New Delhi: Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-Delhi) on Sunday said it has developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model for drug repositioning in the treatment of Covid-19.

This means that instead of manually going through ever available drug and checking its effectiveness against Covid-19 (which is a painstakingly long process), one can now rely on AI to speed things up and find us the drugs which have the highest probability of success against the disease.

Some well known examples of repositioned drugs are Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), Dexamethasone, Remdesivir, Avifavir/Favipiravir etc.

Sime lesser-known drugs that are on trial include Ribavirin, Umifenovir, Sofosbuvir and several antiretrovirals.

The database of drugs (drugbank.ca) lists more than 100 approved antivirals. Trying out all of them in clinical trials is not possible; it will be expensive both financially and in terms of time – a luxury we cannot afford.

“Therefore, we propose to use AI to prune this massive database and select a handful (5 to 10) of drugs that have better chances of succeeding. This would allow more concerted effort/trials on this handful of prospective treatment regimes,” IIIT Delhi said in a statement.

In simple terms, the AI model computes the similarity between the chemical structures of the drugs and the similarity between the genomic structures of existing viruses and the novel Coronavirus.

The model then looks at the historical information about the efficacy of the drugs on different viruses; it selects similar drugs (based on chemical structure) that have been successful in treating viruses that have a genomic structure close to that of the novel Coronavirus.

The AI model that could prove to be an indispensable tool in the battle against Covid-19 has been the result of collaboration between IIIT Delhi, IPGME&R Kolkata and INRIA, Saclay, Paris, France.

Seoul: Google’s video-sharing platform YouTube will cooperate with South Korea to closely monitor and prevent the spread of fake news and illegal content.

Google’s Senior Vice President Neal Mohan made the comments during a videoconference with Han Sang-hyuk, chairman of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC).

The remarks came after Han requested such cooperation, considering fake news surrounding Covid-19 and a recent high-profile digital sexual abuse case in South Korea, in which such illegal materials were distributed across social media platforms.

The regulator has kept a close watch over the tech giant this year.

Last month, Google voluntarily corrected subscription practices on its YouTube Premium service in the country, after the KCC found they were unfair for users.

The regulator also imposed a fine of $720,000 on Google for violating local telecom laws, as it did not properly notify users of YouTube Premium’s charged service.

In March this year, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company has taken down thousands of videos on YouTube related to dangerous or misleading coronavirus information using its Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technology.

In a blog post, Pichai said that since January, Google has blocked hundreds of thousands of ads attempting to capitalize on the coronavirus pandemic.

New Delhi: WhatsApp has so far been a great experience for billions of users globally where there are no ads in-between chats, no distractions like promoted posts and in-app pop-ups, but integration with the rest of Facebook family of apps may mar the beauty of this end-to-end-encrypted mobile messaging platform.

The world of social media is soon going to change as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg inches closer to fulfill its dream of integrating all his services into one cross-platform movement of personal data among Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 for over $19 billion.

Both WhatsApp co-founders — Brian Acton and Jan Koum — have quit a couple of years back over an alleged difference of opinion with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg over data privacy, encryption and issues line monetizing the platform, which they always wanted to remain free from distractions and work like a pure, independent chat experience.

In an interview with Forbes, Acton explained that a disagreement on monetizing WhatsApp was the reason he quit Facebook and gave up $850 million on the table.

Acton alleged that Zuckerberg was in a rush to make money from the messaging service and undermine elements of its encryption technology.

“Targeted advertising is what makes me unhappy,” Acton said.

Both Acton and Koum never wanted WhatsApp to become a platform full of ads, tweak its encryption standards, or merge it with other apps.

Now, few such hints are seen in an early-stage experiment in integrating Facebook Messenger with WhatsApp via a cross-chat feature.

WABetaInfo, a fan website that closely tracks WhatsApp Beta developer versions, has found a database in Facebook Messenger that will allow Messenger to understand whether WhatsApp contacts are blocked.

“It will contain details on the state of a chat and whether push notifications are active or not”.

Facebook is apparently collecting the code for a local database. It can find out if a WhatsApp contact is blocked, find a phone number, find whether or not a chat is archived.

Similarly, Instagram is also working on integrating Messenger.

Zuckerberg has revealed his plans to integrate its chat services to let billions of users message one another across platforms. Calling it a long-term project, Zuckerberg had said the cross-app functionality will happen in 2020 or beyond.

More than the commercial benefits of the chat integration between the apps, he said he was concerned about data encryption.

“The first reason that I’m excited about this is moving more to end-to-end encryption by default in more of our products. People really like this in WhatsApp. I think it’s the direction that we should be going in with more things in the future,” Zuckerberg told analysts during a conference call.

The move will let the social networking giant tout higher user engagement to advertisers, further ramping up its advertising division that has taken a hit in recent days as more and more brands leave the platform over its inaction to check harmful posts, especially from the political leaders.

The cross-platform experience is still some time away but whether it will spare WhatsApp is doubtful as the monetization drive is a double-edged sword, strongly capable of killing simple, pure user experiences in an ear of digital advertising.

San Francisco: Microsoft has introduced a new platform security technology to prevent data corruption techniques being adopted by cybercriminals to target system security policy and tamper with data structures on Windows 10 devices.

Called Kernel Data Protection (KDP), the technology prevents data corruption attacks by protecting parts of the Windows kernel and drivers through virtualization-based security (VBS).

