New Delhi: In the initial releases of the Android 11 Developer Preview, it looked like Google was planning to add double-tap gesture support for Pixel phones and now, it appears the feature may arrive as part of Android 12.

The double-tap could allow Pixel users to summon Google Assistant, it could also be used for different tasks such as dismissing a timer or snoozing an alarm, reports 9To5Google.

Android 12 double-tap feature would include the ability to adjust the sensitivity to only recognise ‘firm’ taps.

“Alternatively, users can disable the double-tap feature,” the report said on Sunday.

Users can also use the gesture to take a screenshot, pause or resume media playback, open the recent apps view, and open the notification panel.

The double-tap gesture was originally slated to take over from the old Active Edge squeeze gesture on the Pixel 4 phones – noticeably missing from the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 5 – but was found to be too sensitive to work properly. Now it seems that those issues have been overcome.

Considering the first Android 11 Developer Preview arrived in mid-February last year, one can expect the Android 12 preview to follow the same pattern.

To recall, a similar gesture feature was added to the iPhone with the release of iOS 14 called Apple calls Back Tap for screenshot, open Control Center, and more.

New Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS) Cyber criminals and pirates of the Internet now have a new goldmine in Google Drive where they are freely storing and sharing illegal software licenses, movies, games and porn content — most of which have allegedly been indexed in Google Search as some Drive users made such links public in their individual accounts.

Google Drive is a file storage and synchronisation service that allows users to store files on their servers, synchronise files across devices, and share files.

According to independent cyber security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia, thousands of such explicit and illegal content is being circulated via Google Drive, in zipped compressed files.

“Apart from thousands of porn videos, at least 25,000-30,000 links are likely sharing illegal content like malware, software, movies, games and what not. One can search such links in Google Drive at ease. Just do a search and download at will,” Rajaharia told IANS on Sunday and shared several such screenshots.

The irony is that movies/games/software that have been removed from Google Search on the basis of copyright violation are available in Google Drive for faster download.

“Unlike other file sharing websites, Google Drive allows faster downloads so such illegal and explicit content is thriving on its platform,” the cyber security researcher claimed.

An email sent to Google on if such content is being stored and shared freely on Drive did not elicit any response.

Under its terms of service, Google says that “We may review content to determine whether it is illegal or violates our Program Policies, and we may remove or refuse to display content that we reasonably believe violates our policies or the law. But that does not necessarily mean that we review content, so please don’t assume that we do”.

While Google doesn’t go into the details of its detection methods, it uses file-hashes to detect infringing content.

Google Drive matches the hash of copyrighted video content with files that are stored by users to identify pirated content. The company does this on a voluntary basis, according to media reports.

According to Rajaharia, Google Drive is dangerous in a sense because one can search anything easily on its platform that other file-sharing websites.

“There are thousands of pirated movies, softwares, mobile apps uploaded on Google Drive and you can easily search in Google,” he said.

Nearly 80 per cent of the Google Drive movies links are malware. “One wrong click may install malware into your PC or mobile,” Rajaharia added.

According to data provided by him, total Drive links indexed in Google Search are over 10 lakh but not all these links are related to piracy/illegal files.

“There are over 20,000 movies links, more than 2,500 software download links, over 2,500 APK (Android Application Package) mobile apps and more than 1,500 cracked illegal software copies (not all may be pirated),” Rajaharia told IANS.

The Google Drive users must also be aware of their actions.

“They should not make pirated movies and other content public on Google Drive as this will lead to indexing on Search. They must keep their content private or share links with people they know and trust,” the cyber security researcher emphasised.

New Delhi: In a bid to counter cyber-attacks and data theft, primarily perpetrated from China, the government seems determined to implement the new security directives in the telecom sector, cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), within the next six months.

Underlining the need of such directive, a confidential report of National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) says that India is among top three countries in the world facing cyber-attacks. “A sum of Rs 1.24 lakh crore was lost due to cyber-crime in India last year,” the report reveals.

The NSCS report reviewed by IANS says that these cyber-attacks are usually committed through compromised hardware and software components of telecom networks. With increasing use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the risk seems to increase manifold and advent of 5G technologies will further increase the security concerns resulting from telecom networks. There is an urgent need to “maintain integrity of supply chain including electronic components for ensuring security against malware infection,” the report adds.

In recent years, cross border hackers including Chinese agents have reportedly targeted important sectors including banking and finance with an aim to hurt India’s financial operations. The report says that telecom is the critical underlying infrastructure for all sectoral information infrastructure of the country such as power, banking and finance, transport, governance and the strategic sector. Security breaches resulting in compromise of confidentiality or in disruption of infrastructure can have disastrous consequences. Therefore, new directives were required as telecom serves as a crucial sector from the national security perspective.

The NSCS invited key experts in telecom technology and nodal officers of concerned ministries on Thursday and held a brainstorming session for hours to formulate a strategy for implementing the National Security Directive on telecom sector.

In the wake of increasing incidents of espionage, security breaches and cyber-attacks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, heading the CCS, had approved such directives for the telecom sector last month. “A committee will be shortly formed under a Deputy National Security Advisor and we hope that directives will be enforced within the next 180 days,” said an official with an insight on the developments.

The security directive aims to classify telecom products and their suppliers under trusted and non-trusted category. In simpler words, companies or suppliers not trusted by the expert committee would not be allowed to do business with Indian telecom service providers. The directives once implemented would make it very difficult for Chinese telecom equipment suppliers like Huawei or ZTE to procure supply orders from Indian telecom players like Jio, Airtel or Vodafone Idea.

In fact, Huawei and ZTE have been under global scrutiny for allegedly installing “backdoor” vulnerabilities in a desperate bid to indulge in spying for the Chinese government. In the wake of Sino-Indian border tensions, the government’s action plan on the telecom front seems much appreciated and awaited by central security and intelligence agencies.

Sydney: Google on Friday threatened to pull its Search engine from Australia if a proposed media bargaining law, that directs Google to pay news publishers, goes into effect.

Mel Silva, Managing Director of Google Australia and New Zealand, appeared before a public hearing of the Senate Economics Legislation Committee that is reviewing a proposed new law called the News Media Bargaining Code.

She said that in its current form, the Code remains unworkable and if it became law would hurt not just Google, but small publishers, small businesses, and the millions of Australians that use our services every day.

“Coupled with the unmanageable financial and operational risk if this version of the Code were to become law it would give us no real choice but to stop making Google Search available in Australia,” Silva told the panel.

Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which drafted the law, suggested last year that this shouldn’t affect Google’s search business.

“Google will not be required to charge Australians for the use of its free services such as Google Search and YouTube, unless it chooses to do so,” the ACCC had said.

The proposed News Media Bargaining Code law is currently in draft and targets Facebook and Google.

Facebook has also threatened to block its news from being shared in Australia.

Silva told the committee that withdrawing our services from Australia is the last thing that “I or Google want to have happen – especially when there is another way forward”.

