Washington: The total number of global coronavirus cases has topped 95.5 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.03 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
In its latest update on Tuesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 95,530,563 and 2,039,283, respectively.
The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 24,073,555 and 398,977, respectively, according to the CSSE.
India comes in second place in terms of cases at 10,571,773, while the country's death toll soared to 152,419.
The other countries with more than a million confirmed cases are Brazil (8,511,770), Russia (3,552,888), the UK (3,443,350), France (2,972,889), Turkey (2,392,963), Italy (2,390,102), Spain (2,336,451), Germany (2,059,382), Colombia (1,923,132), Argentina (1,807,428), Mexico (1,641,428), Poland (1,438,914), South Africa (1,346,936), Iran (1,336,217), Ukraine (1,201,894) and Peru (1,060,567), the CSSE figures showed.
Brazil currently accounts for the second highest number of fatalities at 210,299.
The countries with a death toll above 20,000 are Mexico (140,704), the UK (90,031), Italy (82,554), France (70,826), Russia (65,059), Iran (56,886), Spain (53,769), Colombia (49,004), Germany (47,263), Argentina (45,832), Peru (38,770), South Africa (37,449), Poland (33,407), Indonesia (26,282), Turkey (24,161), Ukraine (21,847) and Belgium (20,435).
UK reports 37,535 new Covid cases, 599 deaths
Another 37,535 people in Britain have tested positive for Covid-19, the lowest daily increase since the start of the year, according to official figures released on Monday.
The daily figure, down from 38,598 on Sunday, brought the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 3,433,494, the data showed, Xinhua news agency reported.
Another 599 have died within 28 days of a positive test. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 89,860, the data showed.
The latest figures were revealed as Britain is racing against time to roll out its coronavirus vaccine program in a bid to bring the pandemic under control.
People aged 70 and over and those listed as clinically extremely vulnerable in England have begun to receive the first dose of coronavirus vaccine from Monday.
Nadhim Zahawi, the minister responsible for the vaccine rollout, said despite "lumpy" vaccine supply, he was "confident" that Britain is able to vaccinate all 15 million people in the top four priority groups by mid-February.
US Covid cases surpass 24 million
The total number of Covid-19 cases in the US topped 24 million on Monday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
US Covid-19 case count rose to 24,018,793 with a total of 398,307 deaths, according to the CSSE tally, Xinhua news agency reported.
With 3,005,830 cases reported, California turned to be the first US state to have more than 3 million cases. Texas identified 2,127,745 cases, followed by Florida with 1,579,281 cases and New York with 1,255,971 cases. Illinois also registered more than 1 million cases.
Other states with over 630,000 cases include Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arizona and New Jersey, the CSSE data showed.
By far, the US remains the nation worst hit by the pandemic, with the world's most cases and deaths, making up more than 25 per cent of the global caseload and over 19 per cent of the global deaths.
France registers 403 new Covid-19 deaths
France on Monday reported 403 new Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, the heaviest daily toll since November 24, raising the country's coronavirus-related fatalities to 70,686, according to figures from the health authorities.
A further 3,736 people tested positive for the coronavirus in one day, significantly lower than Sunday's figure of 16,642 new cases. But Monday's numbers of new Covid-19 cases are often smaller since fewer people conducted tests during weekends, Xinhua news agency reported.
The cumulative total of infection now stands at 2,914,725 in France.
As of Monday, 25,619 Covid-19 patients were still treated in hospitals across the country, including 2,813 on ventilators. These two figures -- key gauge to assess the health system's ability to cope with the epidemic outbreak -- rose by 350 and 37 respectively in one day.
Since France launched its vaccination campaign in late December, 479,873 people have received their first dose, with 57,746 inoculated on Monday.