According to the company, KDP is a set of APIs (application programming interfaces) that provide the ability to mark some kernel memory as read-only, preventing attackers from ever modifying protected memory.

“For example, we’ve seen attackers use signed but vulnerable drivers to attack policy data structures and install a malicious, unsigned driver. KDP mitigates such attacks by ensuring that policy data structures cannot be tampered with,” the tech giant said in a statement this week.

The concept of protecting kernel memory as read-only has valuable applications for the Windows kernel, inbox components, security products, and even third-party drivers like anti-cheat and digital rights management (DRM) software.

KDP uses technologies that are supported by default on Secured-core PCs, which implement a specific set of device requirements that apply the security best practices of isolation and minimal trust to the technologies that underpin the Windows operating system.

“It enhances the security provided by the features that make up Secured-core PCs by adding another layer of protection for sensitive system configuration data,” said Microsoft.

New Delhi: With the ban on TikTok creating a huge vacuum for the 15-second videos in the Indian Internet space, Facebook-owned Instagram on Wednesday announced the extension of the testing of Reels which allows users to record, edit and share short multi-clip videos, to India.

With Reels, Instagram users can share short videos with their followers on Feed and, if they have a public account, make their reels available to the wider Instagram community through a new space in Explore.

“With the rise in video consumption overall and videos making up over a third of posts on Instagram in India, Instagram has a big role to play in unleashing expression in the country,” Ajit Mohan, Vice President and Managing Director, Facebook India, told reporters in a video call.

“With Reels, we’re unveiling the future of entertainment on the platform, in a way that ignites creativity. With the multiple creative formats, whichever way you want to express yourself, it can now be on Instagram,” Mohan added.

Instagram is used by over a billion people globally across many surfaces — Feed, Stories, IGTV and Live.

With Reels, people can express themselves while entertaining others, whether that’s by trying out a fun new dance or spreading the message on something they care about.

People can record and edit 15-second multi-clip videos with audio, effects and new creative tools on Reels.

“Instagram has always been a place where culture is created because people come to share the things they care about and be entertained.

“We’re constantly listening to our community, and have heard that they want to make and watch short-form videos on Instagram and have the opportunity to be discovered by our broader community,” said Vishal Shah, Vice President of Product, Facebook.

“We’re excited to expand the test of Reels to India and give the next generation of creators born and bred in India a chance to share their native and cultural context — and be potential global stars.”

The feature will start rolling out to users in India from 7.30 pm from Wednesday and at the onset, will be populated with content from a diverse set of public figures and creators, such as Ammy Virk, Gippy Grewal, Komal Pandey, Arjun Kanungo, Jahnavi Dasetty aka Mahathalli, Indrani Biswas aka Wondermunna, Kusha Kapila, Radhika Bangia, RJ Abhinav and Ankush Bhaguna.

India is the fourth country, after Brazil, Germany and France, where this new format is being tested.

This entertainment experience builds on the work done in the past year to enable expression, such as the vast library of music available on the platform; the Spark AR effects on Instagram that enable more creation and expression on the platform; and the ‘Born on Instagram’ programme, which has led to discovery and growth of creators from all across India.

San Francisco: Google on Monday launched a free training programme for small-to-medium sized news publishers that would be available first in Europe and will roll out to more regions in the coming months.

Called the Digital Growth Programme under the Google News Initiative (GNI), it has been created to help establish and grow the online business of news publishers who have more recently started developing their digital platforms.

The GNI Digital Growth Programme is available in six countries: Spain, the UK, Germany, Italy, Poland and France.

“It’s all in local languages, and many more countries to follow in the coming months,” the tech giant said in a statement.

As traditional media outlets urge social media giants to give their dues for using their news content especially during the difficult Covid-19 times, Google last month announcing a new licensing programme to pay publishers for high-quality content.

To be launched later this year, the programme will help participating publishers monetize their content through an enhanced storytelling experience that lets people go deeper into more complex stories, stay informed and be exposed to a world of different issues and interests.

According to the company, demand for local news has grown as people try to stay up to date in the Covid-19 times.

“COVID-19 has also increased the financial challenges many of these news publishers face. It’s now more important than ever to support local news, and that’s why we are introducing the Digital Growth Programme,” said Google.

In Europe, Google has partnered with FT Strategies and Table Stakes Europe from WAN-IFRA to deliver in-depth labs, which include intensive training sessions and mentoring delivered over a number of weeks and months.

Google recently funded more than 5,300 local news organizations and five months of fee relief on Ad Manager for news publishers globally.

New Delhi: Facing social media onslaught over it being a Chinese company, US-based video meet platform Zoom on Monday said that they are clear about its identity and plan to significantly invest and hire local talent in the country over the next five years.

Velchamy Sankarlingam who is President of Engineering and Products at Zoom said India is and will continue to be an important market for Zoom.

“We do recognize that as we continue to introduce ourselves to the Indian market, there has been some confusion about the facts as it relates to Zoom. We want to work through these,” said Sankarlingam who joined Zoom in May from enterprise software major VMware.

He said that some of the misconceptions are disheartening, especially those about Zoom and China.

“Zoom has been clear about its identity: Zoom is a US company, publicly traded on the NASDAQ, founded and headquartered in San Jose, California. And like many global technology companies, Zoom has offices in China operated by subsidiaries of the US parent company,” emphasized Sankarlingam who spent more than nine years at VMware.

The popular video conferencing platform Zoom was left stunned last month after the Indian intelligence agencies red-flagged it along with Chinese apps over safety and privacy issues of users.

