Kalahandi: A three-year-old girl was allegedly strangulated to death by her stepmother at Lakhapadar village under Narla Police Station in Kalahandi district on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Nandini Sahu, daughter of Jugeswar Sahu.

Meanwhile, Narla police detained Nandini’s stepmother Asha Sahu and father Jugeswar Sahu after a complaint was lodged by the girl's maternal uncle, Sobabhana.

As per reports, Nandini was playing outside her house yesterday. Later, Asha allegedly strangulated her to death after she returned home. Though the exact reason behind Asha resorting to such extreme step is still unclear, police have initiated a probe into the matter.

“When I came back home at around 7 PM, I saw she (Nandini) was lying on the bed. When I checked on her, she was already dead and blood was oozing out of her mouth. Her mother (Asha) was also present in the house,” said Jugeswar, deceased girl's father.

On the other hand, Asha stated, “I was sleeping after having some medicines and she (Nandini) was also sleeping besides me. I do not know what actually happened.”

After getting information, deceased Nandini’s uncle rushed to the spot and later lodged a complaint at the police station accusing Asha of murder.

“Based on the complaint, we have detained the father and step-mother of the girl and interrogating them,” informed Narla Police Station Inspector-in-Charge Sanjay Mallik.
