Facebook Spent Rs 171 Crore On Mark Zuckerberg's Security In 2020

San Francisco: Facebook spent more than $23 million (about Rs 171 crore) to provide security for its CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2020.

The company’s annual reviews of company security “identified specific threats to Zuckerberg,” according to a proxy statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), reports The Verge.

“He is synonymous with Facebook, and as a result, negative sentiment regarding our company is directly associated with, and often transferred to, Mr. Zuckerberg,” read the statement.

Facebook spent $23 million for personal security at Zuckerberg’s residences and for travel for him and his family. The Facebook CEO also received an additional $10 million to put toward security personnel and other security costs.

The cost of base security was up to $13.4 million last year, compared to $10.4 million the year prior.

“Under Mr Zuckerberg’s overall security programme, we pay for costs related to personal security for Mr. Zuckerberg at his residences and during personal travel, including the annual costs of security personnel for his protection and the procurement, installation, and maintenance of certain security measures for his residences,” the company said.

“We also provide an annual pre-tax allowance of $10 million to Mr Zuckerberg to cover additional costs related to his and his family’s personal security,” Facebook added.

In addition, Zuckerberg uses private aircraft for personal travel in connection with his overall security programme.

On certain occasions, he may be accompanied by guests when using private aircraft.

The costs of Zuckerberg’s security programme vary from year to year depending on requisite security measures, his travel schedule, and other factors.

The company said that the increased costs in 2020 were primarily due to regular personal travel, costs relating to security protocols during the Covid-19 pandemic, increased security coverage during the 2020 US elections and other periods with increased security risk, and market increases in the costs of security personnel.

Zuckerberg has requested to receive only $1 in annual salary and does not receive any bonus payments, equity awards, or other incentive compensation, Facebook added.

NASA delays first flight of Mars helicopter to April 14

Washington: NASA has decided to postpone the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter’s first experimental flight to April 14 after a test completed earlier than planned.

The flight was earlier scheduled for April 11.

“During a high-speed spin test of the rotors on Friday, the command sequence controlling the test ended early due to a ‘watchdog’ timer expiration,” NASA said in a statement on Saturday.

“This occurred as it was trying to transition the flight computer from ‘Pre-Flight’ to ‘Flight’ mode. The helicopter is safe and healthy and communicated its full telemetry set to Earth,” the US space agency said.

The watchdog timer oversees the command sequence and alerts the system to any potential issues.

It helps the system stay safe by not proceeding if an issue is observed and worked as planned.

The helicopter team is reviewing telemetry to diagnose and understand the issue, following which they will reschedule the full-speed test, NASA said.

The Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, is a technology demonstration to test powered flight on another world for the first time. It hitched a ride to Mars on the Perseverance rover, which made a February 18 touch down on the Red Planet.

Once the rover reaches a suitable “helipad” location, it will release Ingenuity to perform a series of test flights over a 30-Martian-day experimental window.

For the first flight, the helicopter will take off a few feet from the ground, hover in the air for about 20 to 30 seconds, and land.

That will be a major milestone: The very first powered flight in the extremely thin atmosphere of Mars.

After that, the team will attempt additional experimental flights of incrementally farther distance and greater altitude. After the helicopter completes its technology demonstration, Perseverance will continue its scientific mission, NASA said.

NASA Seeks To Send 1st Person Of Colour To Moon In 2024

Washington: Acting NASA administrator Steve Jurczyk has sought to not only land the first woman on the Moon but also the first person of colour under the Artemis programme.

The Artemis III mission is expected to launch the first woman and next man to the Moon in 2024.

The Joe Biden-Kamala Harris Administration submitted to Congress on Friday the president’s priorities for fiscal year 2022 discretionary spending.

“The president’s discretionary request increases NASA’s ability to better understand Earth and further monitor and predict the impacts of climate change. It also gives us the necessary resources to continue advancing America’s bipartisan Moon to Mars space exploration plan, including landing the first woman and first person of colour on the Moon under the Artemis programme,” Jurczyk said in a statement on Friday.

“This $24.7 billion funding request demonstrates the Biden Administration’s commitment to NASA and its partners who have worked so hard this past year under difficult circumstances and achieved unprecedented success,” he added.

With a budget increase of more than 6 per cent from the previous year, NASA will continue to boost its ingenuity in exploration, technology, aeronautics and science.

NASA has welcomed the nomination of former Democratic Senator Bill Nelson as its next administrator, as the US space agency works towards the key Artemis III mission.

The Biden administration aims to Keep NASA on the path to landing the first woman and the first person of colour on the Moon under the Artemis programme.

“This goal aligns with President Biden’s commitment to pursue a comprehensive approach to advancing equity for all,” said the US space agency.

NASA has completed a crucial hot fire test of the core stage of Space Launch System (SLS) rocket which is designed to power future Moon missions under the agency’s Artemis programme.

The successful test is a critical milestone ahead of the agency’s Artemis I mission, which will send an uncrewed Orion spacecraft on a test flight around the Moon and back to Earth, paving the way for future Artemis missions with astronauts.

New Delhi: In what could help paralysed people to use their mind to operate a smartphone in the near future, Elon Musk-run brain-machine interface company Neuralink on Friday posted a YouTube video where a monkey can be seen playing a video game by navigating an on-screen cursor using his mind.

Pager, a nine-year-old macaque monkey, had a Neuralink chip implanted about six weeks before the video was shot.

The monkey was first trained to play the Pong video game with a joystick for a banana reward.

The Neuralink device recorded information about which neurons were firing as the money played the video game.

Later, the joystick was removed, and the monkey was still able to play the game using only his mind.

“A monkey is literally playing a video game telepathically using a brain chip,” Must said in a tweet on Friday.

“First @Neuralink product will enable someone with paralysis to use a smartphone with their mind faster than someone using thumbs,” he added.

Musk further added: “Later versions will be able to shunt signals from Neuralinks in the brain to Neuralinks in body motor/sensory neuron clusters, thus enabling, for example, paraplegics to walk again”.

In February this year, the Tesla CEO revealed that a monkey has been wired up to play video games with its mind.

Musk said that Neuralink put a computer chip into the monkey’s skull and used “tiny wires” to connect it to its brain.

Musk, who also spoke about space travel, colonies on Mars, crypto, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Covid-19 vaccines, said Neuralink is trying to figure out if it can use its chips to get monkeys to play “mind Pong” with each other.

“That would be pretty cool,” said Musk, who is CEO of Neuralink, in addition to SpaceX and Tesla.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Neuralink’s team of around 100 people is trying to develop an implementable computer-brain interface.