“We propose technical amendments in three areas to address the key problems we’ve outlined. These allow Google to pay publishers for value, without breaking Google Search”.

First, rather than payment for links and snippets, the Code could designate News Showcase, and allow Google to reach commercial agreements to pay Australian news publishers for value in addition to the valuable traffic we already provide through Search.

“Secondly, the Code’s final offer arbitration model, with biased criteria presents unmanageable financial and operational risk for Google”, she said.

If this is replaced with standard commercial arbitration based on comparable deals, this would incentivise good faith negotiations and ensure we’re held accountable by robust dispute resolution.

Finally, “the algorithm notification provision could be adjusted to require only reasonable notice about significant actionable changes to Google’s algorithm, to make sure publishers are able to respond to changes that affect them”.

New Delhi: The Google News Showcase has reached nearly 450 publications across a dozen countries, the majority of which are local and regional, the company has announced.

Google said that its investment of $1 billion over the next three years towards news partnerships and for Google News Showcase helps support publications to produce, distribute and explain essential information to users in new ways.

“News Showcase panels give publishers the ability to tell important news stories together with context and links to additional stories. Panels also feature recognisable branding so users can easily find and identify trusted news organisations,” said Brad Bender, VP Product Management, News.

The news partners include Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Liberation in France, El Cronista and La Gaceta in Argentina, TAG24 and Sächsische Zeitung in Germany, and Jornal do Commercio, a regional newspaper from Pernambuco in Brazil.

The company has also announced a new global deal with Reuters for News Showcase.

“These new partners are in addition to the existing News Showcase publications that are live in Brazil and Germany, and have already created tens of thousands of panels which have been seen by millions of users across Google News and Discover on Android and iOS,” Bender said in a statement late on Wednesday.

Google said it is working closely with a number of News Showcase partners to pay to provide users free access to select paywalled stories.
This feature will give users the opportunity to get to know content they might not otherwise have access to.

“In addition, it will enable publishers to develop their own relationships with users and incentivise them to become a subscriber”.

The extended access feature will be live in the News Showcase product in the next couple of months, said Google.

New Delhi: Facebook has announced new improvements in its artificial intelligence (AI) technology to generate descriptions of photos posted on its platforms including Instagram for the visually-impaired users.

Way back in 2016, Facebook introduced a new technology called automatic alternative text (AAT) that utilises object recognition to generate descriptions of photos on demand so that blind or visually impaired individuals can more fully enjoy their News Feed.

“We’ve been improving it ever since and are excited to unveil the next generation of AAT,” the company said in a statement late on Tuesday.

The improved AAT reliably recognises over 1,200 concepts — more than 10 times as many as the original version launched in 2016.

The company has expanded the number of concepts that AAT can reliably detect and identify in a photo by more than 10 times, which means fewer photos without a description.

“Descriptions are also more detailed, with the ability to identify activities, landmarks, types of animals, and so forth,” the social network said.

“These advancements help users who are blind or visually impaired better understand what’s in photos posted by their family and friends — and in their own photos — by providing more (and more detailed) information”.

For the latest iteration of AAT, Facebook leveraged a model trained on weakly supervised data in the form of billions of public Instagram images and their hashtags.

To make the models work better for everyone, the company fine-tuned them so that data was sampled from images across all geographies, and using translations of hashtags in many languages.

“We also evaluated our concepts along gender, skin tone, and age axes. The resulting models are both more accurate and culturally and demographically inclusive,” the company informed.

New Delhi: The Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology has issued summons to officials of Facebook and Twitter for January 21, to question them over misuse of the social media/online news platforms.

The schedule of meeting on the Lok Sabha website read: “Evidence of representatives of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and to hear the views of the representatives of Facebook and Twitter on the subject safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space.”

Earlier, the committee had summoned Facebook’s India head Ajit Mohan over the issue of political bias on the social media platform.

The allegations of a Facebook bias towards the BJP were reported in The Wall Street Journal in August 2020 and had claimed that Ankhi Das, the platform’s then India Policy Head had opposed the idea of removing hate posts by BJP leaders, warning that this could hamper their “commercial interests”.

Das has now quit Facebook.

Telegram Signal

New Delhi: As millions shun WhatsApp and download new chat platforms in search for a secure experience, mind you that security is nothing but an illusion and there is no guarantee that Telegram or Signal may not be hacked in the future, especially when nation-state actors with highly sophisticated tools and huge resources are on the prowl.

Encryption is fundamentally flawed and once hackers get to know any vulnerability or bug in the whole data travel journey — apps, mobile operating system, public Wi-Fi, Cloud and the physical data centres — your personal and sensitive information is always at their mercy.

The Telegram development team is based in Dubai. The Telegram team had to leave Russia due to local IT regulations and has tried a number of locations as its base, including Berlin, London and Singapore. It does not store data within the boundaries of India.

Signal does not own its own data centres. The company is entirely Cloud based, which puts data at risk as cyber-attacks on Cloud-based services have increased in the recent past.

In case the data is compromised, India which does not have a dedicated law on privacy or on cyber security, will not be able to do much, unlike Europe which has a strong General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that treats the safety of its users’ data diligently and seriously.

According to Pavan Duggal, one of the nation’s top cyber law experts and a seasoned Supreme Court lawyer, if you are looking at complete and absolute security, you have to realise that security is a relative term.

“What was secure yesterday is not secure today and what is secure today will not be secure tomorrow. Blindfoldly relying upon these platforms would not suffice. There is a need for people to incorporate cyber security as a way of life,” Duggal told IANS.

Be it Pegasus software attack on WhatsApp or the great Twitter crypto hacking last year that compromised accounts of celebrities like US President-elect Joe Biden, former US President Barack Obama, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (you name it), people are always facing the risk of losing their data.

The latest is the SolarWinds attack that has rocked the US agencies and several tech giants. It is not that the bad actors directly compromised their networks; they used a third-party software called Orion sold by IT management company SolarWinds to infiltrate the systems even of the US Department of Justice (DoJ),

The suspected Russian hackers installed a malware in the Orion software and accessed sensitive data belonging to at least 250 US government agencies and businesses. Around 18,000 private companies and government agencies downloaded the infected Orion software.

At least 24 big companies, including tech giants like Intel, Cisco, VMware Nvidia and even a cyber security firm FireEye, have suffered the ‘SolarWinds’ hack.

Microsoft discovered its systems were infiltrated “beyond just the presence of malicious ‘SolarWinds’ code.” The hackers were able to “view source code in a number of source code repositories”, the tech giant informed.

According to leading tech policy and media consultant Prasanto K. Roy, when WhatsApp discovered the Pegasus attack, it quickly fixed the vulnerability, informed users whom it could trace the hack to, informed the relevant governments and initiated legal proceedings against the spyware’s creators in the US federal court.