Later, when the Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps over national security concerns, Zoom was also targeted on various social media platforms for being Chinese.

According to Sankarlingam, they look forward to engaging with more stakeholders in India in the coming months to support key priorities such as Digital India, StartUp India, and Skills India, as well as introducing them to Zoom.

“We will expand our footprint and hiring more top talent in the region,” he added.

Zoom’s presence in India is represented on the ground by an office in Mumbai, as well as two data centres (one in Mumbai and the other in Hyderabad).

Three of Zoom’s top executives are of Indian descent: Aparna Bawa, Chief Operating Officer; Sunil Madan, Corporate Chief Information Officer; and Sankarlingam.

“These characteristics are why many global technology companies, including my former employer VMWare, choose to invest in India as a key regional operational hub, and we are looking to expand our service to as many of India’s 1.3 billion people as we can reach,” said Sankarlingam.

San Francisco: Gmail users around the world were complaining about spam messages flooding their inbox over the weekend as the Google service was apparently suffering from a widespread problem with its email filters.

Several Gmail users took to Twitter and other social media platforms like Reddit to convey they were being bombarded with spam messages.

Google acknowledged the problem to Forbes, saying the spam flaw was actually part of a bigger issue which caused Gmail emails to be delayed, both when sent and received.

The consequence of this was “some messages were delayed enough that they resulted in delivery without all spam checks completing”.

Google said that “during this time, scans to filter malware and the most egregious spam and harmful content remained fully operational”.

The issue was first reported by Android Police.

“Why did the Gmail spam filters break?!” posted one user.

“Did Gmail’s spam filter and category function just completely shut down for anyone else? Everything’s now going straight to the primary inbox,” commented another.

Google said the issue has now been resolved.

Another user posted: “It is a strangely comforting thing that I can just search for gmail’ and immediately Twitter provides me with evidence that yes, others are getting weirdly hit with spam right now”.

New Delhi: WhatsApp on Saturday launched its first brand campaign in India that chronicles real-life stories about how Indians communicate with their closed ones on a daily basis on the popular messaging application.

The campaign monikered ‘It’s Between You’ highlights WhatsApp’s commitment to privacy, the company said in a statement.

“With WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, we come closest to replicating real-life interactions and that’s when we can truly be ourselves. The conversations you have, the jokes you tell and the memories you relive belong to you and deserve to stay between you,” said Avinash Pant, Director, Marketing at Facebook India.

WhatsApp collaborated with Gauri Shinde, a celebrated Indian Bollywood director along with BBDO India to create two 60-second adverts, each highlighting how WhatsApp’s features like texts, video calls or even voice messages, help replicate in-person conversations and bring people closer.

One ad is based on a true story about an elderly woman and her caregiver, who are now separated from each other.

“From how to bring together the cast and crew that were right for the part and happened to be living together, and directing over a WhatsApp video call, to doing all the post-production work without being physically present – it’s been really rewarding,” said Shinde.

The second story is at the other end of the spectrum of emotion, which is a light and fun film about a younger sister giving joyful courage to her elder one through a WhatsApp video call, when the latter feels vulnerable and hesitant to give her a haircut at home.

“WhatsApp is designed to help friends and family communicate as well as help users connect with a business that is important to them,” said the company.

Chennai: Indian space agency on Friday released an image of Phobos, the closest and biggest moon of Mars clicked on July 1 by the Mars Colour Camera onboard the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the image was clicked by MOM when it was about 7,200 km from Mars and 4,200 km from Phobos.

Further ISRO added, “Mars Colour Camera (MCC) onboard Mars Orbiter Mission has imaged Phobos, the closest and biggest moon of Mars, on 1st July when MOM was about 7200 km from Mars and at 4200 km from Phobos. Spatial resolution of the image is 210 m. This is a composite image generated from 6 MCC frames and has been colour corrected.”

Phobos is largely believed to be made up of carbonaceous chondrites. The violent phase that Phobos has encountered is seen in the large section gouged out from a past collision (Stickney crater) and bouncing ejecta. Stickney, the largest crater on Phobos along with the other craters (Shklovsky, Roche & Grildrig) are also seen in this image.

San Francisco: Twitter has joined efforts to do away with racially loaded terms such as master, slave and blacklist from its coding language in the wake of the death of African-American George Floyd and ensuing Black Lives Matter protests.

The project started even before the current movement for racial justice escalated following the death of 46-year-old George Floyd in police custody in May.

The use of terms such as “master” and “slave” in programming language originated decades ago. While “master” is used to refer to the primary version of a code, “slave” refers to the replicas. Similarly, the term “Blacklist” is used to refer to items which are meant to be automatically denied.

The efforts to change these terms in favour of more inclusive language at Twitter were initiated by Regynald Augustin and Kevin Oliver and the microblogging platform is now backing their efforts.

“Inclusive language plays a critical role in fostering an environment where everyone belongs. At Twitter, the language we have been using in our code does not reflect our values as a company or represent the people we serve. We want to change that. #WordsMatter,” Twitter’s engineering team said in a post on Thursday.

As per the recommendations from the team, the term “whitelist” could be replaced by “allowlist” and “blacklist” by “denylist”.

Similarly, “master/slave” could be replaced by “leader/follower”, “primary/replica” or “primary/standby”.

Twitter, however, is not the first to start a project to bring inclusivity in programming language.

According to a report in CNET, the team behind the Drupal online publishing software started using “primary/replica” in place of “master/slave” as early as in 2014.