The aim of Neuralink is to increase the rate at which information can flow from the human brain to a machine.

In 2020, the company publicly shared a wireless version of the Link that was able to stream 1,024 channels of action potentials (also called “spikes”) wirelessly and in real time.

“We demonstrated its functionality by recording somatosensory (touch) signals in pigs exploring their environment. The electrodes were placed in a part of the brain involved in processing signals from the pig’s exquisitely sensitive snout. As it snuffled about, the responses of the neurons to sensory cues could be readily observed,” the company explained.

Modern Human Brain Originated 1.7 Mn Years Ago In Africa

London: Modern human brain structures developed 1.5 to 1.7 million years ago in the African Homo populations and after they had already begun walking on two feet and had even started spreading out of Africa, according to a study.

The first ancestors from the genus Homo emerged in Africa about 2.5 million years ago and walked upright, but had
primitive ape-like brains — only about half the size of present-day humans, said the researchers from the University of Zurich (UZH) in Switzerland.

Besides the size, the team also found that their location and organisation of individual brain regions differed
from the modern human brain.

“The features typical to humans are primarily those regions in the frontal lobe that are responsible for planning and executing complex patterns of thought and action, and ultimately also for language,” said Marcia Ponce de Leon, from the varsity’s Department of Anthropology .

Since these areas are significantly larger in the human brain, the adjacent brain regions shifted further back, de Leon noted.

The team used computed tomography to examine the skulls of Homo fossils that lived in Africa, Georgia and the Java in Indonesia 1 to 2 million years ago. They then compared the fossil data with reference data from great apes and humans.

They found that the first Homo populations outside Africa — in present-day Georgia — had brains that were just as primitive as their African relatives.

And their brains were not particularly large or modern until around 1.7 million years ago.

However, these humans were quite capable of making numerous tools, adapting to the new environmental conditions of Eurasia, developing animal food sources, and caring for group members in need of help.

“It is likely that the earliest forms of human language also developed during this period,” said anthropologist de Leon.

Egypt Unveils Discovery Of 3,000-Yr-Old 'Lost Gold City'

Cairo: An Egyptian archaeological mission announced the discovery of a 3000-year-old “Lost Gold City” (LGC) in the monument-rich city of Luxor.

The mission, headed by renowned Egyptian archeologist Zahi Hawass, in collaboration with the country’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, found the city that was lost under the sand, reports xinhua news agency.

The city known as “The Rise of Aten”, dates back to the reign of Amenhotep III, and continued to be used by king Tutankhamun.

“Many foreign missions worked in this area in search for the mortuary temple of Tutankhamun because the temples of both Horemheb and Ay were found here,” Hawass said in a statement on Thursday, adding those missions failed to find the city.

Terming the discovery as the largest city ever found in Egypt, Hawass explained that “the LGC was founded by one of the greatest rulers, Amenhotep III, the ninth king of the 18th dynasty who reigned from 1391 till 1353 B.C.”.

Egypt Unveils Discovery Of 3,000-Yr-Old ‘Lost Gold City’

His son, the famous Amenhotep IV (Akhenaton), helped Amenhotep III in ruling the city for eight years, he added.

The LGC was the largest administrative and industrial settlement in the era of the Egyptian empire on the western bank of Luxor, he said, pointing out the mission unearthed some of the city’s streets that are flanked by houses, with walls are up to 3 metres high.

The Egyptian mission, that started working on the discovery in September 2020, has found a well-preserved city with almost complete walls, and with rooms filled with tools of daily life.

“The discovery of this lost city is the second most important archeological discovery since the tomb of Tutankhamun,” said Betsy Brian, professor of Egyptology at Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

She added the discovery will help shed light on one of history’s greatest mystery: why did Akhenaten and Nefertiti decide to move to Amarna, which is an extensive Egyptian archeological site that represents the remains of the capital city newly established in 1346 B.C. and built by Akhenaten in late the eighth dynasty.

The excavation area is sandwiched between Rameses III’s temple at Medinet Habu and Amenhotep III’s temple at Memnon.

The mission’s first goal was to date the establishment of the city, according to the statement that added hieroglyphic inscriptions found on clay caps of wine vessels.

The new discovery consisted of three royal palaces of Amenhotep III, as well as the Empire’s administrative and industrial center based on the historical references.

Rings, scarabs, coloured pottery vessels, and mud bricks bearing seals of Amenhotep III’s cartouche that were found during the discovery confirmed the dating of the city, Hawass added.

In the southern part of the city, the mission found a bakery, a cooking and food preparation area completed with ovens and storage pottery.

“From its size, we can state the kitchen was catering a very large number of workers and employees,” Hawass added.

The second part of the city, which is still partly uncovered, is predicted to be the administrative and residential district with larger and well-arranged units.

It is fenced in by a zigzag wall, with only one access point leading to internal corridors and residential areas.

Zigzag walls are one of the rare architectural elements in ancient Egyptian architecture, mainly used at the end of the 18th Dynasty, Hawass added.

Meanwhile, the third area is the workshop that included the production area for the mud bricks used to build temples and annexes. The bricks have seals bearing the cartouche of Amenhotep III.

Investigations are underway over the finds of two unusual burials of a cow or bull found inside one of the rooms, as well as a burial of a person with arms outstretched to his side, and remains of a rope wrapped around his knees, he added.

Global Warming Raising Risk Of Collapsing One-Third Of Antarctic Ice Shelf Area

London: As climate change is making temperatures soar, more than a third of the Antarctic’s ice shelf could be at risk of collapsing into the sea, and causing global sea-levels to rise, new research has shown.

The study, led by a researcher at the University of Reading in England, found that if global temperatures reach 4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, 34 per cent of the area of all Antarctic ice shelves — around half a million square kilometres — including 67 per cent of ice shelf area on the Antarctic Peninsula, would be at risk of destabilisation.

Ice shelves — Larsen C, Shackleton, Pine Island and Wilkins — were identified as most at-risk under 4 degrees Celsius of warming, due to their geography and the significant runoff predicted in those areas.

Limiting temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius, as mandated by the United Nations under the Paris Climate agreement, would halve the risk and potentially avoid significant sea level rise, said the study, published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal.

“If temperatures continue to rise at current rates, we may lose more Antarctic ice shelves in the coming decades,” said Ella Gilbert, a research scientist at the varsity’s Department of Meteorology.

“Limiting warming will not just be good for Antarctica — preserving ice shelves means less global sea level rise, and that’s good for us all,” she added.

When melted ice accumulates on the surface of ice shelves, it can make them fracture and collapse spectacularly.