“Unlike WhatsApp/Facebook, competitors Signal or Telegram are unlikely to have the resources to do any or all of these in response to a bug. At the most, they’d fix the bug,” Roy told IANS.

Another big worry is that the present-day situation increasingly refers to a massive policy vacuum that exists in India in the context of protection of privacy and data.

“As of today, India does not have a dedicated law on privacy or on cyber security. Further, it still does not have a legal framework in place for protecting all kinds of data. The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 is pending consideration before the Joint Parliamentary Committee. Further, India does not have a dedicated policy on data localisation,” Duggal informed.

“The circumstances and ecosystem are very ripe for state and non-state actors to do activities aimed at prejudicially impacting the security, integrity, sovereignty and also cyber sovereign interests of India”.

Mere switching to new chat platforms alone may not suffice.

“You will have to inculcate new life skill sets which need to be built on the foundation of cyber security and data privacy,” he said, adding that the present law is extremely deficient and is incapable of protecting personal and data privacy.

The current Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 leaves much to be desired and needs to be completely supplemented by an overhauled legislative framework, which can focus on the concerns and protection of rights of stakeholders concerning their data in the digital ecosystem.

Next time when any of the new apps you have shifted to are compromised, which chat or social media app do you have on your mind?

CAIT Files Petition Against WhatsApp, Facebook In SC

New Delhi: The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Saturday filed a petition in the Supreme Court with the prayer to direct WhatsApp to withdraw its new privacy policy which is encroaching upon various fundamental rights of the citizens granted by the Constitution of India.

CAIT has also prayed that the Union of India must frame guidelines to govern big technology companies like WhatsApp and frame policies which would protect the privacy of citizens and businesses.

The petition especially highlights the difference of approach in EU and India countries with respect to the privacy policy of WhatsApp and how the data of Indian users can be misused by such big tech companies. The petition has been drafted by Advocate Abir Roy and settled and filed in Supreme Court by Advocate on Record Vivek Narayan Sharma.

CAIT National President B.C. Bhartia and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal charged that WhatsApp has adopted the approach of ‘my way or high way’ which is arbitrary, unjustified, unconstitutional and cannot be accepted in a democratic country like India. WhatsApp has been fraudulently collecting personal user data.

At the time of its launch, WhatsApp attracted users based on the promise of non-sharing of user data and strong privacy principles. In 2014, after the acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook, when the users had started doubting the privacy of their data and were in fear that their personal data will be shared with Facebook, WhatsApp promised that nothing would change in the privacy policy after the acquisition. However, in August 2016, WhatsApp retracted from its promise and introduced a new Privacy Policy which severely compromised the rights of its users and made the privacy rights of users completely vulnerable, CAIT said.

Under the new privacy policy, it allowed the sharing of personal data with Facebook and all its group companies for commercial advertising and marketing. Since then, the company has been altering its policies to collect and process a wider range of information, and share the same with the third party applications.

The CAIT will not allow any corporate or conglomerate to enforce its ‘obnoxious policies and sinister designs’ to make profit in an unethical manner by firing from the shoulder of the people of India, added its petition.

Global Warming: Nations Need To Step Up Actions Or Face Costs, Says UN Report

Nairobi: As temperatures rise and climate change impacts intensify, nations must urgently step up action to adapt to the new climate reality or face serious costs, damages and losses, a new UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report said on Thursday.

Adaptation – reducing countries’ and communities’ vulnerability to climate change by increasing their ability to absorb impacts – is a key pillar of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

The agreement requires its signatories to implement adaptation measures through national plans, climate information systems, early warning, protective measures and investments in a green future.

The UNEP Adaptation Gap Report 2020 finds that while nations have advanced in planning, huge gaps remain in finance for developing countries and bringing adaptation projects to the stage where they bring real protection against climate impacts such as droughts, floods and sea-level rise.

Public and private finance for adaptation must be stepped up urgently, along with faster implementation. Nature-based solutions — locally appropriate actions that address societal challenges, such as climate change, and provide human well-being and biodiversity benefits by protecting, sustainably managing and restoring natural or modified ecosystems — must also become a priority.

“The hard truth is that climate change is upon us,” UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen said.

“Its impacts will intensify and hit vulnerable countries and communities the hardest — even if we meet the Paris Agreement goals of holding global warming this century to well below 2 degrees and pursuing 1.5 degrees Celsius.”

“As the UN Secretary-General has said, we need a global commitment to put half of all global climate finance towards adaptation in the next year,” she added.

“This will allow a huge step up in adaptation — in everything from early warning systems to resilient water resources to nature-based solutions.”

The most encouraging finding of the report is that 72 per cent of countries have adopted at least one national-level adaptation planning instrument. Most developing countries are preparing National Adaptation Plans.

However, the finance needed to implement these plans is not growing fast enough.

The pace of adaptation financing is indeed rising, but it continues to be outpaced by rapidly increasing adaptation costs. Annual adaptation costs in developing countries are estimated at $70 billion. This figure is expected to reach $140-300 billion in 2030 and $280-500 billion in 2050.

There are some encouraging developments. The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has allocated 40 per cent of its total portfolio to adaptation and is increasingly crowding-in private sector investment.

Another important development is increasing momentum to ensure a sustainable financial system. However, increased public and private adaptation finance is needed. New tools such as sustainability investment criteria, climate-related disclosure principles and mainstreaming of climate risks into investment decisions can stimulate investments in climate resilience.

Implementation of adaptation actions is also growing.

Since 2006, close to 400 adaptation projects financed by multilateral funds serving the Paris Agreement have taken place in developing countries. While earlier projects rarely exceeded $10 million, 21 new projects since 2017 reached a value of over $25 million. However, of over 1,700 adaptation initiatives surveyed, only three per cent had already reported real reductions to climate risks posed to the communities where the projects were being implemented.

Nature-based solutions for adaptation can make a huge contribution, says the report.

It places a special focus on nature-based solutions as low-cost options that reduce climate risks, restore and protect biodiversity and bring benefits for communities and economies.

An analysis of four major climate and development funds — the Global Environment Facility, the Green Climate Fund, the Adaptation Fund and the International Climate Initiative — suggested that support for green initiatives with some element of nature-based solutions has risen over the last two decades.

Cumulative investment for climate change mitigation and adaptation projects under the four funds stood at $94 billion. However, only $12 billion was spent on nature-based solutions — a tiny fraction of total adaptation and conservation finance.

According to the report, cutting greenhouse gas emissions will reduce the impacts and costs associated with climate change. Achieving the two-degree Celsius target of the Paris Agreement could limit losses in annual growth to up to 1.6 per cent, compared to 2.2 per cent for the three-degree Celsius trajectory.

All nations must pursue the efforts outlined in UNEP’s Emissions Gap Report 2020, which called for a green pandemic recovery and updated Nationally Determined Contributions that include new net-zero commitments.

However, the world must also plan for, finance and implement climate change adaptation to support those nations least responsible for climate change but most at risk.

