Kendrapada: In a bizarre incident, a woman in Marsaghai area of Kendrapara allegedly possessed by the ghost of her deceased husband has narrated how her hubby was murdered and did not commit suicide.

The deceased identified as Subodh Nayak was found hanging from an electric pole on July 2.  However, after 6 days, family members lodged a complaint alleging Nayak was murdered and to pass it off as a suicide his body was hanged from the electric pole.

What is startling is the fact that villagers claim Nayak’s wife, who has been possessed by his dead husband’s spirit has narrated the whole incident pointing at a pre-planned murder by Badapalia village resident Tapan Das and his relatives.

It is also alleged that the accused had also suggested the family members of the deceased to cremate the latter’s body without informing the police.

Subsequently, villagers gheraoed the Marsaghai Police Station demanding justice for the family of the deceased.

Meanwhile, police have registered a complaint and investigating the case with the help of a scientific team.

Inspector-in-charge of Marsaghai Police Station, Kalindi Behera said, “We have registered a case and an investigation is currently underway. Only after the investigation is complete we can come to a conclusion.”

Bhubaneswar: From tender works to stevedoring to real estate and hotel chains, arrested gangster Sayed Usman Ali aka Tito has allegedly set up a huge empire from the ill-gotten money through his crime syndicate.

The Special Task Force (STF) of Crime Branch will soon move court seeking permission to attach the property of gangster Tito which is estimated to be over Rs 100 crore.

The Crime Branch is preparing a blue print to attach the property of Tito on the basis of The Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 1944.

“Odisha government had come up with a law to seize property of those involved in criminal activities or any illegal businesses,” said former DG Sanjiv Marik.

Crime Branch sources said efforts are also on to ascertain Tito’s involvement in ‘Hawala’ racket. Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax department would also be approached for investigation into Tito’s monetary transactions.

It is suspected that Tito used to carry out monetary transactions worth crores through the bank accounts in the name of his wife.

Tito, who owns several luxury cars, is also believed to have invested in several properties including hotels in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Goa.

The investigation agency is hopeful to elicit more information regarding Tito during the second phase interrogation. Today, the court allowed STF to take the gangster on remand for four more days.
“Court has allowed us four days remand. As our investigation is still on, it won’t be proper to reveal anything on Tito’s links and findings as it may hamper the investigation,” said Crime Branch DSP, Ramchandra Thambe.
“There is no law that bars anyone who has already left criminal activities from buying property. First let STF prove that the property belongs to the accused,” said Tito’s laywer, Bana Bihari Mohanty.

However, the members who started their journey on July 5 were stopped by the police at Master Canteen square today.

Subarnapur: Salaries of two teachers at the Singhiyuva UGME school of Binika block in Subarnapur district are likely to be withheld  for the callous and irresponsible manner in which they handled a student who broke his limbs following an accident inside the school premises.

As per reports, the incident took place when a student while playing, fell off a toilet building terrace and broke his hand.

The boy, writhing in pain was taken to his house by a few school teachers who despite finding that his parents were away left him alone to fend for himself.

A few hours after, home after getting the news from their neighbours,  parents of the boy rushed home and took him to the nearest hospital.

“We were not at the home when the teachers brought our son home. Instead of taking him to the hospital, they left him here all alone. How could they be so insensitive?” mother of the injured boy asked.

Headmaster of the school Lekha Mishra refuted the allegations saying that it was the boy who told them that his sister would be present at home.

“The incident took place before 9:30 am in the morning and he informed that his sister would be at home. So one of our teachers drove him on his bike and dropped him home,” said Mishra.

Following the uproar over the incident, the BEO (Block Education Officer) has shot off a letter to the DEO(District Education Officer) to freeze salaries of the accused teachers and suspend them .

Kandhamal: On July 8, 2016 five persons including three women and a baby boy returning to Gumudumaha in an autorickshaw after collecting NREGA wages were killed after a 15-member team of the state’s anti-Maoist paramilitary force and the Special Operations Group allegedly fired at the vehicle.

Following the incident, the state government had promised justice to the victims but even after two years a little has changed in the village.

“The government had assured to provide us all facilities like water, medical facilities and mobile network connectivity but not a single promise has been fulfilled. We are facing a lot of difficulties,” Gumudumaha resident Kanteswar Majhi said.