Ice shelf vulnerability from this fracturing process was forecast under 1.5 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees Celsius and 4 degrees Celsius global warming scenarios, which are all possible this century.

“Ice shelves are important buffers preventing glaciers on land from flowing freely into the ocean and contributing to sea level rise. When they collapse, it’s like a giant cork being removed from a bottle, allowing unimaginable amounts of water from glaciers to pour into the sea,” Gilbert said.

“We know that when melted ice accumulates on the surface of ice shelves, it can make them fracture and collapse spectacularly,” Gilbert said.

San Francisco: As invite-only audio chat app Clubhouse becomes the hot property in the Silicon Valley, Facebook has launched another experiment called Hotline that is a mashup of Instagram Live and Clubhouse.

The feature under test allows creators to speak to an audience who can then ask questions through either text or audio, reports Tech Crunch.

“However, unlike Clubhouse, creators can opt to turn their cameras on for the event, instead of being audio-only,” the report said on Tuesday.

At present, users can type in their questions, then join the host “on stage,” when it’s their turn.

The guests are represented by their profile icon and are audio-only when on stage.

“But in the settings, there’s an option for the listener to toggle on video that’s not yet functional for today’s test,” the report noted.

As the questions are asked, users can react with emoji including clapping hands, fire, heart, laughter, surprise and thumbs up.

Another difference between Hotline and Clubhouse is that Hotline events are recorded.

“Despite the similarities with Clubhouse, Hotline has a different look and feel because of its use of video, text-based questions, upvoting and because it’s recorded”.

Alarmed at the growing popularity of Clubhouse, several tech giants are working on a rival app and Twitter has started testing ‘Spaces’ on Android.

Microsoft-owned LinkedIn is working on a similar app for over 740 million members in more than 200 countries.

New Delhi: Google-owned YouTube, which has removed over 83 million videos and seven billion comments for violating its community guidelines since 2018, has announced to build greater transparency and accountability with making its Violative View Rate (VVR) metric public.

The company said that it will release VVR as part of its Community Guidelines Enforcement Report (that first came out in 2018), to let the world know that it’s doing a better job of enforcing its own moderation rules.

The report will have a separate section called ‘Views’ which will lay out historical and the Q4 (Oct-Dec 2020) VVR data, along with details on its methodology.

“Going forward, we will be updating this data quarterly. VVR helps us estimate the percentage of the views on YouTube that come from violative content,” Jennifer O’Connor, Director, YouTube Trust and Safety said in a statement late on Tuesday.

Put simply, the Violative View Rate (VVR) helps determine what percentage of views on YouTube comes from content that violates its policies.

“The most recent VVR is at 0.16-0.18 per cent which means that out of every 10,000 views on YouTube, 16-18 come from violative content,” the company informed.

This is down by over 70 per cent when compared to the same quarter of 2017, it added.

The company calculates VVR by taking a sample of videos on YouTube and sending it to its content reviewers.

“However, the VVR will fluctuate — both up and down. For example, immediately after we update a policy, you might see this number temporarily go up as our systems ramp up to catch content that is newly classified as violative,” the company noted.

The company said that with the help of machine learning, it is now able to detect 94 per cent of all violative content on YouTube by automated flagging, with 75 per cent removed before receiving even 10 views.

San Francisco: Facebook-owned WhatsApp is reportedly testing the ability to easily migrate chat history between an iPhone and an Android device.

According to a 9To5Google report, this feature is part of a strategic change in the WhatsApp app.

The company had been exploring the possibility of using WhatsApp on multiple devices at the same time and the ability to migrate chat history between iOS and Android is part of this effort, the report said.

When the user tries to link a device having a different operative system to his WhatsApp account, it’s always needed to update to the latest WhatsApp update available on the App Store or TestFlight, in order to avoid any compatibility error with the Android version, reports WABetaInfo.

The ability to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple devices is one of the most requested features by users, as well as an iPad version of Instagram.

WhatsApp now has more than 1.5 billion monthly active users (MAUs) who are exchanging nearly 60 billion messages on a single day.

On February 19, 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion, its largest acquisition to date. It currently has over 200 million monthly active users in India.

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed an advanced chaff technology which will protect naval ships against enemy missile attack.

Defence laboratory Jodhpur (DLJ), a DRDO laboratory, has indigenously developed three variants of this critical technology, namely Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR), Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR) and Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR) meeting Indian Navy’s qualitative requirements.

Recently, Indian Navy conducted trials of all three variants in the Arabian Sea on Indian Naval Ship and found the performance satisfactory.

Chaff is a passive expendable electronic countermeasure technology used worldwide to protect naval ships from enemy’s radar and RF missile seekers.

“The importance of this development lies in the fact that very less quantity of chaff material deployed in the air acts as a decoy to deflect enemy’s missiles for the safety of our ships,” the DRDO stated.

DRDO has also gained the expertise to meet the futuristic threats from adversaries, which is a unique technology not available from outside. The technology is being given to industries for production in large quantities.

Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral G. Ashok Kumar has applauded the DRDO efforts in developing strategically important technology indigenously in a short span and cleared for bulk production.

Facebook Data Of Over 53Cr Users, Including 61 Lakh Indians Leaked

New Delhi: Personal data of nearly 533 million (53.3 crore) Facebook users, including 61 lakh Indians, remerged online after a hacker posted the details on a digital forum.

The leaked data includes Facebook ID numbers, profile names, email addresses, location information, gender details, job data, and other details.

The easy availability of such data may make users more vulnerable to cybercrime, although Facebook has said that this is “old data”.

“All 533,000,000 Facebook records were just leaked for free. This means that if you have a Facebook account, it is extremely likely the phone number used for the account was leaked,” tweeted Alon Gal, CTO of security firm Hudson Rock.

“I have yet to see Facebook acknowledging this absolute negligence of your data,” he added.

Facebook has confirmed the leak to The Record.

“This is old data that was previously reported on in 2019. We found and fixed this issue in August 2019,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report late Saturday.

With the data now entering the public domain, there is a real danger that this information can be widely used by cybercriminals for email or SMS spam, robocalls, extortion attempts, threats and harassment, etc.

The data is reportedly broken up into download packages by country.

As Cambridge Analytics still haunts nearly 87 million users, including over 5 lakh users from India, this has come as the biggest ever leak of a social media platform that has billions of users.

In January this year, reports first surfaced that the phone numbers of 533 million users were currently being sold via a bot on encrypted messaging platform Telegram, which came from a Facebook vulnerability that was patched by the social network in 2019.