While the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to hit the ability of countries to adapt to climate change, investing in adaptation is a sound economic decision.

Google Removes Hundreds Of Fake Personal Loan Apps In India

New Delhi: Alarmed at the growing harmful financial services products on its Play Store in India, Google on Thursday said it has reviewed hundreds of personal loan apps in India and pulled down several of them found to be violating its app policies.

The company said it has asked the developers of the remaining identified apps to demonstrate that they comply with applicable local laws and regulations in India.

“We have reviewed hundreds of personal loan apps in India, based on flags submitted by users and government agencies,” said Suzanne Frey, Vice President, Product, Android Security and Privacy.

“Apps that fail to do so will be removed without further notice. In addition, we will continue to assist the law enforcement agencies in their investigation of this issue,” Frey said in a statement.

There has been a surge in personal loan apps in India in the recent months, putting data of millions of users at risk.

Google said that to help further ensure that users are making sound choices, “we only allow personal loan apps with full repayment required in greater than or equal to 60 days from the date the loan is issued”.

The tech giant stressed that transparency of information around the features, fees, risks, and benefits of personal loans will help people make informed decisions about their financial needs, thereby reducing the risk of being exposed to deceptive financial products and services.

“To protect user privacy, developers must only request permissions that are necessary to implement current features or services. They should not use permissions that give access to user or device data for undisclosed, unimplemented, or disallowed features or purposes”.

Developers must also only use data for purposes that the user has consented to, and if they later want to use the data for other purposes, they must obtain user permission for the additional uses, Google said.

New Delhi: Hash Code 2021, Googles flagship team programming competition, is back in a virtual avatar owing to the ongoing pandemic.

‘Hash Code 2021′ will kick off with the Online Qualifications on February 25 and wrap up with the ‘Virtual World Finals’ in April.

Hash Code is for students and professionals around the world where people pick the team and programming language and Google picks an engineering problem for them to solve.

This year’s contest kicks off with an Online Qualifications, where your team can compete virtually from wherever you’d like, alongside your virtual hub, an online meet up where teams from the same university, coding club, office or organisation can compete alongside one another.

“Join developers around the world as they grow their coding skills and work to optimise real Google engineering problems,” Google said in a statement on Tuesday.

Registration is now open for ‘Hash Code 2021’.

Hash Code problems are based off of real Google engineering problems.

Past problems have covered challenges like automating smartphone assembly and designing the layout of a Google data centre.

Google said the beauty of Hash Code is that there is no right answer to any of its questions.

“The problems for each round are optimisation problems, meaning you and your team can submit a solution, optimise it and submit it again. Because there is no right answer, your team can submit multiple solutions during a round”.

San Francisco: Google-owned YouTube, which is yet to permanently ban the outgoing US President Donald Trump, has removed a new video from his account for violating the content policies. The company has also issued a “strike” against his account, meaning he cannot upload new videos or livestream content for at least a week.

“After careful review, and in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to the Donald J. Trump channel and issued a strike for violating our policies for inciting violence.” YouTube says in a statement to The Verge.

“As a result, in accordance with our long-standing strikes system, the channel is now prevented from uploading new videos or live streams for a minimum of seven days — which may be extended,” it said on Tuesday.

YouTube has also indefinitely disabled comments on Trump’s videos due to “ongoing concerns about violence”.

Earlier, YouTube removed one of Trump’s videos that addressed a mob attack on the Capitol.

Twitter has banned Trump from its platform, citing “risk of further incitement of violence”. The Twitter ban came after a pro-Trump mob stormed the US Capitol, hoping to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.

Facebook initially prevented Trump from posting to Facebook and Instagram for 24 hours, before CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced to indefinitely suspend his account till January 20.

On Twitter, Trump’s handle is now almost empty white canvas, frozen at 51 followed accounts, 88.7 million followers and two words on the centre of screen, saying “Account suspended”.

WhatsApp Privacy Policy: 'Individual Chats Protected As Users Shun Platform'

New Delhi: Facing intense criticism over its upcoming policy on February 8 as users leave the platform for rivals Telegram and Signal, WhatsApp on Tuesday issued a clarification, saying that individual chats would not be affected by the changes.

“We want to address some rumours and be 100 per cent clear we continue to protect your private messages with end-to-end encryption,” the micro-blogging platform said in a tweet.

In a separate blog, WhatsApp head Will Cathart said that the policy update describes business communication and adds transparency.

“It does not impact how people communicate privately with friends or family,” Cathart said.

WhatsApp said that it uses group membership to deliver messages and to protect the service from spam and abuse.

“We don’t share this data with Facebook for ads purposes. Again, these private chats are end-to-end encrypted so we can’t see their content,” the company stressed.

WhatsApp asserted that neither WhatsApp nor Facebook could see the messages users sent to each other, and they could not hear the conversations over calls either.

“When you give us permission, we access only the phone numbers from your address book to make messaging fast and reliable, and we don’t share your contacts’ lists with the other apps Facebook offers,” the company asserted.

In a newly-released FAQ page, the platform said that the recent update was rather related to the managing of businesses on WhatsApp.

“When you share your location with someone on WhatsApp, your location is protected by end-to-end encryption, which means no one can see your location except the people you share it with”.

The company also added that it will soon allow businesses to use Facebook’s hosting services to manage their communication with users. WhatsApp has said that it will add a label to businesses who use Facebook’s hosting services.

This is the second clarification to be issued by the cross-platform messaging and voice over IP service provider since it revamped its privacy policy.

WhatsApp’s new term of service and privacy policy will go live on February 8.

To continue using the services, users will have to accept the terms and conditions. If the users do not accept the new terms of service, they will no longer be able to use the app from February 8.

New Delhi: Despite India ban and an ongoing legal battle in the US, Chinese short-video making app TikTok has become the highest grossing app globally in 2020 with $540 million in profit, followed by dating app Tinder that grossed $513 million.

According to the data released by app analytics firm Apptopia, YouTube was third with grossing $478 million, followed by Disney+ at $314 million and Tencent Video at $300 million in 2020.

Netflix app was at the 10th spot with grossing $209 million worldwide.

“All data is combined iOS + Google Play, except for data from China which is iOS only. If an app has a ‘lite’ version, that data is included in the respective app’s data,” the company said in a statement.

At 850 million, TikTok was also the most downloaded app in 2020, followed by WhatsApp at 600 million and Facebook at 540 million downloads worldwide.

Instagram, also a Facebook family app, was fourth with 503 million downloads and Zoom came fifth with 477 million downloads in a pandemic-hit year where video calling became paramount for millions.

Facebook Messenger was sixth with 404 million downloads in the top 10 list.

“Sadly, there are no real surprises here. Four of the apps are Facebook owned. Newcomers include Zoom and Google Meet, enabling us to have remote meetings,” the company said.

“TikTok is no surprise here at the top of both lists,” it added.