Dapala Malik, husband of one of the victims, Medialu Malik, said,“After my wife was killed by the security personnel the government has not done anything for us yet.”

Till date there are no proper roads or medical facilities in the village, sources said. Although pipelines have been laid out and work for water tank has commenced, water connection is yet to be given.

Premil Malik, a local ward member, said, “After the incident, the  government officials had assured to provide all basic facilities to our village  but nothing has been done yet.”

Father of the auto driver, who was carrying the victims on that fateful night said, “I had bought an autorickshaw for my son so that he could support the family financially but after the incident the autorickshaw was damaged and my son couldn’t earn anymore. We haven’t got any support from the government yet.”

Notably, the government had set up a SIT(Special Investigation team) as well as a Commission  to investigate the Gumudumuha firing incident. However, the report was never made public.

PCC(Pradesh Congress Congress) working president Pradeep Majhi said, “The accused police personnel were given clean chit by the state government, a decision which has been strongly opposed by the residents of Gumudumaha. In the upcoming elections, they will respond to bullets with ballot.”

Similarly, BJP member Netraman Seth also accused the government of cheating the villagers with false promises.

“The state government had made several promises for the welfare of Gumudumuha residents after the firing incident but nothing has been fulfilled yet. It seems the government lacks interest,” Seth said.

Bhubaneswar: Amidst the controversy stirred by a letter from Odisha government seeking clarification on Governor’s chopper expenses, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president, Niranjan Patnaik sought an explanation from the Chief Minister on his Rs 26.55 crore expenditure pertaining to helicopter rides by him and his party members in last 3 years.

Niranjan took to Twitter and wrote: “Wouldn’t it be just great if CM also explains how he & his colleagues spent Rs 26.55 CRORE on helicopter rides in last 3 years!”

According to sources, the State government doesn’t have its own airplanes and choppers and rents them from a company OSS Air Management Pvt Ltd.

For 33 hours 45 minutes, Rs 92,76,275 was paid to OSS for a twin engine helicopter in May 2018, however, on May 16 another helicopter from Pinnacleair Pvt Ltd was used for CM’s visit to Jharsuguda. The bill amount for which was Rs 10,33,000 for a single visit.

Slamming the BJD ministers and the CM, Congress leader and opposition chief whip Taraprasad Bahinipati said “Sports minister used a helicopter to watch a football match while CM Naveen Patnaik uses choppers to go to Cuttack. They are misusing the taxpayer’s money.”

Similarly, BJP spokesperson Golak Mahapatra said: “The expenses of the choppers meant for anti-Maoist operations used by Odisha government ministers should be revealed in public.”

According to a CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) report, Pawan Hans choppers meant for anti-Maoist operations are being used by BJD ministers. These choppers were used 341 times out of which they were deployed 53 times for anti-Maoist operations and the rest for government work.

In general, States keep their own choppers to use it for important works. Odisha government too had their own choppers but during Naveen Patnaik’s tenure the choppers were sold off, sources said.

Even questions are being raised on the existence of the Directorate of Aviation and government aviation training institute at a time when flights and choppers are being rented.

Speaking on the issue, Pilot Captain Raj Mohapatra said “On many occasions luxury aircrafts have been used for the Chief Minister. Even though there is a Directorate of Aviation and a training institute, the Odisha government is not interested and chooses to get planes on rent.”

Meanwhile, ruling-BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra has termed the allegations levelled by the Opposition as baseless.

“Odisha government is currently inspecting the issue. If any problems are found they will be resolved. But it won’t be apt to respond to the baseless allegations of the Opposition,” Patra said.

Bhubaneswar: The special task force (STF) of Odisha Crime Branch will be seeking Interpol’s help in tracing linkages of the pangolin scales smuggling racket in China and Myanmar.

Crime Branch STF DIG, Himanshu Lal today said that while the main accused in India have been arrested, those who are operating from China and Myanmar are yet to be arrested.

“The STF has arrested kingpin Anwar Hussain and another smuggler Konga from Mizoram. Both of them were smuggling pangolin scales to Myanmar and China. While main accused in India have been arrested we are writing to Interpol to nab the culprits who are operating from Myanmar and China,” said Lal.

The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau will also be informed about the case, said sources.

Till now 6 people have been arrested for smuggling pangolin scales from Odisha, West Bengal and Mizoram to Myanmar and China.

