WhatsApp OTP Scam: Easy Steps To Stay Safe From Hackers

New Delhi/ Bhubaneswar: Needless to say how with the changing times, millions of users rely on the internet for transmission of text, image and video messages. And with WhatsApp emerging as one of the most popular mobile messaging apps worldwide and more users getting connected to family and friends through the platform each day, the chances of falling prey to cyber fraud have also gone up.

Every social platform has pros and cons and WhatsApp is no different. Latest reports suggest that scammers and hackers are now using OTP tricks to gain illegal access to WhatsApp accounts and steal personal or sensitive data of the users.

The OTP scam which is currently doing rounds allows scammers to hack into your WhatsApp account using an OTP (One Time Password).

If in case you are targeted, the hackers might send you a message in WhatsApp from an unknown number or from a friend’s number claiming that they are is some sort of emergency. They might then request you to forward the OTP to them, citing that it was mistakenly sent to you in a text message.

Remember one thing. If you receive any such message, DO NOT share the OTP or indulge in any further conversation with the scammer/hacker, as this could give them complete access to your WhatsApp account and you could be locked out of your own account.

Cyber experts have further warned that even in case you get a WhatsApp message from a friend or a known contact asking for an OTP code, DO NOT respond or follow his/her request, rather you should call him/her to verify the authenticity and confirm whether the message was actually sent by him/her.

HOW CAN YOU SECURE YOUR ACCOUNT AND STAY SAFE FROM HACKERS?

In order to stay safe from this OTP scam, users can enable two-factor authentication on WhatsApp. This apart, the user needs to ensure that s/he does not share OTP or any other private or sensitive information with anyone via WhatsApp.

Follow these simple steps to secure your account:

STEP 1: Open WhatsApp, then click on the three dots on the top right corner.

STEP 2: Tap on the Settings option and then on the Account option.

STEP 3: Now tap on Two-step verification.

STEP 4: You will get an enable option. When you enable that, you will be asked to enter a 6-digit pin sent to you by WhatsApp.

STEP 5: WhatsApp will ask you to enter the pin twice, followed by your email address.

STEP 6: Once you confirm the email address, your two-step verification will be activated.

STEP 7: You also have the option to disable or change the pin using the same steps.

The users should note that once the two-step authentication is enabled, WhatsApp will ask you to enter your password at regular intervals.

Statistics reveal, from nearly 1 billion monthly active users in February 2016, WhatsApp monthly active users have skyrocketed to over 2 billion as on March 2020.

Artemis I: NASA Starts Assembling Moon Mission Rocket

Washington: In preparation for the Artemis I launch next year, NASA has stacked the first piece of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket on the mobile launcher. Artemis I will be an uncrewed flight to test the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft as an integrated system ahead of crewed flights to the Moon in the Artemis programme.

Stacking operations began on November 19 with engineers transporting a booster segment from the Rotation, Processing and Surge Facility to the 525-foot-tall Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB).

Each booster consists of five segments and will provide seven million pounds of thrust for the liftoff from Launch Pad 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the US space agency said this week.

When assembled, each booster will be about half the length of a football field, and together they will generate more thrust than 14 four-engine jumbo commercial airliners.

Once stacked, the SLS rocket will stand taller than the Statue of Liberty and have about 15 per cent more thrust at liftoff than the Apollo programme Saturn V rocket, making it the most powerful rocket ever built, NASA said.

“Stacking the first piece of the SLS rocket on the mobile launcher marks a major milestone for the Artemis Programme,” said Andrew Shroble, an integrated operations flow manager with Jacobs, a company working with the US space agency on the Artemis programme.

“It shows the mission is truly taking shape and will soon head to the launch pad.”

The solid rocket boosters are the first components of the SLS rocket to be stacked and will help support the remaining rocket pieces and the Orion spacecraft.

Over the next several weeks, workers will use an overhead crane that can hold up to 325 tonnes, to lift the remaining segments one by one and place them carefully onto the 380 feet tall mobile launcher, the structure used to process, assemble, and launch the SLS rocket.

On Artemis II, Orion will carry a crew of astronauts around the Moon and back, and Artemis III will land the first woman and next man on the lunar surface by 2024.

Subsequent missions will explore more of the Moon and test the technologies and procedures needed for human exploration of Mars.

SLS and Orion, along with the human landing system and the Gateway in orbit around the Moon, are NASA’s backbone for deep space exploration.

SpaceX Launches Starlink Satellites For Cheaper Internet

San Francisco: Elon Musk-run SpaceX on Wednesday launched another successful mission carrying 60 more Starlink satellites onboard a Falcon 9 rocket into low-Earth orbit that will join the rest in beaming affordable Internet.

The reusable Falcon 9 rocket made a record-breaking seventh trip this time.