“The last three apps in the global list received most of their downloads in the second half of 2020 as TikTok was banned in India. MX TakaTak, Josh Videos and Moj are also social short-form video apps popular in India,” the company said.

2021, however, may have a different listing, with millions shunning WhatsApp over its new policy to either give their consent to sharing data with Facebook or lose their accounts after February 8, as rival Telegram and Signal have seen a definite surge in new users.

At about 500 million users and growing, Telegram has become a major problem for the Facebook corporation.

Australian Bushfires: More Frequent, Prolonged, Severe Courtesy Climate Change, Warn Experts

Canberra: Experts have warned that Australia’s devastating 2019-20 “Black Summer” bushfires were a “wake up call” to the extreme effects of climate change in the country.

In a study published on late Thursday, a team from the Australian National University (ANU) and the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes warned that bushfires will become increasingly more severe in the country as a result of global warming, reports Xinhua news agency.

The 2019-20 bushfire season was one of the worst in Australian history.

More than 30 people died in the fires with another estimated 445 deaths linked to smoke inhalation, and more than 18 million hectares of land were burned.

“In the lead up to the summer of 2019/2020 many parts of southeast Australia were three years into a severe drought,” Nerilie Abram, the lead author of the study from ANU, said in a statement.

Abram added that “2019 was our hottest and driest year on record. This climate set-up created exceptionally dry fuel loads that primed the landscape to burn, and dangerous fire weather that allowed fires to quickly escalate”.

“Our new work highlights the strong evidence that southeast Australia’s climate has shifted, and that this type of fire weather is becoming more frequent, prolonged and severe.”

The study found that predictions made more than 10 years ago that the climate-driven fire risk would increase significantly by 2020 had come true.

Abram said that the ‘Black Summer’ was an example of what was to come for Australian summers.

“When we look to the future we see southeast Australia continuing to become even hotter because of human-caused climate change. On top of that climate change is altering our patterns of year-to-year climate variability so that we expect extremely hot and dry years to occur more often,” she said.

“There are also indications that southeast Australia could continue to become drier in winter and experience more frequent weather fronts in summer that cause dangerous fire weather, but more research is needed to fully understand how these fire-relevant impacts of climate change might develop.”

“All of those expected and possible climate change indicators point towards a rapidly increasing risk of catastrophic bushfires that are beyond anything we have experienced in the past.”

Washington: NASA has selected four small-scale astrophysics missions for further concept development in a new programme called “Pioneers” to study the secrets of the universe.

Through small satellites and scientific balloons, these selections enable new platforms for exploring cosmic phenomena such as galaxy evolution, exoplanets, high-energy neutrinos, and neutron star mergers, the US space agency said in a statement on Thursday.

“The principal investigators of these concept studies bring innovative, out-of-the-box thinking to the problem of how to do high-impact astrophysics experiments on a small budget,” said Thomas H Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

“Each of the proposed experiments would do something no other NASA telescope or mission can do, filling important gaps in our understanding of the universe as a whole.”

Aspera is a SmallSat that will study galaxy evolution. Through observations in ultraviolet light, it will examine hot gas in the space between galaxies, called the intergalactic medium, and the inflow and outflow of gas from galaxies.

Pandora is a SmallSat that will study 20 stars and their 39 exoplanets in visible and infrared light.

“Understanding how changes in starlight affects measurements of exoplanets is an outstanding problem in the search for habitable planets beyond the solar system,” NASA said.

StarBurst is a SmallSat that will detect high-energy gamma rays from events such as the mergers of dense stellar remnants called neutron stars.

This would provide valuable insight into such events, which are also detected through gravitational waves by observatories on Earth.

Finally, PUEO is a balloon mission designed to launch from Antarctica that will detect signals from ultra-high energy neutrinos, particles that contain valuable clues about the highest energy astrophysical processes, including the creation of black holes and neutron star mergers.

“Neutrinos travel across the universe undisturbed, carrying information about events billions of light years away. PUEO would be the most sensitive survey of cosmic ultra-high energy neutrinos ever conducted,” the US space agency noted.

After additional definition, these four concept studies will undergo a concept study review before being approved for flight.

“Through this programme designed to attract young professionals, we received two dozen great ideas from a diverse cohort of innovators at universities, research laboratories, and NASA centres,” said Paul Hertz, director of NASA’s astrophysics division at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Wi-Fi 6E To Arrive This Year; Biggest Upgrade In 20 Years

New Delhi: Heralding a new era for the next generation of Wi-Fi in one of its biggest update in 20 years, the Wi-Fi Alliance, the industry-wide group that oversees Wi-Fi, on Thursday said it has started to certify the first wave of products with support for Wi-Fi 6E.

Phones, PCs, and laptops with support should start arriving in the market this year.

“Interoperability certification for Wi-Fi 6E is introduced as global momentum for Wi-Fi operation in the 6 GHz band increases daily. Wi-Fi 6E brings the immense benefits of 6 GHz spectrum to consumers, device manufacturers, and service providers as the band is being made available around the world,” the alliance said in a statement.

Wi-Fi Alliance certification will help ensure users receive a secure, reliable, and interoperable experience with Wi-Fi 6E devices.

Following the decision by the US Federal Communications Commission to open 1200 MHz of 6 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi use, the U., Europe, Chile, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates have also made the decision to deliver 6 GHz for Wi-Fi.

Countries including Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Taiwan, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar and Jordan are quickly progressing towards opening 6 GHz for unlicensed operation.

“Wi-Fi 6E will see rapid adoption in 2021 with more than 338 million devices entering the market, and nearly 20 percent of all Wi-Fi 6 device shipments supporting 6 GHz by 2022,” said Phil Solis, research director at IDC.

“This year, we expect to see new Wi-Fi 6E chipsets from several companies, and a variety of new Wi-Fi 6E smartphones, PCs, and laptops in the first quarter of 2021 followed by TVs and VR product announcements midyear,” Solis added.

Wi-Fi 6E certification utilises cutting-edge WPA3 security that continually evolves to address market needs.

WPA3 has recently been updated to support more even more robust password generation, mitigate additional attacks, and further protect and maintain privacy on Wi-Fi networks.

“Worldwide interoperability for Wi-Fi 6E devices promotes rapid adoption and innovation in 6 GHz,” said Edgar Figueroa, president and CEO, Wi-Fi Alliance.

“Users will soon experience unprecedented Wi-Fi that significantly improves applications and delivers new use cases that will change their connected experiences.”

Samsung is launching its next flagship phones, the Galaxy S21 series, next week with Snapdragon 888 processor that can support Wi-Fi 6E.

“Cisco is proud to work alongside Wi-Fi Alliance to ensure the 6 GHz spectrum is available for unlicensed use, providing a foundation for unlimited innovation. Wi-Fi 6E represents significant advancements in security, reliability and performance, which has never been more important as Wi-Fi traffic continues to grow exponentially,” said Matt MacPherson, Wireless CTO at Cisco.