The use of the terms “master/slave” was also dropped by developers of the Python programming language in 2018.

Now similar efforts are underway at Microsoft’s Github and LinkedIn divisions as well, said the report.

Using Chinese apps has always been a cause for worry due to security reasons. Similarly, with China dumping its low-quality goods in India and using the cash to strengthen its position both financially as well as at the borders, the ban on Chinese goods is the need of the hour. A few days ago, the Indian government took the first step by banning 59 Chinese apps some of which were hugely popular in India such as TikTok, ShareIt, and more.

Now it is time Indians start looking for an alternative to these popular Chinese apps. Not only that, but we must also choose non-Chinese Smartphones to ensure that the major chunk that our enemy-nation is earning through the sale of mobiles in India should be severely chopped down. So what are the best alternatives to Chinese Smartphones like Mi Redmi, Vivo, Lenovo-Motorola, Oppo, or OnePlus?

Best Alternatives To Chinese Mobile Phones

Undeniably Chinese Smartphones are currently ruling the Indian mobile phone market. But even then it is up to the Indians to ensure that now they are sidelined and non-Chinese mobiles are given first preference. Some of the most popular non-Chinese brands include Samsung, Apple, Nokia, Asus, and LG. Samsung is a South Korean company with a vast portfolio offering a wide range of Smartphones from Rs.2000 to Rs.1.5 lakhs.

Cash-conscious people needing an Android phone can select from the array of affordable and stylish Galaxy M-series of Samsung. Apple is a premium smartphone brand with a wide range but a bit costlier than the rest. The basic mobile phone from Apple starts from Rs.30,000 and if you are looking for the latest then be prepared to pay Rs.40,000 and above. The latest entries from Apple in the market are iPhone SE and iPhone 11 hovering around Rs.42, 500, and Rs.55, 000 respectively. Asus, Nokia, and LG are the other three companies that also offer Smartphones in a wide variety. Thus, Indians have a lot of options to choose from even if they decide to ditch the Chinese Smartphone brands.

Desi Alternatives For Chinese Apps

TikTok, UC Browser, SHAREit are some of the most popular Chinese apps which millions of Indians have been using for the last couple of years now. Many have also made TikTok a source of their earning. But now that the Indian government has banned these and more such Chinese apps it is time to use their desi versions which have always been there.
ShareChat Is Best Alternative For TikTok

The ideal option for TikTok is ShareChat, a social video platform. Similar to the Chinese app, this Indian-based platform also allows coming up with videos that look professional and share them instantly. You can interact in 10 different languages on this platform and can take up challenges, lip-sync, and also create your music videos on ShareChat.

Alternative For UC Browser-JioBrowser or Epic Web Browser

Epic Web Browser and JioBrowser are the two alternatives for the UC Browser. Developed by a company Hidden Reflex from Bangalore Epic Web Browser has several features like in-built virus protection and more. JioBrowser is known for offering secure and fast surfing experience and provides entertainment and news content to the users.

ShareALL As Alternative For SHAREit

Similar to SHAREit, ShareALL also quickly transfers files of all the types without cables or internet access. It is free and performs high-speed sharing of files with ease.

Alternative For Zoom

Technically Zoom is located in California but most of its calls in the last few years are being routed through the Chinese server. As a good desi option for Zoom, you can opt for Say Namaste or Jio Meet from Reliance Jio. Other popular international options include Cisco Webex and Google Meet. But if you are looking for an exclusively Indian video conferencing app then Say Namaste should be preferred.

New Delhi: The Government of India recently banned 59 Chinese apps on concerns over the safety and security of user data and privacy of Indians.

However, the biggest doubt on everyone’s mind is, why the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG or the Call of Duty Mobile battle royale game did not find any mention in the list of banned apps?

PUBG is not banned in India as it is not entirely Chinese. The game has been created and managed by Bluehole which is a South Korean organisation.

After PUBG became popular, Tencent — a Chinese conglomerate — joined hands with Bluehole to market the product in China and started handling a large portion of its distribution. The game is distributed in India by Tencent Holdings.

The game did not feature in the banned list due to its mixed-ownership since it’s not entirely Chinese.

The Call of Duty Mobile, even though owned by Tencent Games, has still not been banned in India and users can continue to play the game on Android and iOS.

Call of Duty Mobile is the mobile version of the famous video game series ‘Call of Duty’. The game received massive response during beta testing, as well as when it was released.

COD Mobile, which is one of the most loved mobile gaming apps, is developed by an American tech company called Activision Blizzard in partnership with Tencent Game, the company behind PUBG Mobile and Timi.

Tencent Holdings also has 5 per cent ownership in Activision Blizzard.

While one cannot dismiss the game’s Chinese links, its mixed-ownership could have played a role in the government’s decision to not omit COD from its list of banned apps.

San Francisco: Google on Monday said it is piloting a new feature in partnership with local news publishers to understand how COVID-19 is impacting different communities.

The company said it would test the News feature in a few geographic areas in the US and Canada in the COVID-19 special section of the app, where users can view community reopening timelines, plus updates around business and school openings.

They can also see the status of the local healthcare infrastructure, public transportation, events and sections with resources for residents looking for or wanting to help families in need.

“We will also continue to expand our coverage across the U.S. and Canada, and plan to bring this feature to products beyond the Google News app in the future,” the company said in a statement.

Google said it is also working to ensure that reliable local news and information about the coronavirus is easily discoverable in Google Search and Google Assistant.