This was SpaceX’s 16th Starlink mission and the company has to date launched nearly 1,000 small satellites for its constellation.

SpaceX recently presented the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Starlink internet performance tests, showing it was capable of download speeds of between 102Mbps to 103Mbps, upload speeds of 40.5Mbps to not quite 42Mbps, and a latency of 18 milliseconds to 19 milliseconds.

“Once these satellites reach their target position, we will be able to roll out a fairly wide public beta in the northern US and hopefully southern Canada,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet.

“Other countries to follow as soon as we receive regulatory approval,” he added.

It is expected that there will be gigabit speeds on offer, meaning up to 1Gbps Internet speeds, with a fairly low latency of up to 25ms.

Starlink plans to offer these Internet services for around $80 per month, which is priced at par if not lower than similar speed broadband plans in most countries, including India.

The company is geared up for a public beta of the affordable satellite broadband service.

Twitter Unveils Emojis To Raise Awareness On Women's Rights

San Francisco: In partnership with UN Women and the UN Human Rights Office, Twitter is launching custom emojis to spread awareness on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Wednesday and Human Rights Day on December 10.

The emojis will appear when people tweet with the hashtags #GenerationEquality, #OrangeTheWorld, #16Days, #HumanRightsDay, and other localised hashtags, Twitter said on Tuesday.

Twitter said it is also supporting local nonprofits across the world by providing “Ads for Good” grants to several partners to ensure that they can use the power of Twitter’s advertising platform to reach more people.

Throughout the next #16Days, the microblogging platform will also amplify various regional campaigns and messages about the importance of gender equality and combatting violence against women to increase engagement and awareness.

“We have seen the whole world respond to the coronavirus pandemic with all hands on deck, and with responsive investment and protocols backed by determination. Violence against women is also a pandemic — one that predates the virus and will outlive it,” Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director, UN Women, said in a statement.

“As we face COVID-19’s devastation, there has never been a more important moment to put our combined resources and commitment behind the biggest issues, and work with partners like Twitter to end violence against women and girls for good.”

In addition to elevating the public conversation, Twitter has also partnered with health authorities and nonprofit organizations in various markets to expand its #ThereIsHelp notification service.

When people search terms associated with gender-based violence on Twitter, they will receive a notification with contact information for local hotlines and other resources to encourage them to reach out for help.

Since the initial rollout at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Twitter has expanded the prompts to reach 24 markets spanning countries such as India, Australia, Mexico, Thailand, the UK, the US, and more.

Cases of violence against women have increased this year.

According to the United Nations Population Fund, for every three months the Covid-19 lockdown continues, an additional 15 million women are expected to be directly affected by violence.

New Delhi: Google Pay is set to kill the peer-to-peer payments facility on its web app in January and is going to add a fee for instant money transfers, the media reported.

Google Pay offered the ability to manage payments as well as send money from both a mobile app or from pay.google.com.

Now, Google has released a notice on the web app that notifies users that the site will no longer work from January next year.

“Starting early in 2021, you won’t be able to use pay.google.com to send and receive money from other people. To send and receive money, use the new Google Pay app,” the company informed.

While you can still manage payment methods on the web app, peer-to-peer payments will cease to exist.

Google also clarified on a support page that the original Google Pay app will stop working in January, reports 9to5Google.

Google Pay will also add a fee on instant money transfers.

“It can take 1–3 business days when you transfer money to your bank account. Debit card transfers are usually instant. There is a fee of 1.5% or $.31 (whichever is higher), when you transfer out money with a debit card,” the company said on its support page.

Google last week introduced several features in its Pay feature for both Android and iOS users which have been first rolled out in the US.

The company said it is working with trusted financial institutions to create Plex, a new mobile-first bank account integrated into Google Pay.

Google To Postpone Enforcement Of 30% In-App Purchase Policy

Seoul/New Delhi: Facing backlash from developers, Google said on Monday that it will postpone enforcing a 30 per cent commission on in-app purchases of digital content from its Play Store from next January to next September.

Under the new policy set to be adopted in late September, Google plans to take a 30 per cent commission on all digital content purchases by users from app developers.

Like Apple, Google also collects a 30 per cent commission on in-app purchases.

Apple last week announced it will reduce the standard commission on its App Store from 30 per cent to 15 per cent for app developers with yearly proceeds of less than $1 million from next year.

According to market watchers, Google apparently postponed the policy as it faced strong backlash from South Korean developers, reports Yonhap news agency.

While Google has taken a 30 per cent cut for all in-app purchases on the Play store through its billing system, some apps have circumvented the rule by using other systems, such as direct credit card payments.

The National Tax Service earlier said it will consider various measures to impose taxes on Google’s income from the fees and will closely monitor the tech giant’s revenue in the domestic application market.