Alan Hsu, Corporate Vice President & General Manager, Intelligent Connectivity BU, MediaTek said that it will continue to expand its portfolio with Wi-Fi 6E certified solutions as part of the Wi-Fi Alliance’s new Wi-Fi 6E certification programme.

“Currently, MediaTek’s Wi-Fi chipsets are found in hundreds of millions of smartphones, smart TVs, tablets, routers and IoT devices from the industry’s top brands,” Hsu added.

New Delhi: Millions of Indian users received an in-app notification from WhatsApp as part of an upcoming global roll-out for over 2 billion users, asking them to either accept the changes in its Terms of Service and privacy policy by February 8 or their accounts will be deleted.

The in-app notification did not elicit much details but clicking on the links clearly mentioned the key changes in how WhatsApp will collect and process users’ information going forward, and the partnership with Facebook, its parent company, as part of a larger unification drive between the family of apps.

“WhatsApp must receive or collect some information to operate, provide, improve, understand, customise, support, and market our Services, including when you install, access, or use our Services,” the updated policy read.

“Businesses you interact with using our Services may provide us with information about their interactions with you. We require each of these businesses to act in accordance with applicable law when providing any information to us,” it further read.

WhatsApp’s new Terms of Service and privacy policy will come into effect on February 8.

The mobile messaging platform said that it works with third-party service providers and “other Facebook Companies” to help it operate, provide, improve, understand, customise, support, and market its services.

“These companies may provide us with information about you in certain circumstances; for example, app stores may provide us with reports to help us diagnose and fix service issues”.

To recall, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in October said that the company is working hard to merge Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp so that they can start to function a little bit more like one connected interoperable system.

In a bid to allow cross-messaging among its family of apps, Facebook has reportedly started merging Instagram and Messenger chats. The social network has already integrated Messenger rooms with WhatsApp on the Web.

“There’s more work to happen here. We of course, want to bring in WhatsApp to that interoperability as well. There are more features we want to add even to the Messenger, Instagram interoperability,” Zuckerberg had told analysts during the company’s earnings call.

In its updated policy, WhatsApp said that if “you use our Services with such third-party services or Facebook Company Products, we may receive information about you from them”.

“For example, if you use the WhatsApp share button on a news service to share a news article with your WhatsApp contacts, groups, or broadcast lists on our Services, or if you choose to access our Services through a mobile carrier’s or device provider’s promotion of our Services,” the company said.

WhatsApp said as part of the Facebook Companies, it can make suggestions for you (for example, of friends or group connections, or of interesting content), like “personalising features and content, helping you complete purchases and transactions, and showing relevant offers and ads across the Facebook Company Products,” along with “providing integrations which enable you to connect your WhatsApp experiences with other Facebook Company Products”.

“For example, allowing you to connect your Facebook Pay account to pay for things on WhatsApp or enabling you to chat with your friends on other Facebook Company Products, such as Portal, by connecting your WhatsApp account,” the new policy explained.

New Delhi: Twitter has acquired podcasting app Breaker for an undisclosed sum, a move that will cement its position in the world of Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts and others.

Breaker said it plans to shut down its app (on iOS and Android) and website on January 15.

“Here at Breaker, we’re truly passionate about audio communication and we’re inspired by the ways Twitter is facilitating public conversations for people around the world,” CEO Erik Berlin said in a statement late on Monday.

Breaker added a social community element with features such as liking and commenting on episodes.

Stutting down the app will “allow us to focus on building what comes next”.

“You’ll want to find a new podcast listening app, but we believe apps have improved so much since Breaker first launched (and likely because Breaker existed),” Berlin said.

“We recommend trying out Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, Overcast, Pocket Casts, or Castro for your podcast listening”.

New Delhi: How to prevent the next pandemic? As 2021 begins with COVID-19 continuing its global spread, scientists have spotlighted three approaches to at least reduce the risk of pandemic potential diseases- screening animals, reducing land-use change and improving health infrastructure.

There can be no one answer to the question at the centre of an anxious debate across a world coping with COVID-19 and wondering what will happen if another one comes, but the global scientific community has been working on multiple tracks to ensure that humankind is better prepared.

Following several multidisciplinary studies in 2020, scientists now firmly believe a perfect storm for an outbreak with pandemic potential is created by the combined forces of land-use change, high population density and the presence of interfaces between wildlife and domestic animals.

We are only as strong as our weakest ‘link’ given our globally connected society,” Krutika Kuppalli, an expert in emerging infectious diseases affiliated with the Stanford University School of Medicine in the US, told PTI.

Manuel Ruiz, wildlife veterinarian at Montana State University in the US, added that one of the best ways to prevent the next pandemic is to “sample animals across the world to characterise potential pathogens .

Instead of spending money to curb outbreaks once they occurred, we could invest in reforestation and in trying to change the way we interact with wildlife, and alter our level of land-use change”, Ruiz said.

Earlier in the pandemic, it became clear that efforts applying scientific approaches to prevent the next big outbreak could cost countries way less than the expenditures they have meted out to control COVID-19.

A study published in July in the journal Science estimated that COVID-19 may likely cost the global economy between USD 8.1 and 15.8 trillion. It added that preventing major outbreaks could be 500 times cheaper than the expenditures meted out to curb the ongoing pandemic

According to Ruiz, detecting or classifying every single pathogen in the world’s wildlife would be close to impossible, but new methods using machine learning algorithms can be used to generate a catalogue of pathogens from which the animal host and place where the next outbreak may happen could be predicted.

One such international collaborative project that came into the spotlight in 2020 was USAID’s PREDICT, which aimed to strengthen global capacity for the detection of new viruses with pandemic potential.

Working with over 30 countries and screening more than 1,64,000 animals and people, the project has detected nearly 100 novel viruses globally, including the Bombali ebolavirus and the deadly Marburg virus.

The PREDICT project by the US has created this big dataset of viruses circulating in bats and other wildlife. And even now we know only a small proportion of the potential pathogens circulating out there, Ruiz, who studies the transmission of diseases from bats to humans, told PTI.

As several studies in the past have highlighted, bats have unique ‘super immune systems’, enabling them to carry viruses such as the Nipah virus and SARS-CoV-2 without being infected. These pathogens can however jump — or spill over — to humans and cause new diseases in them when they make close contact with the flying mammals.

Disease ecologist Abi T Vanak from the Ashoka Trust For Research In Ecology And The Environment (ATREE) in Bengaluru added that projects such as PREDICT, which scan the horizon for new pathogens, can help identify groups that have pandemic potential in the future.

“From surveillance, we can find out the longevity of the viruses outside the host. Some won’t even last for few minutes. Some can last for days,” Vanak told PTI.

This influences how often a virus can jump from an animal and cause an outbreak in humans.

As these pathogens spill over under very specific conditions, scientists have also unravelled the role played by land-use change in contributing to new outbreaks from animals to humans known as zoonotic diseases.