“When people look for coronavirus information in Search, they’ll see the existing top stories carousel of articles, in addition to a new dedicated local news carousel highlighting timely, accurate news about their community,” the company announced.

It has also expanded a new carousel highlighting tweets from local and health authorities so these important and up-to-date announcements are more easily available. This feature is now available in more than 30 countries.

Google has also seen a significant uptick in people tuning into local radio on Google Assistant.

The company recently provided emergency funding for more than 5,300 local news organizations and launched a Support Local News campaign to encourage people and businesses to subscribe, donate and advertise across local news outlets in the US and Canada.

As traditional media outlets urge social media giants to give their dues for using their news content especially during the difficult Covid-19 times, Google last week announced a new licensing programme to pay publishers for high-quality content.

To be launched later this year, the programme will help participating publishers monetize their content through an enhanced storytelling experience that lets people go deeper into more complex stories, stay informed and be exposed to a world of different issues and interests.

Washington: In a stunning hour-long video, NASA’s sun-pointing semi-autonomous spacecraft, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, has put together a time-lapse of its 10 years of observing the Sun.

Over the past 10 years, the spacecraft has gathered 425 million high-resolution images of the Sun, amassing 20 million gigabytes of data, NASA said.

This 10-year time-lapse showcases photos taken at a wavelength of 17.1 nanometers, which is an extreme ultraviolet wavelength that shows the Sun’s outermost atmospheric layer — the corona.

Compiling one photo every hour, the movie condenses a decade of the Sun into 61 minutes.

The video shows the rise and fall in the activity that occurs as part of the Sun’s 11-year solar cycle and notable events, like transiting planets and eruptions.

The video has been watched by hundreds of thousands of people on YouTube, Twitter and other social media platforms.

The data that SDO has gathered over the past 10 years has enabled several new discoveries about the workings of the Sun and how it influences the solar system.

With a triad of instruments, SDO captures an image of the Sun every 0.75 seconds.

The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument alone captures images every 12 seconds at 10 different wavelengths of light.

While SDO has kept an unblinking eye pointed towards the Sun, there have been a few moments it missed, NASA said.

The dark frames in the video are caused by Earth or the Moon eclipsing SDO as they pass between the spacecraft and the Sun.

A longer blackout in 2016 was caused by a temporary issue with the AIA instrument that was successfully resolved after a week.

The images where the Sun is off-centre were observed when SDO was calibrating its instruments.

SDO was launched on February 11, 2010.

New Delhi: Instagram is working on a new feature called video note for its standalone messaging app Threads that helps users stay connected to close or smaller circle of friends.

The new feature, reported by mobile developer and leaker Alessandro Paluzzi, will automatically turn audio in videos to live captions.

“Instagram is working on a new feature for the Threads app: video note. This feature will turn the audio of the video into live captions that will be shown in time with the recording,” Paluzzi tweeted.

This feature is especially helpful for users with hearing disabilities.

The video note feature would also help Threads users understand what their friends are actually meant to say, and respond clearly.

Facebook in October last year launched the Snap-clone app for Instagram users.

Threads lets you share photos, videos, messages, Stories and more with Instagram close friends list.

“You are in control of who can reach you on Threads, and you can customise the experience around the people who matter most,” said Robby Stein, Director of Product, Instagram.

You can use Threads to message close friends on Instagram and you’ll have a dedicated inbox and notifications just for them.

Threads app opens directly to the camera and allows you to add shortcuts, so you can share what you are doing in just two taps.

Washington: The US space agency has thrown open a challenge to win over Rs 26 lakh, calling the global community to send novel design concepts for compact toilets that can operate in both microgravity and lunar gravity.

NASA is preparing for return to the Moon and innumerable activities to equip, shelter, and otherwise support future astronauts are underway.

The astronauts will be eating and drinking, and subsequently urinating and defecating in microgravity and lunar gravity.

NASA said that while astronauts are in the cabin and out of their spacesuits, they will need a toilet that has all the same capabilities as ones here on Earth.

The public designs for space toilet may be adapted for use in the Artemis lunar landers that take humans back to the Moon.

“Although space toilets already exist and are in use (at the International Space Station, for example), they are designed for microgravity only,” the US space agency said in a statement.

NASA’s Human Landing System Programme is looking for a next-generation device that is smaller, more efficient, and capable of working in both microgravity and lunar gravity.

The new NASA challenge includes a Technical category and Junior category and the last date to send designs is August 17.

NASA’s Artemis Moon mission will land the first woman and next man on the lunar surface by 2024.

The Artemis programme is part of America’s broader Moon to Mars exploration approach, in which astronauts will explore the Moon and experience gained there to enable humanity’s next giant leap, sending humans to Mars.

New York: A team of Facebook researchers has created an end-to-end system that helps users turn photos they take on their smartphones into 3D images within seconds.

The new framework provides users with a more practical approach to 3D photography, addressing several design objectives.

Users can access the new technology via their own mobile device and the real-time conversion from a 2D input image to 3D is seamless, requiring no sophisticated photographic skills.

It only takes a few seconds to process and the method is robust enough to work on almost any photo — new or one previously taken.

Over the last century, photography has gone through several tech ‘upgrades’ that increased the level of immersion.

“Initially, all photos were black and white and grainy, then came colour photography, and then digital photography brought us higher quality and better-resolution images,” said Johannes Kopf, lead author of the work and research scientist at Facebook.