Google has claimed in the past the policy change will not affect the majority of app developers, as nearly 97 percent of those that sell digital goods already use Play’s billing system.

It added that just 2 per cent of South Korean app developers would be affected by the policy change.

Last week, a group of South Korean lawmakers called on Google to follow Apple’s move to lower its commission for app market purchases amid concerns of local app developers over high fees.

NASA Scientists Find Signs Of Megafloods On Mars

New York: A recent finding of NASA scientists hints at possibilities of life existence on Mars. According to a analysis data collected by space research center’s Curiosity rover, scientists have found that floods of unimaginable magnitude once washed through Gale Crater on the red planet’s equator around four billion years ago.

The raging megaflood, likely touched off by the heat of a meteoritic impact, which unleashed ice stored on the Martian surface — set up gigantic ripples that are tell-tale geologic structures familiar to scientists on Earth.

“We identified megafloods for the first time using detailed sedimentological data observed by the rover Curiosity,” said co-author Alberto Fairen, a visiting astrobiologist at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.

“Deposits left behind by megafloods had not been previously identified with orbiter data.”

As is the case on Earth, geological features, including the work of water and wind have been frozen in time on Mars for about four billion years. These features convey processes that shaped the surface of both planets in the past.

This case includes the occurrence of giant wave-shaped features in sedimentary layers of Gale crater, often called “megaripples” or antidunes that are about 30-feet high and spaced about 450 feet apart, according to study lead author Ezat Heydari, Professor of Physics at Jackson State University in Mississippi, US.

The antidunes are indicative of flowing megafloods at the bottom of Mars’ Gale Crater about four billion years ago, which are identical to the features formed by melting ice on Earth about two million years ago, Heydari said.

The most likely cause of the Mars flooding was the melting of ice from the heat generated by a large impact, which released carbon dioxide and methane from the planet’s frozen reservoirs.

The water vapour and release of gases combined to produce a short period of warm and wet conditions on the red planet.

Condensation formed water vapour clouds, which in turn created torrential rain, possibly planetwide.

The Curiosity rover science team has already established that Gale Crater once had persistent lakes and streams in the ancient past.

These long-lived bodies of water are good indicators that the crater, as well as Mount Sharp within it, were capable of supporting microbial life.

“Early Mars was an extremely active planet from a geological point of view,” Fairen said.

“The planet had the conditions needed to support the presence of liquid water on the surface — and on Earth, where there’s water, there’s life. So, early Mars was a habitable planet,” he said.

“Was it inhabited? That’s a question that the next rover Perseverance … will help to answer.”

Perseverance, which launched on July 30, is scheduled to reach Mars on February 18, 2021.

Washington: The US space agency along with the European Space Agency (ESA) has successfully launched a satellite to monitor rising global sea level.

The joint US-European satellite built to monitor global sea levels lifted off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California late on Saturday.

About the size of a small pickup truck, the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite will extend a nearly 30-year continuous dataset on sea level collected by an ongoing collaboration of US and European satellites, while enhancing weather forecasts and providing detailed information on large-scale ocean currents to support ship navigation near coastlines.

“The Earth is changing, and this satellite will help deepen our understanding of how,” said Karen St. Germain, director of NASA’s Earth Science Division.

“The changing Earth processes are affecting sea level globally, but the impact on local communities varies widely. International collaboration is critical to both understanding these changes and informing coastal communities around the world.”

The spacecraft is named in honour of Michael Freilich, the former director of NASA’s Earth Science Division, who was a leading figure in advancing ocean observations from space.

“Freilich was a tireless force in Earth sciences. Climate change and sea level rise know no national borders, and he championed international collaboration to confront the challenge,” said Josef Aschbacher, ESA (European Space Agency) Director of Earth Observation Programmes.

Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich will continue the sea level record that began in 1992 with the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite and continued with Jason-1 (2001), OSTM/Jason-2 (2008), and eventually Jason-3, which has been observing the oceans since 2016.

The satellite will be followed in 2025 by its twin, Sentinel-6B.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said: “Whether 800 miles above Earth with this remarkable spacecraft or traveling to Mars to look for signs of life, whether providing farmers with agricultural data or aiding first responders with our disasters programme, we are tirelessly committed not just to learning and exploring, but to having an impact where it’s needed”.

“The data from this satellite, which is so critical for climate monitoring and weather forecasting, will be of unprecedented accuracy,” said EUMETSAT Director-General Alain Ratier.

Global sea level is rising approximately 0.13 inches (3.3 millimeters) a year. That’s 30 per cent more than when NASA launched its first satellite mission to measure ocean heights in 1992.

Good news for all the OTT fans who are bored with watching television. Streaming giant Netflix on Friday announced to make its platform free for the December 5-6 weekend in India.

Anyone in India can watch all the blockbuster films, the biggest series, award-winning documentaries, and reality shows for two days starting from 12 midnight on December 5.

