Bhubaneswar: With the number of novel coronavirus cases in the country growing at the rate of 711 per day during the last week (April 5-11), the Union Health Ministry today focused on the number of beds available in the dedicated Covid hospitals across the country.
The big revelation surfaced is Gujarat has the single largest Covid-19 hospital in country with 1200 beds; whereas Andhra Pradesh tops the country by virtue of having the largest number of four specialty hospitals with a total bed strength of 1680. The hospitals have the facility of defibrillators.
The point to note here is Defibrillation is a technique used in emergency medicine to terminate ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia. It uses an electrical shock to reset the electrical state of the heart so that it may beat to a rhythm controlled by its own natural pacemaker cells.
However, Odisha emerges at the top by setting up as many as 10 exclusive COVID hospitals in the State. The bed strength hovers at around 1,950. The Odisha government has set a target of building 34 COVID-19 hospitals having a bed strength of 6000.
But the Odisha government has till date not specified the total number of ICU beds and isolation bed strength in its Covid dedicated hospitals. An estimate shows the total ICU linked beds in the 10 exclusive Covid-19 hospitals in the state at around 234 only.
As per the data available, Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of isolation beds in the country. The state has a massive 22,049 beds in isolation wards.
Impact of Lockdown in India