“Finally, these days we have 3D photography, which makes photos feel a lot more alive and real”.

The 2D-to-3D photo technique has been available as a “photos feature” on Facebook since late 2018.

To take advantage of this feature, originally Facebook users were required to capture photos with a phone equipped with a dual-lens camera.

Now, the Facebook team has added an algorithm that automates depth estimation from the 2D input image, and the technique can be utilized directly on any mobile device.

To refine the new system, the researchers trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) on millions of pairs of public 3D images and their accompanying depth maps and leveraged mobile-optimization techniques developed by Facebook AI.

The framework also incorporates texture inpainting and geometry capture of the 2D input image to convert it into 3D, resulting in images that are more active and lively.

Each automated step that converts a user’s 2D photo, directly from their mobile device, is optimized to run on a variety of makes and models and is able to work with a device’s limited memory and data-transfer capabilities.

“Users get instant gratification, as the 3D results are literally generated in a matter of seconds,” said the team.

Researchers at Facebook have been working toward new and inventive ways to create high quality, immersive 3D experiences, pushing the envelope in computer vision, graphics, and machine learning.

In future work, the team is investigating machine-learning methods that enable high-quality depth estimation for videos taken with mobile devices.

The Facebook researchers are set to demonstrate their system at SIGGRAPH 2020 conference in August.

New Delhi: A day after the Union Cabinet gave its approval to allow private sector participation in space sector, ISRO chief  K. Sivan in a press briefing on Thursday said that the newly-created Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) will usher in a plethora of private agencies transform Indian space sector.

”These reforms will put India in the league of very few countries with an efficient, promotional and authorization mechanism in private sector space activities,” Sivan said.

“With Prime Minister’s vision and guidance we will make all effort so that India transits into new space era wherein innovative startups and industries are enabled to play a significant role in the space sector,” the ISRO chief noted.

The head of the country’s premier space research organisation further said, “Department of Space will promote sector space activities to enable it to provide end to end space services, including building and launching of rockets and satellites as well as providing space-based services on a commercial basis.”

“Space sector, where India is among handful of countries with advanced space technology, can play significant role in boosting industrial base of India. The government has decided to implement reformed measures to leverage ISRO’s achievement by opening space sector for private enterprises,” said Sivan.

He further added, “As part of longer socio-economic reform, space reforms will improve access to space-based services for India’s development. Far-reaching reforms will put India in the league of few countries with efficient promotional and authorisation mechanism for private sector space activities.”

Adding to his statement he said, “We believe that in space industry private can play bigger role than just supplying parts and components. Department of Space will promote private sector space activities to enable and provide end to end space services including building and launching of rockets and satellites as well as providing space based services on commercial basis.”

Here to note that the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved participation of the private sector in the entire range of space activities, including planetary exploration missions.

The ‘New Space India Limited (NSIL), a PSU under the Department of Space, will endeavour to re-orient space activities from a ‘supply driven’ model to a ‘demand driven’ model, thereby ensuring optimum utilisation of our space assets, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said.

Some of the planetary exploration missions will also be opened up to private sector through an ‘announcement of opportunity’ mechanism, a government statement said.

While ISRO is the patentee or patent owner, the four inventors are Srirangam Siripothu, Reshmi Balachandran, Saraswathi Kesava Pillai Manu, and Gurumurthy Chandrasekaran.

According to the patent papers filed by ISRO, the garment made of biocompatible fabrics and parts to provide comfortable body temperature and removal of sweat.

These garments find use in manned space flights and also for earth-bound operations such as firefighting, working in industries and the like, the Indian space agency said in its filings.

The close-fitting, single-piece garment covering the body, torso and limbs from neck to toe weighs between 1,000 to 3,000 g and has a front-entry zipper to be worn inside over which the flight or the spacesuit is to be worn.

According to ISRO, the garment has superior heat transfer efficiency and can be conveniently used for maintaining the body temperature of the wearer at levels suitable for the physiological performance required.

The LCHG controls the body temperature of the wearer comprising outer polymeric fabric tricot and inner polymeric fabric net in contact with the wearer’s skin.

The outer and inner layer of the garment are separated by a plurality of tubes configured to circulate a heat transfer fluid.

The tube is arranged in such a way that it covers the entire body without any overlaps and remove maximum heat from the wearer.

The Indian space agency is working on an ambitious Rs 10,000-crore project ‘Gaganyaan’ to send three air force pilots into space for a week.

Four Indian Air Force pilots are undergoing astronaut training in Russia. Out of these, three will travel into space at a height of about 400 km.

New Delhi: The government has warned of a major upcoming phishing attack which promises free Covid-19 testing across India. A large-scale cyberattack has been planned by cyber crooks where they may use Covid-19 as bait to steal personal and financial information.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued an advisory warning that the potential phishing attacks could impersonate government agencies, departments and trade bodies. It stated, “Phishing campaign is expected to impersonate government agencies, departments and trade associations who have been tasked to oversee the disbursement of the government fiscal aid.”

It further said, “Spoofed email ID which could be used for the phishing email is expected to be ncov2019@gov.in.”

The CERT-In warning advisory added that there would be a phishing email subject line like free Covid-19 testing for all residents of Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad.

“The malicious group claims to have 2 million individual email addresses and the attack campaign is expected to start on June 21,” the Indian government stated.

“Such emails are designed to drive recipients towards fake websites where they are deceived into downloading malicious files or entering personal and financial information,” CERT-In said in the latest advisory dated June 19.