Last month, the OTT streaming company announced plans to give its users in India access to free streaming for a weekend.

“We think that giving away everyone in a country access to Netflix for free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have, the service and how it works,” Greg Peters, COO and Chief Product Officer at Netflix, said during the company’s earnings call.

“At Netflix, we want to bring the most amazing stories from across the world to all fans of entertainment in India. It’s why we’re hosting StreamFest: an entire weekend of free Netflix,” the company said in a statement.

To access it, visit netflix.com/StreamFest, sign up with your name, email or phone number, and password, and start streaming no credit or debit card or payment needed.

“Anyone who signs in during StreamFest gets one stream in standard definition so, no one else can use the same login information to stream,” said -Monika Shergill, Vice President, Content, Netflix India.

Content streaming giant Netflix last month admitted that it has much work to do in countries like India.

Blue Ring Nebula Mystery Solved After 16 Years

Washington: After studying the mysterious Blue Ring Nebula with multiple Earth- and space-based telescopes for 16 years, scientists may have finally discovered what led to its formation.

The nebula — a cloud of gas in space — is likely composed of debris from two stars that collided and merged into a single star, said a study published in the journal Nature.

The object was first spotted in 2004 when scientists with NASA’s space-based Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) found that it was an object unlike any they had seen before in our Milky Way galaxy: a large, faint blob of gas with a star at its centre.

Though it does not actually emit light visible to the human eye, GALEX captured the blob in ultraviolet (UV) light and thus appeared blue in the images; subsequent observations also revealed a thick ring structure within it.

So the team nicknamed it the Blue Ring Nebula.

Over the next 16 years, they studied it with several telescopes, including W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea in Hawaii.

“We think there are probably plenty of young remnants of stellar mergers in our galaxy, and the Blue Ring Nebula might show us what they look like so we can identify more of them,” said study co-author Brian Metzger of Columbia University in the US.

While merged star systems are thought to be fairly common, they are nearly impossible to study immediately after they form because they’re obscured by debris kicked up by the collision.

Once the debris has cleared — at least hundreds of thousands of years later — they are challenging to identify because they resemble non-merged stars.

The Blue Ring Nebula appears to be the missing link: astronomers are seeing the star system only a few thousand years after the merger, when evidence of the union is still plentiful.

It appears to be the first known example of a merged star system at this stage, said the study.

San Francisco: Echoing social media sites like Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram that have disappearing posts, Twitter is launching tweets that disappear in 24 hours called Fleets globally including in India.

“Today, we’re launching Fleets so everyone can easily join the conversation in a new way — with their fleeting thoughts,” Twitter‘s Design Director Joshua Harris and Product Manager Sam Haveson wrote in a blog post.

Meant for sharing momentary thoughts, Fleets only stick around for 24 hours.

Twitter said that its tests of Fleets in Brazil, Italy, India, and South Korea, were encouraging.

The results showed that Fleets helped people feel more comfortable joining the conversation and Twitter saw that people with Fleets talk more on Twitter.

“Those new to Twitter found Fleets to be an easier way to share what’s on their mind. Because they disappear from view after a day, Fleets helped people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings,” Harris and Haveson wrote.

“These are early findings from our tests and we’re excited to learn more about how Fleets are used by you.”

One can Fleet text, reactions to tweets, photos or videos and customise their Fleets with various background and text options.

To share a tweet in a Fleet, you need to tap the “Share” icon at the bottom of the Tweet and then tap, “Share in Fleet.”

Then, add what you think about it with some text or emojis.

Twitter said that stickers and live broadcasting will be available in Fleets soon.

“Your followers can see your Fleets at the top of their home timeline. Anyone who can see your full profile can see your Fleets there too. If you have open Direct Messages, anyone can reply to your Fleets,” Harris and Haveson wrote.

New Delhi: To help users identify which online meetings may be at the risk of being disrupted or ‘zoombombing’, video conferencing platform Zoom has launched a new feature called ‘At Risk Meeting Notifier ‘.

The ‘At Risk Meeting Notifier’ scans public posts on social media sites and other public online resources for Zoom meeting links and will notify users if it believes their meetings are in danger of being Zoom-bombed.

Zoombombing episodes were quite widespread this year as people began using Zoom in the social distancing times during remote work.

“When it finds publicly posted meeting information that indicates a given meeting may be at high risk of being disrupted, we notify account owners and admins by email,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

The new feature is enabled by default and users don’t need to take any action for their accounts.

Zoom said that “if a given meeting is posted about many times or with certain known disruptor hashtags, we may flag it to you as being at high risk of being disrupted”.

The company said that if you would like to keep your meeting public, “we strongly recommend that you convert the meeting to a webinar, because a webinar will give you control over who participates with video, audio, chat, and screen sharing”.

