipali area on Sunday morning. She is currently undergoing treatment at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla and her condition is stated to be critical.

While Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kanwar Vishal Singh along with two DSPs, one SDPO and IICs and met the survivor, further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, questions are being raised over the security and police patrolling measures as the incident took place a few metres away from the National Highway.