According to reports, among the smugglers, there are some female members. The scales were being brought from small hunters at a price of Rs 12,000 per Kg and sold for lakhs of rupees in the international market, informed sources.

It is suspected that Odisha has become the hub for illegal pangolin trade. Through several north eastern States, the animals are reportedly trafficked to China, Indonesia and other international markets.

Nayagarh: Tension erupted at Nayagarh district headquarters hospital today following the death of an infant, who died after swallowing a bottle cap.

According to sources, an 8-month-old baby of Golgola village under Nuagaon block had swallowed a bottle cap while playing this Sunday following which he was admitted to the headquarters hospital.

But he died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Family members of the deceased infant blamed the absence of paediatricians as the main reason behind the death of the child.

“My child had swallowed a bottle cap while playing. When we brought him to the hospital he was declared dead. There were no doctors in the hospital when we came here,” father of the infant said.

On the other hand the doctor who first saw the infant said that the condition of the infant was already bad when he was brought here.

“It was probably a bottle cap stuck in his throat and the condition of the patient was very bad when he was brought here,” Dr. Monalisa Swain said.

Irate over the incident, locals resorted to vandalism and blocked the National Highway-57.

Due to the road blockade, vehicular movement on the Khurda-Bolangir highway was disrupted for a few hours. Police who arrived at the spot after receiving the information tried to pacify the public but the protestors continued to stage demonstration following which the cops resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Bhadrak: Someone rightly said “necessity is the mother of all inventions” and the work of an engineering graduate from Odisha is another example.

Rakesh Kumar Nayak, a resident of Bhandaripokhri area of Bhadrak has developed a cycle that runs on solar energy and can go at a maximum speed of 30km/hr without pedaling.

The cycle has been built at a cost of Rs 12,000 and is equipped with a solar panel, a battery and a motor.

Rakesh, who comes from a poor financial background completed his engineering in 2015 and later decided to support his family financially.

Subsequently, he started looking for jobs using his father’s bike but when the latter was unhappy over his fuel expenses, Rakesh decided to upgrade a cycle into a solar-powered one.

“Keeping in view the increasing petrol and diesel prices and rising pollution levels, I have equipped the cycle with a solar panel using the money that I earned from repairing work,” said Rakesh.

“I want the government to acknowledge my work so that I can develop it further,” Rakesh added.

Rakesh’s father Subash Chandra Nayak said, “I used to scold him for using my bike as I am financially not so strong to pay for his petrol expenses. So he took my broken cycle and upgraded it. But what he has created is good for the society and I am proud of him.”

Rakesh’s friend Pravat Kumar Sahu said, “I feel proud of my friend for developing such a cycle. It will help in fighting pollution. I request the government to help him.”

Similarly, Padmalochan Sathua, Rakesh’s neighbour said that Rakesh has the potential to achieve success with government aid.

“With government’s aid he can further develop the cycle and bring fame to our village,” Sathua said.

Bhubaneswar: Members of the Indian Youth Congress today organised a rally in Bhubaneswar alleging central government’s failure to resolve farmers’ issues and provide employment to youths.

A bike rally was also carried out by the Youth Congress members under “Yuva Adhikaar Samavesh” during which a scuffle broke out between the Police and members of the Youth Congress at Raj Mahal Square of the city.

Congress leader Sangram Jena alleged that both the Centre and the State have failed to provide employment to the youths of Odisha.

“Neither the Centre nor the State government has been able to provide jobs to youth. While youths of Odisha are going outside the State to work in factories, most of the jobs in Odisha have been given to outsiders,” Jena said.

“This is not an individual’s fight, but of lakhs of unemployed youths,” he added.

The rally was attended by OPCC chief Niranjan Patnaik, Congress leader Chiranjib Biswal, President of Indian Youth Congress Keshav Jadhav and Vice-President BV Srinivas.

During the rally, the members raised slogans against the Centre and urged everyone to fight against injustice.

According to sources, the protesting members have also planned to gherao Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s residence Naveen Niwas.

Barbil: At the age of 6, Babulu Munda won his maiden medal (Silver) in the very first attempt at 16th All Odisha Kick Boxing Championship held at Bhubaneswar on 18th December 2011.

Since then he never looked back. With regular practice and hard work, he has been selected to participate in 7th World Wushu Championship at Brazil from 9-16th July this year.