According to a report in Motherboard, the person selling the database full of Facebook users’ phone numbers ($20 per number) lets customers lookup those numbers by using an automated Telegram bot.

Gal had then said: “It is very worrying to see a database of that size being sold in cybercrime communities, it harms our privacy severely and will certainly be used for smishing (the fraudulent practice of sending text messages) and other fraudulent activities by bad actors.”

However, this time, the Facebook data leak has been published with more details.

In December last year, reports surfaced that a bug exposed the personal information like email addresses and birthdays of Facebook-owned Instagram users.

Saugat Pokharel, an experienced bug hunter from Nepal, discovered it. The attack used Facebook’s Business Suite tool, available to any Facebook business account, reported The Verge.

According to a Facebook spokesperson, the bug was only accessible for a short period of time during a small test.

New Delhi: Are you aware that any single app on your smartphone can see every other app that you have installed on your device, thus accessing sensitive information like dating preferences, banking information, political affiliation and password management etc? Google has announced to change this system on its Play Store from May 5.

In an update, Google has said that app developers will have to provide a solid reason for why the tech giant should let them access other apps on users’ smartphones, reports arstechnica.

Currently, Android 11 apps that request the “Query_All_Packages” permission can see the full list of apps you have stored on your device.

Google has now updated its Developer Programme Policy, restricting which apps are allowed to use the permission.

“Apps that have a core purpose to launch, search, or interoperate with other apps on the device may obtain scope-appropriate visibility to other installed apps on the device,” Google said.

There’s an exception for financial apps like banking apps and P2P wallets, which the page says “may obtain broad visibility into installed apps solely for security-based purposes.”

If your app meets the policy requirements for acceptable use of the “Query_All_Packages” permission, you will be required to declare this and any other high risk permissions using the declaration form in Play Console.

“Apps that fail to meet policy requirements or do not submit a Declaration Form may be removed from Google Play. Important: If you change how your app uses these restricted permissions, you must revise your declaration with updated and accurate information,” Google warned.

“Deceptive and non-declared uses of these permissions may result in a suspension of your app and/or termination of your developer account”.

For apps that have to interact with other apps, Google wants developers to use app-discovery APIs instead of just pulling the entire app list.

The ‘Query_All_Packages’ permission was added in Android 11, so it only applies to apps targeting Android 11’s API level, which is “API Level 30.”

The Play Store’s restrictions also apply to apps targeting API level 30 and up, which means not many apps will be counted to date for such restrictions.

New Delhi: Already available on Android and iOS under testing, the new Clubhouse-like audio chat rooms feature called Spaces by Twitter will soon be available on desktops too.

App researcher Jane Manchun Wong first spotted the arrival of Spaces on the web version.

“Twitter is working on @TwitterSpaces preview cards for the web app,” she posted in a tweet.

After first testing its audio chat feature Spaces with a small group of people on iOS, Twitter last month said it is now expanding the test to Android users in India, to give them a chance to join, listen, and speak in live, host-moderated audio conversations.

Currently, the feature is available as an early preview for a select few Android users who are part of the app’s Beta programme in the country.

In the feature, users can create a Space’ that their followers can join to participate in a conversation.

Anyone on Twitter can listen in on the conversation, though only the host can control who gets to speak.

The move comes at a time when invite-only, audio-chat app Clubhouse is fast gaining popularity among the social media users.

Tech companies like LinkedIn and Spotify are also working on Clubhouse-like live audio features, while Facebook is also reportedly working on such feature.

Novel Technique For Tracking Eruptions From Sun To Be Used In India's First Solar Mission

New Delhi: Scientists have developed a new technique to track the huge bubbles of gas, threaded with magnetic field lines, which are ejected from the sun disrupting space weather and causing geomagnetic storms, satellite failures, and power outages, the Department of Science and Technology said Thursday.

The new technique will be used in India’s first solar mission Aditya-L1.

As the ejections from the sun, technically called Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), cause various disturbances of the space environment, forecasting their arrival time is very important. However, forecasting accuracy is hindered by limited CME observations in interplanetary space, the DST statement said.

A software named Computer Aided CME Tracking Software (CACTus) based on a computer vision algorithm was so far used to detect and characterise such eruptions automatically in the outer corona where these eruptions cease to show accelerations and propagate with a nearly constant speed, it said.

However, this algorithm could not be applied to the inner corona observations due to the vast acceleration experienced by these eruptions.

This severely limited the capability to track the eruptions as CMEs accelerate in the lower corona. Moreover, with the advancement in space technology, there has been a tremendous increase in the amount of data obtained from spacecraft, according to the statement.

Identifying and tracking solar eruptions in huge number of images can become tedious if done manually, the statement said.

A research led by Ritesh Patel, Vaibhav Pant, and Prof. Dipankar Banerjee from Aryabhatta Research Institute of observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, along with their collaborators from Royal Observatory of Belgium, has led to the development of an algorithm, CMEs Identification in Inner Solar Corona (CIISCO), to detect and track the accelerating solar eruption in the lower corona, the statement said.

CIISCO has been successfully tested on several eruptions observed by space observatories, including Solar Dynamics Observatory and Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory, PROBA2/SWAP launched by NASA and ESA, respectively.

The parameters determined by CIISCO are useful to characterise these eruptions in the lower corona, a region where the properties of such eruptions are less known.

An implementation of CIISCO on the large volume of data available from space observatories mentioned above will be helpful to improve our understanding of eruptions in the inner corona.

As India’s first solar mission, Aditya-L1, will be observing this region of the solar corona, implementation of CIISCO on the Aditya-L1 data will provide new insight into the CME properties in this less explored region.

The research was published in the Solar Physics journal.

Twitter Tests New E-Commerce Features For Tweets

San Francisco: Twitter has announced that it is adding stickers to its ephemeral, Snapchat Stories-like Fleets, which are available for users on both the Android and iOS platforms.

While making a Fleet, users will be able to add stickers by tapping the smiley face icon on the bottom row of the screen.

“Your Fleets just got an upgrade,” the micro-blogging site wrote on its own platform.

“Now you can express yourself in the conversation with stickers. Add GIFs and Twemojis to a Fleet by tapping the smiley icon, on Android and iOS,” it added.

According to The Verge, Twitter is adding a collection of its own animated stickers and emojis — the latter of which the company calls “Twemoji”. And if you search for something at the top of the screen, Twitter will pull up GIFs sourced from Tenor and Facebook-owned Giphy.

Similar feature is already available on other platforms like Snapchat or Instagram.

The company unveiled Fleets back in November 2020 for all the users worldwide.