Zoom said that at the end of Q2, it had approximately 370,200 customers with more than 10 employees, up approximately 458 per cent from the same quarter last fiscal year.

The video meeting app has also launched an online event platform and marketplace called OnZoom for paid users of the platform to create, host, and monetise events like fitness classes, concerts, stand-up or music lessons.

Google Rolls Out New Settings In Gmail, Smart Features To Offer Personalised User Experience

San Francisco: Google said it will further put users in control of their data and the Google experience, with a new setting for smart features and personalisation in Gmail.

Soon, Gmail users will be able to see a new setting for controlling whether user data in Gmail, Meet and Chat can be used to offer “smart” features in these and other Google products.

“Think: tabbed inbox, Smart Compose and Smart Reply in Gmail; reminders when your bills are due in the Google Assistant; and restaurant reservations in Google Maps,” said Maalika Manoharan, Product Manager at Google.

The ability to turn on (or not) some of these individual smart features is not new.

“What’s new is a clearer choice over the data processing that makes them possible,” she said in a statement.

The company said that as with all Google products, Gmail, Meet and Chat are secure-by-design to help protect your data and safeguard your privacy.

“As before, these smart features are provided by using automated algorithms, not manual review. And, Google ads are not based on your personal data in Gmail, no matter which choice you make,” Manoharan emphasised.

Google introduced auto-delete as the default this year to make control over data more automatic.

If you decide not to use smart features and personalization, you will still be able to use Gmail and our other products, the company said.

If you decide later on that these features are helpful and you’d like to turn them on, you can do so in your Gmail settings.

Washington: SpaceX launched four astronauts to the International Space Station on the first full-fledged taxi flight for NASA by privately owned spacecraft.

The Falcon rocket on Sunday thundered into the night from Kennedy Space Center with three Americans and one Japanese, the second crew to be launched by SpaceX. The Crew Dragon lifted off atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 7.27 p.m. EST on Sunday.

The spacecraft carrying NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, and Shannon Walker, along with Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has safely reached orbit, NASA said.

“This is a great day for the United States of America, and a great day for Japan, and we look forward to many more years of a great partnership… All the way to the Moon,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said on the launch of the mission.

Crew-1 is the first crew rotation flight of a US commercial spacecraft with astronauts to the space station following the spacecraft system’s official human rating certification.

The four astronauts will spend six months at the space station for their research.

The Crew Dragon is scheduled to dock to the space station at about 11 p.m. on Monday, NASA said.

Sidelined by the coronavirus himself, SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk was forced to monitor the action from afar. He tweeted that he “most likely” had a moderate case of COVID-19. NASA policy at Kennedy Space Center requires anyone testing positive for coronavirus to quarantine and remain isolated.

Sunday’s launch follows by just a few months SpaceX’s two-pilot test flight. It kicks off what NASA hopes will be a long series of crew rotations between the U.S. and the space station, after years of delay. More people means more science research at the orbiting lab, according to officials.

Cheers and applause erupted at SpaceX Mission Control in Hawthorne, California, after the capsule reached orbit and the first-stage booster landed on a floating platform in the Atlantic. Musk tweeted a single red heart.

New Delhi: Facebook has rolled out Vanish Mode on its Messenger and Instagram services that will let users send text, photos and voice messages which will disappear once seen and the chat window is shut down.

Currently, the Snapchat-inspired Vanish Mode will work on individual chats and not group chats, reports The Verge.

Vanish Mode is available for Messenger in the US as well as some other countries starting from Friday.

Some users may have already received Vanish Mode in the chat settings on Messenger.

On Instagram, some elements of Vanish Mode are already part of the core direct messaging feature set.

“Vanish Mode is similar in ways to Messenger’s existing secret conversation mode that lets you enter an end-to-end encrypted chat that’s saved only on your device, although the new mode is designed to delete anything sent forever once it’s been viewed,” the report mentioned.

Vanish Mode will appear in both Messenger and Instagram as a distinct option you can turn on and off in the settings of any particular chat message.

Facebook said the mode will be opt-in only.

Last week, Facebook-owned WhatsApp launched the much-awaited ‘Disappearing Messages‘ on its platform for both Android and iOS users that will automatically delete new messages sent to a chat after seven days when turned on.

In a one-to-one chat, either person can turn disappearing messages on or off. In groups, admins will have the control on the new feature.

Once enabled, new messages sent in the individual or group chat will disappear after seven days.

Novel Method To Preserve Vaccines Without Refrigeration Developed By Scientists

Washington: Chemical engineers have developed a novel method to stabilise vaccines with proteins instead of relying on refrigeration. The innovation may help to reduce wastage of the therapeutic during transportation and storage.