“It has been reported that these malicious actors are planning to spoof or create fake email Ids impersonating various authorities,” it cautioned.

CERT-In, in its advisory, outlined a list of steps for users to protect themselves, including not opening attachments in unsolicited emails even if it comes from people who are in the contact list.

It has asked users to encrypt and protect their sensitive document to avoid potential leakage. It also urged people to use anti-virus tools, firewalls and filtering services and asked them to report any unusual activity or attack immediately to CERT-In.

The government also issued preventive measures where it stated that not to open or click on the attachment in an unsolicited email, SMS or messages through social media. It further directed to exercise caution in opening attachments, even if the sender appears to be known.

“Beware of email addresses, spelling errors in emails, websites and unfamiliar email senders,” stated the advisory, warning every citizen not to submit personal financial details on unfamiliar or unknown websites or links.

“Beware of emails, links providing special offers like Covid-19 testing, aid, winning prize, rewards, cashback offers,” the government advisory stated.

San Francisco: A team of Google researchers has created a new technology to take the immersive augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences to a new level.

New research shows the ability to record, reconstruct, compress, and deliver high-quality immersive light field videos, lightweight enough to be streamed over regular Wi-Fi.

“We’re making this technology practical, bringing us closer to delivering a truly immersive experience to more consumer devices,” said Michael Broxton, Google research scientist.

Photos and videos play a huge role in our day-to-day experience on mobile devices, and “we are hoping that someday immersive light field images and videos will play an equally important role in future AR and VR platforms,” he added.

Wide field of view scenes can be recorded and played back with the ability to move around within the video after it has been captured, revealing new perspectives.

In recent years, the immersive AR/VR field has captured mainstream attention for its promise to give people a truly authentic experience in a simulated environment.

Although the field is still nascent, the team at Google has addressed important challenges, making major research headway in immersive light field video.

Another breakthrough in this work involves data compression.

The idea is not only to develop a system capable of reconstructing video for a truly immersive AR/VR experience but also to access the experience via consumer AR and VR headsets and displays, and even in a web browser.

The new system compresses light field video while still preserving its original visual quality and it does so using conventional texture atlasing and widely supported video codecs.

In essence, the Google researchers have succeeded at bootstrapping a next-generation media format off of today’s image and video compression techniques.

“Users will be able to stream this light field video content over a typical, fast-speed internet connection,” Broxton said.

“Overcoming this problem opens up this technology to a much wider audience”.

The research team, led by Broxton and Paul Debevec, Google senior staff engineer, plans to demonstrate the new system at virtual ‘SIGGRAPH 2020; conference.

“Completing this project feels like we’ve overcome a major obstacle in making virtual experiences realistic, immersive, distributable, and comfortable,” added Debevec.

New York: Researchers have detected a strange repeating rhythm of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) emanating from an unknown source outside our galaxy, 500 million light-years away.

Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, are short, intense flashes of radio waves that are thought to be the product of small, distant, extremely dense objects, though exactly what those objects might be is a longstanding mystery in astrophysics.

FRBs typically last a few milliseconds, during which time they can outshine entire galaxies. Since the first FRB was observed in 2007, astronomers have catalogued over 100 fast radio bursts from distant sources scattered across the universe, outside our own galaxy.

Now astronomers have started to find bursts repeating in a pattern, where they seem to switch off and on in a predictable pattern. The latest discovery, published in the journal Nature, sends out random bursts of radio waves over a four-day window, and then goes quiet for 12 days, before beginning again.

Researchers watched the bursts for more than 500 days, noting that the 16-day pattern occurred consistently over that time, making it the most definitive pattern yet seen.

“This FRB we’re reporting now is like clockwork,” said study researcher Kiyoshi Masui from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US.

“It’s the most definitive pattern we’ve seen from one of these sources. And it’s a big clue that we can use to start hunting down the physics of what’s causing these bright flashes, which nobody really understands,” Masui added.

The latest FRBs were picked up by CHIME, that was the first to pick up signals of the new periodic FRB source. In 2017, CHIME was erected at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in British Columbia, where it quickly began detecting fast radio bursts from galaxies across the universe, billions of light-years from Earth.

CHIME consists of four large antennas, each about the size and shape of a snowboarding half-pipe, and is designed with no moving parts. Rather than swivelling to focus on different parts of the sky, CHIME stares fixedly at the entire sky, using digital signal processing to pinpoint the region of space where incoming radio waves are originating.

From September 2018 to February 2020, CHIME picked out 38 fast radio bursts from a single source, FRB 180916. J0158+65, which the astronomers traced to a star-churning region on the outskirts of a massive spiral galaxy, 500 million light-years from Earth.

The source is the most active FRB source that CHIME has yet detected, and until recently it was the closest FRB source to Earth. As the researchers plotted each of the 38 bursts over time, a pattern began to emerge: One or two bursts would occur over four days, followed by a 12-day period without any bursts, after which the pattern would repeat.

This 16-day cycle occurred again and again over the 500 days that they observed the source.

“These periodic bursts are something that we’ve never seen before, and it’s a new phenomenon in astrophysics,” Masui said.

The researchers noted that the blasts could also be the result of a binary system such as a neutron star orbiting around another neutron star or black hole. The pattern could be the result of the orbit between, and the interaction between the two objects, which would explain their regular pattern, they concluded.

San Francisco: Google has announced to bring its video chat service Meet to Gmail on Android and iOS smartphones so that people can easily join video meetings from their inbox on the go.