Twitter said that its tests of Fleets in Brazil, Italy, India and South Korea were encouraging. The results showed that Fleets helped people feel more comfortable joining the conversation and Twitter saw that people with Fleets talk more on the platform.

One can Fleet text, reactions to tweets, photos or videos and customise their Fleets with various background and text options.

New Delhi: The low-end version of the battle royale game PUBG called Lite is officially closing down on April 29.

PUBG Lite was introduced in 2019 for entry-level mobile devices. The Indian government banned both PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite on September 2 last year.

The news of PUBG Lite’s shut down was confirmed by the developers Krafton via a message on its official website.

“We are deeply grateful for the passion and support from the astounding number of PUBG Lite fans that have been with us. During the strenuous times of the Covid-19 pandemic, we hope that PUBG Lite was able to provide our fans a fun way to stay safe,” the developer said.

“Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close service after much deliberation and the time has come for our journey to end. We regretfully inform you that service of PUBG Lite is scheduled to end on April 29th, 2021 (UTC),” the company added.

PUBG Lite Facebook will be open even after the game service termination until further notice.

“We would like to convey our sincerest apology as well as our deepest appreciation to everyone. We truly hope you have enjoyed your time with us and please look forward to our future endeavours,” the developers said.

PUBG Lite was among one of the most popular games of the early pandemic months.

The game was banned under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act in India. PUBG Corporation later announced that they were withdrawing their partnership with Tencent, and will work with the Indian government to look for a quick resolution.

PUBG, which has more than 600 million downloads and 50 million active players globally, had nearly 33 million users in India.

New Delhi: Google-owned YouTube has confirmed it is experimenting with hiding dislikes to protect creators and channels from targeted attacks to downvote their videos.

YouTube said in a tweet late on Wednesday that in response to creator feedback around well-being and targeted dislike campaigns, it is testing a few new designs that don’t show the public dislike count.

“Creators, you’ll still be able to see the exact number of likes and dislikes in YouTube Studio. For viewers, if you’re in the experiment, you can still like or dislike a video to share feedback with creators and help tune the recommendations you see on YouTube,” the company announced.

Currently, data for both likes and dislikes are available in a creator’s individual YouTube Studio page, but only likes will be displayed publicly on a video.

YouTube said it is not testing hiding dislikes on all creators’ videos but with a select few to begin with and gather insights.

“Viewer feedback has always been, and will continue to be, an important part of YouTube. But we’ve heard from creators that the public dislike counts can impact their wellbeing, and may motivate a targeted campaign of dislikes on a creator’s video,” the company said.

“So, we’re testing designs that don’t include the visible like or dislike count in an effort to balance improving the creator experience, while still making sure viewer feedback is accounted for and shared with the creator,” it added.

Instagram had also experimented with hiding like counts on posts in various countries around the world.

Seoul: Taking Elon Musk-run Tesla head on, South Korea’s No 2 automaker Kia on Tuesday unveiled the EV6, its first all-electric model built on a dedicated platform that can travel over 500 kms on a single charge.

The EV6 is priced at from over 45 million won to around 55 million won ($40,000 and $48,500) — similar to Tesla’s entry-level all-electric sedans.

In an online world premier event, South Korea’s No. 2 automaker showcased its crossover EV6 based on its parent Hyundai Motor Group’s electric global modular platform (E-GMP), which is the same platform used for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 unveiled last month.

The EV6 is the first of 11 fully electric vehicles (EV) Kia plans to roll out by 2026 as part of its EV drive. The automaker’s other EV models are the Niro and Soul, which are offered alongside gas and hybrid variants.

“The EV6 is the first model that comes after Kia declared its vision to transform itself from an automaker to an innovative mobility solution provider,” Kia President Song Ho-sung said during an online press briefing.

“The EV6 is a symbolic model developed under Kia’s mid- and long-term plan to increase the ratio of eco-friendly models to 40 percent of total sales by 2030.”

The model will offer two choices of battery packs — a standard 58-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack and a long-range 77.4-kWh one, reports Yonhap news agency.

The long-range model with an 800-volt system can travel over 510 km on a single charge, which is further than the Ioniq 5’s 430-km driving range, and charge up to 80 percent of battery capacity in 18 minutes, the company said.

The EV6 offers a more spacious interior than other EVs that spawned from gasoline-powered models, and the sleek design embodies its shifting focus toward electrification, it said.

Its battery can be used as an energy storage system thanks to “vehicle-to-load” technology, which enables the electricity from the battery to be used by external devices.

The crossover also comes with advanced safety features such as lane keeping assist, blind spot collision avoidance, safety exit assist and rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist systems.

The company said it aims to sell 30,000 units globally this year and targets 100,000 units next year when a high-end trim is released.

Spotify Launches Redesigned Desktop App, Web Player

New Delhi: Spotify has announced it is rolling out a new look for its streaming service on the desktop, with the launch of a redesigned app for both Mac and Windows, as well as an updated web app.

The redesign brings a lot of cosmetic changes, some features are finding a new place within the app, but the biggest noticeable change will be the similarity to the mobile app.

“Since the desktop experience served as the original window to the world for Spotify, this was not a task we took lightly. It took months of tests and research, talking to users, and gathering feedback. Now, we’re pleased to deliver a new, clean design, more controls, and a great new foundation for our listeners to use Spotify across our desktop app and web player for the years to come,” the company said in a statement.

The biggest feature in the new update is the ability for Spotify Premium users to download songs on the desktop app.

The search tool is now located on the left side of the navigation page. It was earlier kept on top of the home screen. A search bar has been added to playlists as well.

The new redesign is already rolling out to all users globally, but it might take weeks to hit everyone.

NASA Rules Out Asteroid Apophis Hitting Earth In 2068

New York: In a big relief, NASA has ruled out the possibility of asteroid Apophis impacting Earth in 2068, saying that our planet is safe from this notorious space rock for at least a century.

The results from a new radar observation campaign combined with precise orbit analysis have helped astronomers conclude that there is no risk of Apophis impacting our planet for the next 100 years at least, NASA said.

Discovered in 2004, asteroid Apophis, estimated to be about 340 metres across, quickly gained notoriety as an asteroid that could pose a serious threat to Earth when astronomers predicted that it would come uncomfortably close in 2029.

Thanks to additional observations of the near-Earth object (NEO), the risk of an impact in 2029 was later ruled out, as was the potential impact risk posed by another close approach in 2036.

Until this month, however, a small chance of impact in 2068 still remained.