The scientists, including those from the Michigan Technology University in the US, said vaccines typically require shipping temperatures ranging from two to eight degrees Celsius, and half of them are wasted annually because they aren’t kept cold enough.

According to the study, published in the journal Biomaterials Science, the viruses in vaccines, which train our cells to identify and vanquish viral invaders, unfold when it’s hot, or when there’s space to move around.

“You wouldn’t take a steak and leave it out on your counter for any length of time and then eat it. A steak has the same stability issues — it has proteins, fats, and other molecules that, in order to keep them stable, we need to keep them cold,” said Caryn Heldt, a co-author of the study from the Michigan Technological University.

The scientists explained that heat provides energy for viruses to shake themselves apart, and not being crowded gives them the room to fall apart, adding that to maintain stability vaccines need either a cold environment or crowding.

In the current study, the researchers developed a way to mimic the body’s crowded environment in vaccines without relying on refrigeration.

They used synthetic proteins that have positive or negative charges and stick together and form a separate liquid phase when put in a solution — a process called complex coacervation.

According to the researchers, this liquid phase wraps around the outer cover of viruses, holding the inner material together “like a burrito’s tortilla.”

“Coacervate materials are something that we actually see all of the time in our daily lives,” said Sarah Perry, study co-author from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the US.

“Many shampoos undergo coacervation. When you put the shampoo onto your wet hair, the water that is present dilutes the shampoo, causing it to phase separate and facilitating the removal of dirt and oil from your hair,” Perry explained.

The researchers said this process works for nonenveloped viruses, such as polio the and common cold virus, which have no lipid, or fatty layer, around them.

“Looking forward, we want to think more about the specific materials that we use in our coacervates. Crowding alone isn’t a universal strategy to improve virus stability,” Perry said.

“We need to understand how different polymers interact with our viruses and how we can use this to create a toolbox that can be applied to future challenges,” she added.

The scientists added that the amino acids part of the synthetic protein are the same building blocks as in our bodies. Further the scientists clarified that they are not adding anything to the vaccines that aren’t already known to be safe

PUBG To Be Back In India With Indian Subsidiary

New Delhi: Bringing cheers to Indian mobile gamers ahead of Diwali, PUBG Corporation on Thursday said it is making a comeback to the India market with the creation of an Indian subsidiary and a new game.

With its South Korean parent company Krafton, Inc., PUBG Corp also plans to make investments worth $100 million in India to cultivate the local video game, esports, entertainment, and IT industries, the company said.

The immensely popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile app was among the 118 Chinese apps that the Indian government banned in September over national security concerns.

To get the ban lifted, PUBG Corp made the decision to no longer authorise the PUBG Mobile franchise to China-based Tencent Games in India.

Confirming this on Thursday, PUBG said it is preparing to launch PUBG Mobile India, a new game created specifically for the Indian market.

The Indian subsidiary will hire over 100 employees specialising in business, esports, and game development, PUBG Corp said.

In addition to establishing a local office, the company will look to actively collaborate and leverage local businesses to strengthen its gaming service, it added.

The company also revealed plans to provide a secure and healthy gameplay environment alongside investments to cultivate local video game, esports, entertainment, and IT industries.

To assuage privacy and data security concerns, PUBG said it will conduct regular audits and verifications on the storage systems holding Indian users’ personally identifiable information to reinforce security and ensure that their data is safely managed.

To build and foster a healthy gameplay environment, in-game content will be improved and tailored to reflect local needs, it added.

Various aspects of the game will be customized for Indian gamers, such as the game now being set in a virtual simulation training ground, new characters automatically starting clothed, and green hit effects to reflect the virtual nature of the game.

The company will include a feature that places restrictions on game time to promote healthy gameplay habits for younger players.

The company, however, did not disclose the launch date of PUBG Mobile India.

New Delhi: Google has announced that it will soon start charging for Google Photos storage once users upload more than 15GB onto their accounts.

Starting June 1, 2021, all new photos and videos backed up in high quality will count toward the free 15GB of storage that comes with Google Account or any additional storage that user may have purchased, the same way other Google services like Google Drive and Gmail already do.

“Any photos or videos you’ve uploaded in High quality before June 1, 2021 will not count toward your 15GB of free storage. This means that photos and videos backed up before June 1, 2021 will still be considered free and exempt from the storage limit. You can verify your backup quality at any time in the Photos app by going to back up and sync in Settings,” Shimrit Ben-Yair, VP, Google Photos said in a statement.

Once the change takes effect, more than 80 per cent of current Google Photos users should still be able to store about three years of content with that free 15GB. Google will notify you in the app and by email once you get close to hitting your 15GB limit.

The only users that will be exempt from this policy change are Pixel smartphone users, who will still be able to upload “high quality” photos without any limits after June next year.

Google claims that the reason for the change is to provide users with a higher quality experience and plans to further develop Google Photos in the future.