A major research in this domain, published in the journal Nature in August, analysed mammal and bird species across the world, and found that songbirds, bats, and rodents have the highest potential for spreading new diseases to humans.

“Land-use change is acting as a kind of ecological filter — and these species that do get through the filter are those that carry more pathogens,” Rory Gibb, a co-author of this study from University College London, told PTI.

In several studies published in 2020, parts of India were classified as potential hotspots from where the next pandemic may emerge, partly due to increased rates of land-use change in the country,

Commenting on this observation, Virat Jolli, director of the New Delhi-based organisation Biodiversity and Environmental Sustainability (BEST), said the risk of new pandemic-potential diseases jumping from rodents, bats, and birds, were particularly high in India, especially in the Western Ghats.

The forest areas of Western Ghats, in his view, are under pressure because of plantation, overgrazing and human settlements.

Forest fragmentation for mining, road, and railways projects may lead to the emergence of new diseases, Jolli warned.

The buffer area of 10 kilometres around the protected area should in no way be reduced or altered,” he added.

Since unravelling the when and the where of the next pandemic is a complex question, scientists have also made strides in applying a multidisciplinary approach to predict the emergence of new outbreaks.

In a study, published in April in the journal PLOS, Vanak and his team for the first time applied a co-production model to predict how the tick-borne Kyasanur forest disease (KFD) — a viral haemorrhagic fever endemic to south India — was triggered by factors including land-use change.

The co-production approach brings together different forms of knowledge and expertise from scientists and a wide range of stakeholders to try to understand and address a key problem.

It became much clearer from similar studies in 2020 that collaborative research involving experts from across disciplines is the way forward.

“Diseases don’t exist in individual animals — they’re part of an ecosystem. Sampling an animal for viruses and analysing them is just one part of the puzzle. We need virologists talking to public health experts, social scientists, ecologists and epidemiologists,” Vanak added.

Another major study, which took a multidisciplinary approach to predict global hotspots where the next pandemic could emerge, was published in November in the journal One Health.

It analysed where wildlife-human interfaces intersected with areas of poor health infrastructure and globalised cities, and also pointed to parts of India as potential hotspots.

Michael Walsh, study co-author from the Prasanna School of Public Health, Manipal University, agreed the Western Ghats, as well as northeastern parts of the country, have “broad areas of risk”.

Instead of focusing on specific species, more resources could be invested in improving human health infrastructure in these regions, Walsh told PTI.

While parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu fall under these hotspots, he said these states “are not in the highest tier of risk because they have quite good health infrastructure relative to other states”.

Ruiz believes some parts of India are potential hotspots not because lots of viruses are circulating there but because these have high rates of land-use change and these are also places with high-density of human populations.

“If the novel coronavirus had emerged in a rural village which wasn’t a transport hub like Wuhan, probably the virus may have died off there,” Ruiz added.

Card Holders' Data

New Delhi: Independent cyber security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia claimed on Sunday that data of nearly 10 crore credit and debit card holders in the country is being sold for an undisclosed amount on the Dark Web.

According to Rajaharia, the massive data dump on the Dark Web has been leaked from a compromised server of Bengaluru-based digital payments gateway Juspay.

JusPay told IANS that no card numbers or financial information were compromised during the cyber-attack and the actual number is much lower than the 10 crore-figure being reported.

“On August 18, 2020, an unauthorised attempt on our servers was detected and terminated when in progress. No card numbers, financial credentials or transaction data were compromised,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.

“Some data records containing non-anonymised, plain-text email and phone numbers were compromised, which form a fraction of the 10 crore data records,” the spokesperson added.

However, Rajaharia claimed that the data was being sold on the Dark Web for an undisclosed amount via cryptocurrency Bitcoin.

“For this data, hackers are also contacting via Telegram,” he told IANS.

According to him, PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) have been followed by Juspay in storing users’ card information.

“However, if the hackers can find out the Hash algorithm used to generate the card fingerprint, they will be able to decrypt the masked card number. In this condition, all 10 crore cardholders are at risk,” Rajaharia noted.

The company admitted that the hacker gained access to one of Juspay’s developer keys and was spawning new computation servers in the developer account, trying to gain access to any accessible data.

Juspay, however, said the masked card numbers that have been leaked are not considered sensitive as per compliance.

Only “few” phone numbers and email addresses have been leaked which have dummy values, the spokesperson said, adding that it had intimated its merchant partners about the data leak the very same day.

“No card numbers (like 16-digit card number and other financial credentials) were accessed, as it is stored in a completely different isolated system. No transaction or order information was compromised,” the company spokesperson informed.

“We are making long-term investments for strengthening security and data governance with industry experts,” the company said.

Founded in 2012, Juspay last year raised $21.6 million in its Series B funding round.

The round was led by Sweden’s Vostok Emerging Finance (VEF), which invested $13 million in the technology firm, marking its first investment in the country.

Mars Probe Tianwen-1

Beijing: The China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced on Sunday that the country’s Mars probe Tianwen-1 has travelled more than 400 million km and is expected to enter the Red Planet’s orbit next month.

As of 6 a.m. on Sunday, the probe had flown in space for 163 days and was about 130 million km from Earth and about 8.3 million km from Mars, reports Xinhua news agency.

According to the CNSA, the probe is functioning stably and is scheduled to slow down before entering Mars orbit in more than a month and preparing itself to land on the Red Planet.

Since its launch on July 23, 2020, the Mars probe has captured an image showing both Earth and the Moon, as well as taking several selfies. I

t has carried out three orbital corrections, a deep-space manoeuver and self-checks on multiple payloads.

The Tianwen-1 probe, weighing about five tonnes, consists of an orbiter, a lander and a rover.

It is designed to complete orbiting, landing and roving in one mission.

After entering the Mars orbit, it will spend two to three months surveying potential landing sites, using a high-resolution camera to prepare for the landing in May.

The most challenging part of the mission will be the soft landing, an autonomous process of the probe lasting seven to eight minutes, according to the CNSA.

The probe will use its aerodynamic shape, parachute and retrorocket to decelerate and buffer legs to touch down.

After the landing, the rover will be released to conduct scientific exploration with an expected lifespan of at least 90 Martian days (about three months on Earth), and the orbiter, with a design life of one Martian year (about 687 days on Earth), will relay communications for the rover while conducting its own scientific detection.

Tianwen-1 means ‘Questions to Heaven’ and comes from a poem written by Qu Yuan (about 340-278 BC), one of the greatest poets of ancient China.

Chennai: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has chalked out its decadal plan which includes development of a heavy lift rocket, reusable satellite launch vehicle, semi-cryogenic engine, and others, said a top official.

In the short term, the space agency has to realise the first developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) operational Geo-Imaging capability, the third moon mission Chandrayaan-3, the first solar mission Aditya-L1, and the first Indian Data Relay Satellite.