When Apophis made a distant flyby of Earth around March 5, astronomers took the opportunity to use powerful radar observations to refine the estimate of its orbit around the Sun with extreme precision, enabling them to confidently rule out any impact risk in 2068 and long after.

“A 2068 impact is not in the realm of possibility anymore, and our calculations don’t show any impact risk for at least the next 100 years,” Davide Farnocchia of NASA’s Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), which is managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said in a statement.

“With the support of recent optical observations and additional radar observations, the uncertainty in Apophis’ orbit has collapsed from hundreds of kilometres to just a handful of kilometres when projected to 2029. This greatly improved knowledge of its position in 2029 provides more certainty of its future motion, so we can now remove Apophis from the risk list.”

To arrive at the latest Apophis calculations, astronomers turned to the 70-metre radio antenna at the Deep Space Network’s Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex near Barstow, California, to precisely track Apophis’ motion.

“Although Apophis made a recent close approach with Earth, it was still nearly 17 million kilometres away. Even so, we were able to acquire incredibly precise information about its distance to an accuracy of about 150 metres,” said JPL scientist Marina Brozovic, who led the radar campaign.

“This campaign not only helped us rule out any impact risk, it set us up for a wonderful science opportunity.”

San Francisco: A former Amazon worker has sued the e-commerce giant in the US for not scheduling the mandatory 30-minute meal breaks for employees.

Lovenia Scott, a former employee of Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Vacaville, California, alleged that the company didn’t provide enough rest breaks for workers, The Verge reported on Saturday.

“When they did get their meal breaks, workers were expected to monitor their walkie-talkies in case of any problems on the floor, which sometimes cut into their break time,” the lawsuit claimed.

First filed in San Francisco County Superior Court in February, the case has now been moved to US District Court California, Northern District.

The lawsuit also alleged that shifts were “chronically understaffed,” which left some employees unable to take short 10-minute rest breaks in order to finish their work on time.

Amazon was yet to comment on the report.

Earlier this month, Amazon and an independent contractor it worked with in California were fined $6.4 million for wage theft by the Labor Commission’s Office.

The probe found that “Green Messengers, the subcontractor for Amazon, underpaid drivers, scheduling them 10-hour days but with a workload that forced drivers to skip meal and rest breaks”.

Last week, amid a mounting evidence of allegedly ill-treating its low-paid workers, Amazon denied exploitative working conditions at its facilities, including forcing exhausted workers to ‘pee in bottles’.

Replying to a tweet from US Representative Mark Pocan (D-WI), the e-commerce behemoth said that the company’s union-busting tactics allegations are baseless.

“Paying workers $15/hr doesn’t make you a ‘progressive workplace’ when you union-bust & make workers urinate in water bottles,” Pocan said in a tweet.

Amazon replied: “You don’t really believe the peeing in bottles thing, do you? If that were true, nobody would work for us. The truth is that we have over a million incredible employees around the world who are proud of what they do, and have great wages and health care from day one”.

“We hope you can enact policies that get other employers to offer what we already do,” the company further stated.

Once the Twitter war started, several journalists and people who have documented such incidents at Amazon facilities began flooding the Web.

Journalist James Bloodworth, whose 2018 book titled ‘Hired: Six Months Undercover in Low-Wage Britain,’ documented his experience of low-paid work for companies including Amazon.

Chennai: India will get into the global communication satellite launch market with its Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket after 2022-23, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), K. Sivan said.

“Enquiries from third parties are being received for satellite launch using GSLV rockets. The rocket can be used for launch of multiple satellites. However, at present our GSLV rockets are fully booked and we can look at commercial launches only after 2022-23,” Sivan told IANS.

India has three rockets to launch satellites viz Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), GSLV-Mk II and GSLV-Mk III.

The country has used PSLV for putting into orbit earth observation satellites – owned and those belonging to domestic and foreign third parties.

The GSLV Mk II and GSLV-Mk III rockets are used for orbiting communication satellites that are heavier than earth observation satellites.

India has slung a total of 342 foreign satellites into orbit, all for a fee. However, the majority of the foreign satellites orbited by PSLV are small ones.

The real cash is in launching heavier communication satellites.

The GSLV-Mk II has a carrying capacity of 2,500 kg to Geo Transfer Orbit (GTO) and the GSLV-Mk III capacity is 4,000 kg to GTO.

“About 10-12 satellites are to be launched using GSLV-Mk II rocket including navigation and defence satellites. The rocket is fully engaged till 2022-23,” Sivan said.

As regards with the much heavier GSLV-Mk III rocket, the ISRO’s focus is on building a human rated vehicle so that India’s human space mission Gaganyaan can be realised, he remarked.

The Indian space agency is expected to fly its human rated first unmanned GSLV-Mk III by the end 2021, Sivan said.

It is also developing a smaller rocket with a carrying capacity of 500 kg.

The realisation of SSLV is expected to be delayed as the first static test of the rocket’s first stage was unsuccessful.

Sivan declined to dwell on the static test.

On the status of getting the private sector to make PSLV rockets, the ISRO Chair said the request for proposal (RFP) has been issued and time has been given till May for interested parties to submit their proposals.

Sivan said inter-ministerial consultations on the proposed Space Act and the Space Based Remote Sensing Policy are to be held. The Space Based Communication Policy of India 2020 or Spacecom Policy-2020 is in the final form.

“Policies on launch vehicles, space exploration, human space flight are on the way.”

Sivan replied in negative when queried about the students of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) making and launching a satellite.

Students of several Indian universities have made and launched their satellites using PSLV rockets.

“We give new technology projects for IIST students,” Sivan said.

Chennai: The launch of India’s first Geo Imaging Satellite (GISAT-1) to be placed in geostationary orbit will happen sometime during the first or second week of April, said K. Sivan, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Speaking to IANS Sivan said: “The GISAT-1 launch slated for March 28 got slightly delayed as some technical issues were observed in the satellite and the rocket. The issues observed issues have to be addressed even if they are minute ones.”

The GISAT-1 will be the country’s first sky eye or earth observation satellite to be placed in geostationary orbit.

Originally the GISAT-1 was slated for launch on March 5, 2020 by Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-F10 (GSLV-F10).

Hours before the start of the launch countdown, Indian space agency announced postponement of the mission owing to some technical glitch.

“The launch of GISAT-1 onboard GSLV-F10 (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-F10), planned for March 05, 2020, is postponed due to technical reasons. Revised launch date will be informed in due course,” Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had said on March 4.

“Subsequently the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown delayed the mission. The rocket had to be dismantled and cleaned up,” Sivan added.