Babulu, a resident of Sialijoda village under Deojhar Grampanchayat of Keonjhar district now studies in 8th standard of Govt. Nodal U.P. School, Barbil.

After being spotted by JSPL Foundation in 2011, Babulu was supported for training at Sialijoda Primary School under Coach Pankaj Kumar Mahanta, an Asian Indoor Games Kickboxing Medalist.

Since the beginning, Munda’s enviable knack for martial arts and quick learning attitude had impressed the Coach. And after a six-month rigorous training, supported by JSPL Foundation, Babulu won the Silver medal at the State level championship.

“On a daily basis I impart training to students at the school. But I was overwhelmed with the impressive accuracy of this boy (Babulu) in my first session with him. Initially I thought it could be a coincidence. But in my every session he came out with flying colours and consistency,” said Mahanta.

By the time Munda completed his Primary education in 2016, he had at least 10 medals (7-Gold, 1-Silver, 4- Bronze) to his credit in just 12 events. Brought up by his grandmother, a daily wage labourer, for this parentless tribal boy, neither poverty nor lack of facilities could ever deter him from achieving success.

Impressed over the masterful performance of Babulu, JSPL Foundation, which has been promoting rural and ethnic sports in the region, extended all out support to him, starting from his admission for higher studies in Urban David School, to training, providing nutritional supplements and facilitating his participation in State and National level Championships.

Babulu’s passion for martial arts has earned him 17 medals from 21 events so far at State and National levels- the latest being Silver medal in the 17th Sub-Junior Wushu National Championship held from 27th to 31st March, 2018 at Jammu & Kashmir.

The tribal boy’s stunning performance at the Sub-Junior National Coaching Camp at SAI, Bhopal in May this year confirmed berth for his Brazil tour. Currently, he is under training in China.

Babulu, now a well-known figure in the Sub-junior category, has already brought several laurels to the State. Now he aims to hit the yellow metal for India. “Yes, I will make it Gold for my country”, an elated Babulu said.

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to encourage inter-caste marriage among the Hindu community in the State, the Odisha government has increased the incentive from the present Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh.

The SC and ST Development Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi said the hiked incentives would be implemented with retrospective effect from September 14, 2017 and be given in a marriage between upper caste Hindus and SC Hindus.

The amount would be given irrespective of the economic status of the marrying couple.

In August last year, the state government had hiked the incentives to Rs 1 lakh from Rs 50,000 to encourage more such inter-caste marriages.

As per the norms, the couple shall have to apply for sanction and will have to execute a bond. The couple has to refund the amount within a year if the marriage ends in divorce within five years, said an official.

In the 2017-18 financial year, the state government has awarded about Rs 2.65 crore to 543 couples.

Bolangir: In a crackdown on sale of medicines without prescriptions, Odisha government has given orders to constitute squads and conduct raids to curb such practice.

In the absence of awareness on deadly consequences of buying prescription-only drugs over the counter, such illegal practice is rampant and posing a serious threat.

According to sources, most of the medicine shops in Bolangir are selling medicines without doctor’s prescription.

“Doctors are not present all the time to write prescriptions so patients and their kin go directly to the shops and ask for medicines. Shopkeepers also don’t hesitate to give them medicines,” a resident, Jitendria Tripathy said.

Another resident Dibyashankar Patnaik said “It is difficult to get an appointment with doctors these days, so most people prefer to go to the shops and ask for medicines.”

Despite being aware that sale of medicines without prescription is illegal; shopkeepers are blatantly violating the norms.

“We don’t have any official order preventing us from giving medicines without prescriptions. So we are selling them except for those medicines used in critical cases,” a shopkeeper Vivek Goyal said.

According to sources, the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) reportedly brought the issue to the notice of the Odisha Health Department.

Health department secretary, Pramod Kumar Meherda has written a letter to the Drugs Controller and has urged action against errant shopkeepers.

The letter mentions the deadly consequences of consuming medicines with a detailed note: “The Serious Problem of Availability of Prescription Medicines without a Prescription in India & Possible Solutions.”

Further, in the letter, the Drugs Controller has been requested to start a state-wide drive to sensitize common people about the dangers associated with consumption of medicines without a valid prescription.

It has also urged the government to form squads at district level and conduct raids.

Responding to the issue, Drugs Controller, Hrushikesh Mohapatra has said that proper action will be taken against such illegal acts.