“The first unmanned flight under the Gaganyaan Programme is another significant milestone to be achieved this year,” ISRO Chairman K. Sivan, who is also Secretary, Department of Space, ISRO said.

In his New Year message, he said all the centres/units of ISRO have actively contributed to the formulation of the decadal plan.

Sivan said: “In this decade, the VSSC (Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre), the lead centre for space transportation systems, will carry forward its competence in launch vehicle development towards heavy lift capabilities, achieving partial & full reusability and achieving progress in scramjet engine research.”

According to Sivan, the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) will fructify the much-awaited high thrust semi-cryogenic propulsion capability, which is expected to boost the lifting capability of Indian rockets to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) to almost 5.5 ton while also focusing on liquid oxygen (oxidiser)-Methane propulsion, green propulsion as well as electric propulsion.

He also said ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) needs to gear up its test facilities to support the qualification of the new propulsion systems and also expand its integration facilities to realise the new semi-cryogenic and LOX/Methane engines.

“In the next decade, emphasis will be on satellite constellation for broadband communication, all electric satellite platform and high performance satellite platforms in all the application areas,” Sivan said as regards the decadal plans for the U.R. Rao Satellite Centre (URSC).

He said the Space Applications Centre (SAC) will complete its indigenisation efforts for atomic clock and traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTA).

In this decade, SAC and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) need to work towards ensuring the collection, processing and on-demand delivery of satellite data services in line with user expectations.

As regards the rocket port under the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) scaling up of the launch infrastructure to support human spaceflight as well as new heavy lift vehicles and perhaps support and facilitate the launching of private space transportation systems in the country, Sivan said.

The Semi-Conductor Laboratory SCL will works towards creating a strong micro-electronics base in the country and enhance capabilities in Very Large Scale Integrated circuit (VLSI) domain.

“A lion’s share of ISRO’s technology development & advanced R&D activities is expected to be carried out for facilitating the Gaganyaan (human space mission) programme and sustaining the human spaceflight activities in the long term,” Sivan added.

On its part, the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC), in association with all other ISRO centres, is working towards the enhanced capabilities essential for the human spaceflight programme including the human rated launch vehicle, Orbital Module, rendezvous and docking, regenerative life support systems and space habitats, Sivan added.

New Delhi: Software major Adobe has bid goodbye to its iconic Flash Player as major internet browsers shut it down on Friday and Microsoft blocked it in most versions of Windows.

Adobe had earlier said to stop supporting Flash on December 31 and block Flash content from running on January 12.

First announced in July 2017, Adobe had said to stop updating and distributing Flash Player after December 31, 2020 due to the diminished usage of the technology and the availability of better, more secure options such as HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly.

Microsoft has announced to end support for Adobe Flash Player on Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 at the end of the year.

Some enterprise customers may still require Flash Player commercial support and licensing beyond 2020 to run internal business systems.

According to media reports, the Internet Archive is preserving Flash games and animations, including hits like “Peanut Butter Jelly Time.”

“We want to take a moment to thank all of our customers and developers who have used and created amazing Flash Player content over the last two decades,” Adobe said in an update last month.

“We are proud that Flash had a crucial role in evolving web content across animation, interactivity, audio, and video. We are excited to help lead the next era of digital experiences”.

Adobe had recommended all users to immediately uninstall Flash Player to help protect their systems.

US-European Solar Orbiter Spacecraft Makes Its First Venus Flyby

London: The joint US-European Solar Orbiter spacecraft has completed its first of many gravity assist flybys of Venus, to start bringing it closer to the Sun and tilting its orbit in order to observe our star from different perspectives.

The spacecraft’s closest approach to Venus took place at 12.39 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on Sunday.

“First #VenusFlyby completed for #SolarOrbiter,” the official Twitter handle of the spacecraft tweeted.

A partnership between NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), the probe was launched in February to study the Sun.

Its mission is to perform unprecedented close-up observations of the Sun and from high-latitudes, providing the first images of the uncharted polar regions of the Sun, and investigating the Sun-Earth connection.

The Solar Orbiter’s path around the Sun has been chosen to be “in resonance” with Venus, which means that it will return to the planet’s vicinity every few orbits and can again use the planet’s gravity to alter or tilt its orbit, the ESA said.

The next encounter will be in August 2021,the agency said.

Initially, the spacecraft will be confined to the same plane as the planets, but each encounter of Venus will increase its orbital inclination.

By 2025 it will make its first solar pass at 17 degree inclination, increasing to 33 degree by the end of the decade, bringing even more of the polar regions into direct view.

This will result in the spacecraft being able to take the first ever images of the Sun’s polar regions, crucial for understanding how the Sun “works”, for investigating the Sun-Earth connection and how we can better predict periods of stormy space weather, the ESA said.

India To Witness Two Of Four Eclipses In 2021

Indore: There will be four eclipses in 2021, including one total solar eclipse and one total lunar eclipse, but only two will be visible from India, Ujjain-based Jiwaji Observatory’s Superintendent Dr Rajendraprakash Gupt said on Sunday.

He told PTI that the first of these events will be on May 26, and will be seen in parts of West Bengal, coastal Odisha and in the north-eastern states, except Sikkim, as the moon is visible earlier in these places than other parts of the country.

“The earth will cover the moon by 101.6 per cent during this astronomical event,” he said.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the earth comes between the sun and the moon.

Gupt said the annular solar eclipse on June 10 will not be visible in India, and in this event, the moon will come between the sun and earth, leading to the sun getting covered 94.3 per cent and being seen as a ‘ring of fire’.

He said the partial lunar eclipse, on November 19, can be seen from Arunachal Pradesh and some parts of Assam for a very short period.

“At the peak of this event, 97.9 per cent of the moon will be seen covered by the earth’s shadow. The total solar eclipse on December 4, the last of 2021, will, however, not be visible from India,” he added.

This year, there were two solar and four lunar eclipses.

New Delhi: Do you know that your iPhone has a calculator with a scientific mode which is visible when the device is kept in a portrait mode — a feature that can help students and researchers in the remote learning times.

To access the iPhone’s built-in calculator app with a scientific mode, just tilt it sideways as you frequently do while streaming your favourite movie on Netflix or playing a mobile game like Call of Duty.

What you see is a revelation: the calculator app on iPhone unlocks several functionalities, like adding numbers to memory, parentheses, exponents, and trigonometric functions.

The feature was actually introduced in iOS 2.0 back in 2008 but since most people did not notice the update as they are used to open the calculator app when the iPhone is held vertically.

Apple Apple Store even has a screenshot of it for the calculator app.

In the calculator app, you can perform basic arithmetic calculations with the standard calculator.

“Or use the scientific calculator for exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions,” according to Apple.

You can touch and hold the calculation result in the display, tap copy, then paste the result somewhere else, such as a note or message.

“If you make a mistake when you enter a number, swipe left or right on the display at the top”.