The Indian space agency had earlier said GISAT-1 would provide real time image of large area of region of interest at frequent intervals. It will also enable quick monitoring of natural disasters, episodic events and any short term events.

The 2,268 kg GISAT-1 will also provide spectral signatures for agriculture, forestry, mineralogy, disaster warning, cloud properties, snow, glaciers and oceanography.

The satellite will have payload imaging sensors of six band multi-spectral visible and near infra-red with 42 metres resolution; 158 bands hyper-spectral visible and near infra-red with 318 metres resolution and 256 bands hyper-spectral short wave infra-red with 191 metres resolution.

A four metre diameter Ogive shaped payload fairing (heat shield) has been used in the rocket for the first time, ISRO had said.

New York: A new view of a supermassive black hole marks the first time astronomers have captured and mapped polarisation, a sign of magnetic fields, so close to the edge of a black hole.

Images released by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration revealed how the black hole, some 55 million light-years away at the centre of galaxy M87 appears in polarised light.

The EHT collaboration involves more than 300 researchers from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America.

Scientists still do not understand how magnetic fields — areas where magnetism affects how matter moves — influence black hole activity.

Do they help direct matter into the hungry mouths of black holes? Can they explain the mysterious jets of energy that extend out of the galaxy’s core?

In two studies published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, EHT astronomers revealed their latest findings and how magnetic fields may be influencing the black hole at the centre of M87.

“One of the main science drivers of the EHT is distinguishing different magnetic field configurations around the black hole,” said Angelo Ricarte, a co-author and researcher at the Center for Astrophysics; Harvard and Smithsonian.

“Polarisation is one of the most direct probes into the magnetic field that nature provides.”

The EHT collaboration has been studying the supermassive object at the heart of M87 for well over a decade.

In April 2019, the team’s hard work paid off when they revealed the very first image of a black hole.

Since then, the scientists have delved deeper into the data, discovering that a significant fraction of the light around the M87 black hole is polarised.

Light becomes polarised when it goes through certain filters, like the lenses of polarised sunglasses, or when it is emitted in hot regions of space that are magnetised.

In the same way polarised sunglasses help us see better by reducing reflections and glare from bright surfaces, astronomers can sharpen their view of the black hole by looking at how light originating from there is polarised.

Specifically, polarisation allows astronomers to map the magnetic field lines present around the inner edge of the black hole.

“In order to gain confidence in our analysis, we used as many as five distinct methods to calibrate the data and reconstruct polarimetric images,” said Maciek Wielgus, a researcher at Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative and the Center for Astrophysics (CfA) who participated in the study.

“This huge team effort paid off as we found very good consistency between results obtained with all the different techniques.”

To observe the heart of the M87 galaxy, the EHT collaboration linked eight telescopes around the world, including the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory’s Submillimeter Array, to create a virtual Earth-sized telescope.

Washington: NASA will attempt to fly Ingenuity mini-helicopter, currently attached to the belly of the Perseverance rover, on Mars on April 8, in the first such attempt on another planet.

However, before the 1.8- kg rotorcraft attempts its first controlled flight, both it and its team back home must meet a series of daunting milestones.

“When NASA’s Sojourner rover landed on Mars in 1997, it proved that roving the Red Planet was possible and completely redefined our approach to how we explore Mars. Similarly, we want to learn about the potential Ingenuity has for the future of scientific research,” said Lori Glaze, director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters.

“Ingenuity is a technology demonstration that aims to be the first powered flight on another world and, if successful, could further expand our horizons and broaden the scope of what is possible with Mars exploration,” Glaze said in a statement on Wednesday.

On March 21, the rover deployed the guitar case-shaped graphite composite debris shield that protected Ingenuity during landing.

The rover currently is in transit to the “airfield” where Ingenuity will attempt to fly.

Once deployed, Ingenuity will have 30 Martian days, or sols, (31 Earth days) to conduct its test flight campaign.

Flying in a controlled manner on Mars is far more difficult than flying on Earth.

The Red Planet has significant gravity (about one-third that of Earth’s) but its atmosphere is just 1 percent as dense as Earth’s at the surface.

During Martian daytime, the planet’s surface receives only about half the amount of solar energy that reaches Earth during its daytime, and night-time temperatures can drop as low as minus 90 degrees Celsius, which can freeze and crack unprotected electrical components.

To survive the frigid Martian nights, it must have enough energy to power internal heaters.

“Every step we have taken since this journey began six years ago has been uncharted territory in the history of aircraft,” said Bob Balaram, Mars Helicopter chief engineer at JPL.

“While getting deployed to the surface will be a big challenge, surviving that first night on Mars alone, without the rover protecting it and keeping it powered, will be an even bigger one,” Balaram added.

The helicopter deployment process will take about six sols (six days, four hours on Earth).

While Ingenuity will attempt the first powered, controlled flight on another planet, the first powered, controlled flight on Earth took place on December 17, 1903, on the windswept dunes of Kill Devil Hill, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Orville and Wilbur Wright covered 120 feet in 12 seconds during the first flight. The Wright brothers made four flights that day, each longer than the previous.

Telegram Raises $150mn From Abu Dhabi Investors

Abu Dhabi: Encrypted messaging app Telegram on Tuesday said it has raised $150 million from two key Abu Dhabi-based investors and will open a office here.

Mubadala Investment Company has invested $75 million in five-year pre-IPO convertible bonds of Telegram, with Abu Dhabi Catalyst Partners investing a further $75 million.

The strategic partnership between the companies is expected to create new collaboration opportunities and further advance Abu Dhabi’s ecosystem of innovative and tech-enabled companies.

Launched in 2013 by brothers Pavel and Nikolai Durov as a secure messaging app utilising end-to-end encryption, Telegram evolved into a fully-fledged social media platform and has its global headquarters in the UAE.

It has become one of the 10 most downloaded apps in the world with over 500 million monthly active users.

“We recognise and admire Pavel’s vision for the company and the team’s execution in building an exceptional product and company. His unwavering focus on user experience and privacy, and how it is central to every business decision he makes, is one of the keys to Telegram’s popularity and success,” said Faris Sohail Faris Al Mazrui, Head of Mubadala’s Russia and CIS Investment Programme.

Driven by a renewed surge in India amid WhatsApp privacy row, Telegram became the most downloaded non-gaming app worldwide for January with more than 63 million installs, 3.8 times its downloads in the same month a year ago, according to data by app analytics firm Sensor Tower.

“We are honoured by the US$150 million investment into Telegram from Mubadala and Abu Dubai Catalyst Partners. We look forward to developing this strategic partnership to continue our growth in the MENA region and globally,” said Durov, Founder and CEO of Telegram.