It seems like an easy way for Google to push people to pay for its Google One plans. The company announced the basic plan starting from 100 GB for the price of Rs 130 per month, and Rs 1,300 a year to a 30 TB plan, which costs Rs 19,500 per month.

New Delhi: In a bid to recreate some festival fervour in the social distancing times, Google has created a virtual Diwali experience that everyone can be a part of — via a new Augmented Reality (AR) experience.

Google Arts & Culture has partnered with over 20 cultural heritage organisations to launch Diwali @Home.

“Striking images and immersive online stories weave a journey through the festival of lights, its legends and folklore, and dive into the sights, sounds and smells of an iconic festival,” the company said in a statement late on Wednesday.

“Decorate your space virtually with diyas (lamps), detonate virtual anar (firecrackers), for some explosive, playful fun, and watch how your space sparkles!”

The colours, food, festivities and nostalgia of Diwali are being shared through new online exhibitions from partner institutions including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Indian Museum, National Museum and many more.

“There’s also plenty of hands-on fun for families with an interactive Diwali colouring book. Find it with Google Search, simply by searching for “Diwali” on your phone”.

One can watch a video conversation between Amish Tripathi, author and Director of The Nehru Centre in London, and Neil MacGregor, art historian, broadcaster and former museum director, on Diwali and why it’s particularly special this year.

New Delhi: Facebook on Tuesday made a new shopping button in WhatsApp live globally, including in India, to help people check out available products and make purchases right from a chat.

The tool will make it easier for people to discover a business’ catalog so they know what goods or services it offers.

Previously, people had to click into the business’ profile to see if the business had a catalog.

“Now, when a person sees the shopping button, which looks like a storefront icon, they will immediately know the business has a catalog so they can browse products and start a conversation about an item they see with just one tap,” the company said in a statement.

This will also make it easier for businesses to have their products discovered which can help increase sales.

More than 175 million people message a WhatsApp Business account every day, and more than 40 million people view a business’ catalog each month — including more than 3 million in India.

According to a recent survey, 76 per cent of adults in India said that “I am more likely to do business with/purchase from a company that I can contact via messaging than one that I cannot.”

The new shopping button is available now across the world and will replace the voice call button.

To find the voice call button, simply tap on the call button to select either a voice or video call.

“In the future, we’ll make it possible to add items to a cart and check out, all within WhatsApp,” the company said last month.

Facebook said it will finally start charging companies using WhatsApp for Business, as it expanded ways for its users to check out available products and make purchases right from a chat.

Some 50 million businesses message a WhatsApp Business account every day and this move will help WhatsApp continue building a business of its own while it provides and expands free end-to-end encrypted text, video and voice calling for more than 2 billion people.

San Francisco: Facebook has announced to send Groups that violate its content rules on a sort of probation, like forcing Group moderators to manually approve all posts for 60 days.

The move is to slow the spread of misinformation on its platform, Facebook told The Washington Post on Sunday.

Facebook will restrict all Groups with multiple posts violating its community standards.

“Moderators for the groups will have to approve any posts manually for 60 days, and there’s no appeal available for groups on probationary status”.

During the probationary period, Facebook will keep tabs on how the moderators of restricted groups deal with posts.

If they continue to allow posts that break its rules, Facebook may shut down the Groups.

“We are temporarily requiring admins and moderators of some political and social groups in the US to approve all posts, if their group has a number of Community Standards violations from members,” a Facebook spokesperson told The Verge.

Facebook has witnessed a meteoric rise in the spread of misinformation on its platform as crucial votes were being tallied to select the next US president.

In a post to a group on Facebook’s internal message board, one employee alerted their colleagues to a nearly 45 per cent increase in the metric, which assesses the potential for danger based on hashtags and search terms in the last election week, reports BuzzFeed News.

The social networking giant last week banned a fast-growing group called “Stop the Steal”.

The group was formed by Republican supporters and “members used it to sow discord about the vote-totaling process, organize protests, and make threats”.

The ‘Stop the Steal’ group amassed more than 360,000 members in less than 48 hours before it was shut down by Facebook.

Facebook announced several measures to reduce the spread of misinformation on its platforms before the November 3 election.

It also labeled a couple of tweets on “election theft” and mail-in ballots as misleading by Donald Trump.

Yahoo Mail To Suspend Automatic Email Forwarding For Free Users

New Delhi: Yahoo Mail will discontinue automatic email forwarding for free users from January 1 next year, in order to reduce hacking attempts.
Verizon, which bought Yahoo in 2017, announced the move in an update and the existing users will need to get a Pro account, which costs $34.99 per year, or $3.49 a month.

“Beginning January 1, 2021, automatic forwarding of emails from your Yahoo inbox to a third party email account will no longer be a feature of free Yahoo Mail accounts,” the company informed.