In the coming weeks, Google users will soon notice a new Meet tab on the phone’s Gmail app where they can see upcoming meetings scheduled in Google Calendar, and easily join them with a single tap.

In the Meet tab, tap on “New meeting” to start a meeting instantly, get a meeting link to share, or to schedule a meeting in Calendar.

“If you tap on ‘Join with a code,’ you can join meetings shared with you by entering a meeting code,” Google said in a statement late Tuesday.

“If you don’t want Meet to appear as a tab in the Gmail app, access the Settings from the hamburger menu in the top left corner of your inbox, tap on your account, scroll down and uncheck Meet,” the company informed.

With video calling now being an integral part of our lives, Google made Meet free and available for everyone last month and also brought it into Gmail on the web.

The tech giant has seen daily usage of Meet grow by 30 times, with Meet hosting over 3 billion minutes of video meetings daily.

The video conferencing app has begun receiving AI noise cancellation feature update to help attendees reduce the background noise significantly.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Earth Sciences on Tuesday said that an annular solar eclipse will occur on June 21 and the celestial event will be visible in Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttarakhand.

A solar eclipse occurs on a new moon day when it comes in between the earth and the sun and all the three objects are aligned.

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the angular diameter of the moon falls short of that of the sun and it fails to cover up the latter completely. As a result, a ring of the sun’s disk remains visible around the moon.

The sky gazers will get an opportunity to observe the “ring of fire” during the phenomenon.

The eclipse will be seen as a partial solar eclipse from the rest of the country. Few prominent places within this narrow annularity path are Dehradun, Kurukshetra, Chamoli, Joshimath, Sirsa, Suratgarh, etc.

In India, the obscuration of the sun by the moon at the time of the greatest phase of the annular eclipse will be nearly 98.6 per cent.

Obscuration of the sun by the moon at the time of the greatest phase of the partial eclipse will be around 94 per cent in Delhi, 80 per cent in Guwahati, 78 per cent in Patna, 75 per cent in Silchar, 66 per cent in Kolkata, 62 per cent in Mumbai, 37 per cent in Bangalore, 34 per cent in Chennai, 28 per cent in Port Blair.

Eclipsed Sun should not be viewed with the naked eye, even for a very short time. It will cause permanent damage to the eyes leading to blindness even when the moon covers most portion of the Sun.

Safe technique to observe the solar eclipse is either by using a proper filter like aluminized Mylar, black polymer, welding glass of shade number 14 or by making a projection of the sun’s image on a whiteboard by telescope.

New Delhi: Do you want the same WhatsApp account in all the devices that you own? This could soon be possible in a limited sense as the messaging platform appears to be trying a feature that would allow its over two billion users to access the same account simultaneously in as many as four devices.

According to a recent tweet by WABetaInfo, a fan website that tracks WhatsApp beta, the feature is currently under development.

“Yes, it’s the ability to use your WhatsApp account from 4 devices at the same time.

Under development, but it’s great!,” said the tweet.

A screenshot shared along with the tweet suggests that Wi-Fi connectivity will sync data across multiple devices.

Currently one can simultaneously access one WhatsApp account both from a PC — through WhatsApp Web – and a smartphone.

The update, however, left many questions, like whether it will work across platforms, unanswered.

“Would this make switching between iOS and Android easier? right now it is extremely difficult to get conversations move between platforms,” asked one user.

“Is it platform compatible? Meaning can i connect same number from an iphone and android?,” asked another user.

The same WABetaInfo website also shared that WhatsApp is testing a feature that will allow users to search messages by date.

“WhatsApp is testing a Search by date feature! The feature is under development and it will be available in future,” it tweeted.

San Francisco: Alarmed at the growing forged or deepfake videos on its platform, Facebook organised a Deepfake Detection Challenge and the results were not very encouraging, as the highest-performing model achieved an average precision of 65.18 per cent against real world examples.

This, however, establishes a new shared baseline as the artificial intelligence (AI) community continues to work on this difficult and important task, said Facebook.

The Deepfake Detection Challenge drew more than 2,000 participants, who trained and tested more than 35,000 models using a unique new data set created for the challenge.

Tested against a black box data set with challenging real world examples that were not shared with entrants, the top model achieved an average precision of 65.18 per cent.

Facebook partnered with other industry leaders and academic experts last year to create the Deepfake Detection Challenge.

“By creating and sharing a unique new data set of more than 100,000 videos, the DFDC has enabled experts from around the world to come together, benchmark their deepfake detection models, try new approaches, and learn from each others’ work,” the social network said in a statement.

Facebook in January this year has announced tough policies against the spread of manipulated media on its platform.

The company said it will remove misleading manipulated media if it has been edited or synthesized beyond adjustments for clarity or quality.

Deepfakes are video forgeries that make people appear to be saying things they never did, like the popular forged videos of Facebook CEO Zuckerberg and that of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that went viral last year.

Videos that don’t meet standards for removal are still eligible for review by one of Facebook’s independent third-party fact-checkers, which include over 50 partners worldwide fact-checking in over 40 languages.

The compaby said it would also share details on its plans to open-source the raw data set used to construct the Deepfake Detection Challenge, featuring more than 3,500 actors and 38.5 days’ worth of data.

“This will help AI researchers develop new generation and detection methods to advance the state of the art in this field. Moreover, this data set will be opened for use for other research work in AI domains as well as work on deepfakes,” Facebook elaborated.