In recent years, Mubadala has been expanding its focus on the technology sector through a strategy of direct and fund-of-fund investing from early-stage venture capital to growth.

Over the past 12 months, it has made a number of global technology investments in category leaders including the autonomous driving technology company Waymo, AliExpress and Reliance Jio Platforms, to name just a few.

Static Test Of First Stage Solid Motor Of India's Mini Rocket SSLV Unsuccessful

Bengaluru: The static test of first stage solid motor (SS1) of ISRO’s Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) — a new-generation compact rocket — was not successful, according to sources in ISRO.

“Oscillation was noticed after 60 seconds into the test and nozzle was blown out near the bucket flange where it’s attached with the motor at around 95 seconds”, sources in the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency said.

It was supposed to be tested for a total duration of about 110 seconds, officials said.

The Indian Space Research Organisation had targeted to launch the first development flight of SSLV (D1) in April and may now in all probability have to revise this schedule.

“SSLV First stage is a new solid motor…new design.

New motor has to be static tested on the ground to prove its performance.

If it is successful, one more of the same configuration is tested again for acceptance.

If both are successful, no more ground test is required and third motor of the same configuration will be accepted for flight”, an ISRO official said.

SS2 and SS3 motors, igniters and SS2 flex nozzle assembly, liquid propulsion-based VTM (Velocity Trimming Module) thrusters, propellant tanks and propulsion components had already been realised by ISRO and made ready for the maiden orbital test flight.

“We have to identify the root cause of the failure and modify the design”, the official said on the unsuccessful testing at Sriharikota spaceport in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, about 100 kms north of Chennai, last week.

Asked how long it may take for ISRO to complete the two static tests, the official said: “Maybe six months”.

SSLV is two metres in diameter and 34 meters in length with a lift-off weight of about 120 tons.

ISRO has over the years realised five generations of launch vehicles — SLV-3, ASLV, PSLV, GSLV and GSLV-MkIII.

The space agency had earlier said the SSLV is going to be a new member of the launch vehicle family.

It is intended to cater to emerging global small satellite launch service market.

“We are flying an earth observation satellite (EOS-02) on board the the first development flight of SSLV”, ISRO Chairman and Secretary in the Department of Space, K Sivan said last month.

SSLV has been designed to meet “launch on demand” requirements in a cost-effective manner for small satellites in a dedicated and ride share mode.

It is a three-stage all solid vehicle with a capability to launch up to 500 kg satellite mass into 500 km low earth orbit (LEO) and 300 kg to Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).

By comparison, PSLV — the workhorse of ISRO — can take up to 1,750 kg payload into SSO of 600 km altitude.

With lower per kg launch cost, the mini launcher will have multiple satellite mounting options for nano, micro and small satellites.

Sivan had earlier termed the SSLV an innovative vehicle, which can be assembled in just 72 hours.

“Instead of 60 days (for building a PSLV), it (SSLV) will be assembled in three days; instead of 600 people (needed to build a PSLV), it (SSLV) will be done by six people”, he had said.

Chairman and Managing Director of ISRO’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), G Narayanan, recently said: “the world over there is a big boom for small launch vehicles and that’s why we are focusing on that”.

The US-based satellite ride share and mission management provider, Spaceflight Inc., has already purchased the first commercial launch of the SSLV (SSLV-D2) from NSIL for launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Spaceflight had said at the time that it has already sold out the entire manifest (launch) for this secured SSLV-D2 launch, with spacecraft from an undisclosed U.S.-based satellite constellation customer.

This undisclosed customer is reportedly Seattle-based BlackSky Global, which will launch four earth observation satellites on board SSLV-D2 in the ride share mission arranged Spaceflight.

“Were taking advantage of the growth in the small satellite market to deliver more launch options with the mini-launcher”, a senior NSIL official said.

“The SSLV is the much-needed solution to fill the gap in the portfolio of small launch vehicles,” Curt Blake, CEO and President of Spaceflight, had said.

“SSLV is designed for the launch-on-demand concept with very quick turn-around capability in between launches.

SSLV is perfectly suited for launching multiple micro satellites at a time and supports multiple orbital drop-offs”, Blake had said.

Microsoft Servers Being Hacked 'Faster Than Anyone Can Count'

New Delhi: The key vulnerabilities in the Microsoft business email servers have left cyber security experts flummoxed as this free-for-all attack opportunity is now being exploited by vast numbers of criminal gangs, state-backed threat actors and opportunistic “script kiddies,” researchers at F-Secure have warned.

To make matters worse, proof-of-concept automated attack scripts are being made publicly available, making it possible for even unskilled attackers to quickly gain remote control of a vulnerable Microsoft Exchange Server.

“Tens of thousands of servers have been hacked around the world. They’re being hacked faster than we can count,” said Antti Laatikainen, senior security consultant at the cyber security firm F-Secure.

According to F-Secure analytics, only about half of the Exchange servers visible on the Internet have applied the Microsoft patches for these vulnerabilities.

“Never in the past 20 years that I’ve been in the industry, has it been as justified to assume that there has been at least a digital knock at the door for every business in the world with Exchange installed. Because access is so easy, you can assume that majority of these environments have been breached,” Laatikainen stressed.

Taiwanese electronics and computer maker Acer has already been hit by a ransomware attack where the hackers are demanding $50 million, the largest known ransom to date.

According to Bleeping Computer, hackers have accessed Acer documents that include financial spreadsheets, bank balances and bank communications, compromising its network via a Microsoft Exchange server vulnerability.

Earlier reports have claimed that five different hacking groups (including China-backed hacking group called ‘Hafnium’) are exploiting vulnerabilities in the business email servers of Microsoft.

Microsoft has released an emergency patch for its Exchange Server product, the most popular mail server worldwide.

According to the F-Secure report, Countries currently seeing the most detections (in descending order) are Italy, Germany, France, the UK, the US, Belgium, Kuwait, Sweden, the Netherlands and Taiwan.

Laatikainen expects that companies will start reporting breaches soon.

The GDPR data protection regulation demands that theft of personal data must be reported to the data protection authorities within 72 hours.

“You have to expect that the number of GDPR breach reports coming in the next few weeks will be historic. Your company doesn’t have to be on the long list of organisations reporting breaches tomorrow if you take the right steps today,” he noted.

“Companies that have security monitoring capabilities in place, along with networking monitoring and effective path policy can fight back. There are a ton of things they can do manually to prevent a full disaster. I just encourage them to do them immediately,” the security expert suggested.