“Upgrade to Yahoo Mail Pro or subscribe to Access + Forwarding to use the auto forwarding feature at this time”.

According to a report in ZDNet, automatic email forwarding is often abused.

“Hackers who breach email accounts often add their own email address as an automatic email forwarding rule to receive carbon copies of all messages a victim receives,” the report mentioned.

If your free Yahoo Mail account is set up to automatically forward emails to a third party inbox such as Gmail, those emails will stop being delivered to the third party address on January 1, 2021.

“You’ll still be able to view your emails in your Yahoo mailbox through your web browser at mail.yahoo.com or via the Yahoo Mail apps. Yahoo Mail Pro subscribers will not be affected by this change,” the company said.

Verizon said it regularly evaluates its products and services against current security standards and have decided to remove this feature to help ensure free Yahoo Mail accounts remain secure.

“The change will help us focus on building the best new features and experiences for our Yahoo Mail users”.

Facing a steady decline in usage over the last several years, Yahoo last month announced to shut down Yahoo Groups from December 15.

The Yahoo Groups service was launched in 2001 and could not complete against new platforms like Reddit, Google Groups and Facebook Groups.

The US wireless communications service provider Verizon bought Yahoo’s tottering internet business for a mere $4.8 billion in 2017.

San Francisco: The popular mobile game Fortnite developer Epic Games announced a new promotion that allows players who make a real-money purchase in-game and are new Disney Plus subscribers to get up to two months of the streaming service for free.

The offer is valid November 10th starting at 7 P.M. Eastern Time (ET) through December 31st for players 18 years old or older in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand where Disney Plus is available, The Verge reported.

Any real-money purchases made in Fortnite beginning November 6th, including the purchase of its-in game V-Bucks currency, will qualify users for the offer.

However, purchases made with V-Bucks are not eligible.

According to the company, once the two-month Disney Plus trial ends, users will be charged the monthly rate for a subscription unless they cancel.

Also, Fortnite lovers who use Apple devices may soon play the popular game once again courtesy the Nvidia GeForce cloud gaming service that runs in the web browser Safari, the BBC reported.

Nvidia currently offers ‘GeForce Now’ for Mac, Windows, Android and Chromebook computers.

Epic Games, developer of popular game Fortnite which is locked in a battle with Apple, last month filed another case against the company.

In the latest salvo, Epic Games said Epic did not ‘steal’ anything that belonged to Apple.

The latest Epic move against Apple after a US judge ruled in October that Apple can keep blocking the popular game Fortnite permanently but restrained the Cupertino-based iPhone maker from retaliating against the open and real-time 3D creation platform Unreal Engine owned by Epic Games which is also the developer of Fortnite.

India's One More Eye In Sky, Radar Imaging Satellite And 9 Foreign Sats

Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh): India on Saturday successfully placed into orbit one more eye in the sky — a radar imaging earth observation satellite EOS-01 (formerly RISAT-2BR2) — and nine other foreign satellites in a text book style.

India’s new earth observation satellite up in the sky will send good clarity images which will be used for agriculture, forestry and disaster management support, said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the country’s space agency.

The images captured by the satellite will also be used for surveillance purposes while ISRO is silent on this aspect.

The EOS-01 with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can shoot pictures in all weather conditions.

The satellite can take pictures day and night and will be useful for surveillance as well as civilian activities.

At 3.12 p.m the PSLV-C49 rocket, with lift off weight of 259 ton and standing around 44.4 metres tall with a one-way ticket hurtled itself towards the skies ferrying the EOS-01, which is is a 630 kg earth observation satellite.

Piggybacking on that were the nine foreign satellites from: Lithuania (1-R2, technology demonstrator), Luxembourg (4 maritime application satellites by Kleos Space) and the US (4-Lemur multi mission remote sensing satellites).

With the fierce orange flame at its tail, the rocket slowly gathered speed and went up while the rocket’s engine noise like a rolling thunder adding to the thrill.

At 3.31 p.m. the rocket ejected EOS-01, followed by the nine other foreign satellites.

Cumulatively till date ISRO has put into orbit 328 foreign satellites all for a fee.

The PSLV in normal configuration is a four stage/engine expendable rocket powered by solid and liquid fuels alternatively with six booster motors strapped on to the first stage to give higher thrust during the initial flight moments.

But the 44.4 metre tall PSLV rocket that flew on Saturday was the DL variant having only two strap-booster motors.

This rocket variant was used the first time to put the Microsat R satellite into orbit on January 24, 2019.

The Indian space agency has PSLV variants with two and four strap-on motors, larger PSLV-XL and the Core Alone variant without any strap-on motors.

The choice of the rocket to be used for a mission depends on the weight of the satellite and the orbit where the satellite has to be orbited.
