Washington: The total number of global coronavirus cases has topped 106.8 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.33 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
In its latest update on Wednesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 106,880,652 and 2,339,991, respectively.
The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 27,189,188 and 468,103, respectively, according to the CSSE.
India comes in second place in terms of cases at 10,847,304.
The other countries with more than a million confirmed coronavirus cases are Brazil (9,599,565), the UK (3,983,756), Russia (3,953,970), France (3,419,210), Spain (3,005,487), Italy (2,655,319), Turkey (2,548,195), Germany (2,302,051), Colombia (2,166,904), Argentina (1,993,295), Mexico (1,946,751), Poland (1,556,685), Iran (1,481,396), South Africa (1,479,253), Ukraine (1,293,892), Peru (1,191,221), Indonesia (1,174,779), Czech Republic (1,045,132) and the Netherlands (1,023,779), the CSSE figures showed.
Brazil currently accounts for the second highest number of Covid-19 fatalities at 233,520, followed by Mexico (168,432) on the third place and India (155,158) on the fourth.
Meanwhile, the nations with a death toll above 20,000 are the UK (114,066), Italy (92,002), France (80,295), Russia (76,347), Spain (63,061), Germany (62,409), Iran (58,625), Colombia (56,507), Argentina (49,566), South Africa (46,869), Peru (42,467), Poland (39,360), Indonesia (31,976), Turkey (26,998), Ukraine (25,022), Belgium (21,423) and Canada (20,914).
UK records another 12,364 coronavirus cases, 1,052 deaths
Another 12,364 people in Britain have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 3,972,148, according to official figures released on Tuesday.
The country also reported another 1,052 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 113,850. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The latest figures were revealed as Britain is stepping up efforts to speed up vaccine rollout to bring the pandemic under control.
More than 12.6 million people in Britain have been given the first jab of the coronavirus vaccine, according to the latest official figures. Britain aims to complete the vaccination of the top priority groups, which cover 15 million people, by mid-February and offer all adults their first dose by autumn.
Earlier on Tuesday, British Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced tough fines up to 10,000 pounds (about $13,780.77) and jail terms up to 10 years for those breaking quarantine rules designed to prevent new coronavirus variants from entering the country.
Hancock also announced that from Monday, all international arrivals will be required by law to take further coronavirus tests on day two and day eight of their quarantine.