“First awareness meetings will be held. Then, inspections will be carried out and violations will be reported,” said Mohapatra.

Mohapatra further added that the drug sellers will be served show-cause notices and after getting their replies, hearing will be done and subsequently their licenses will be cancelled.

Bhubaneswar: In what could be a boon for train travellers, the East Coast Railway today announced that the Bhubaneswar New station would be made functional before the Rath Yatra. It is scheduled to be inaugurated on July 7.

Close to Patia Halt station, the new station which is located between Barang and Mancheswar stations, aims to ease the rush at the Bhubaneswar station and also help commuters facing difficulties due to increasing road traffic.

With facilities similar to that of Bhubaneswar station, initially only three passenger trains will ply from this new station that has six platforms. Later, the services would be augmented at the station and Express trains too will have stoppages at the new station, officials said.

Speaking to media, ECoR senior PRO Nirakar Das informed, “Six platforms have been opened. The station has all basic amenities and facilities for the passengers. The new station has been constructed at a cost of Rs 28 crore and everything is in place for it to get operational.”

Passengers too breathed a sigh of relief after the announcement. “Travelling from one half of the capital city to the other is so difficult nowadays. Our expense will be reduced and we can avoid road traffic. Half of the people can come to the new station and half of them can go to old one. It’s a good thing,” expressed Vaishnav Ray, a student.

“Like New Delhi, Bhubaneswar should also have 3-4 stations. If it’s Capital city, it should have this much facility for the commuters (Rajdhani Hai Toh Itni Suvidhayein Honi Chahiye). Half of the problems will reduce,” said a tourist, Girish Srivastav.

The construction of the Bhubaneswar New Railway station had started in 2012. Though the railway authorities had set a target to complete the construction work by May 2015, it was delayed by more than three years.

Bhubaneswar:  Already in the eye of the storm after being caught from a spa in Kolkata, former Dhenkanal MLA Nabin Nanda on Tuesday lashed out at the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for suspending him without issuing any show-cause notice.

Nanda further alleged that he has been a victim of the ongoing wrangle between the third floor and former Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda. Moreover, Nanda said that Panda was targeted for tweeting about him.

Expressing concerns over the state of affairs in BJD, Nanda alleged that  it is the same ‘coterie’ of tainted leaders who have been either caught in viral videos and chit fund scam that is calling the shots in BJD.

“BJD has history of dumping people after using them. I was just a suspect in the case, and without seeking any clarification or explanation, I was suspended,” said Nanda.

The former MLA further stated that “Was I in BJD that they have suspended me? After the midnight coup operation by former bureaucrat Pyarimohan Mohapatra, we from NCP had joined BJD on June 5 in 2012 just to save the party. But the party (BJD) neglected me and I was also not given a ticket.”

“As I was not holding any post in BJD, suspension, dismissal from party holds no significance as I had earlier informed CM Naveen Patnaik that I would contest elections whether given ticket or not,” he added.

Nanda vented his anger a day after he was suspended from BJD yesterday. He was arrested on Saturday evening from a spa in Park Street, Kolkata under Immoral Trafficking Act and was granted bail on Sunday.

Sources said a case under Indian Penal Code Section 120B read with 3/4/5/7/18 I.T (P) Act has been registered against 18 persons including Nanda, nine sex workers and three clients who were nabbed from the spa in Kolkata.

Nanda on the other hand had rubbished such allegations and maintained that he had not visited the spa with ‘any wrong intention.’ Rather, he was detained by police after he entered the spa during an attempt to chase a pickpocket.

Nabarangpur: In yet another incident of drowning, two minor sisters died in Kumudaguda village under Jharigaon block of Nabarangpur district today.

According to sources, the matter came to light after 10-year-old Nila Santa and her younger sister 8-year-old Champa did not return after going to the pond to take bath along with some friends.

Subsequently, the family members informed the Fire Department and with the help of some village youths the bodies of the two minor girls were recovered.

Later, Jharigaon police reached the spot and started an investigation.

Multiple incidents of deaths due to drowning have been reported in the state this year.

On June 9, a 14-year-old boy along with her mother was swept away in Baitarani River near Bandal village of Jajpur district. Later, the boy died while undergoing treatment at Jajpur Town Medical.

Earlier this year, the Special Relief Commissioner and Disaster Management Secretary, B P Sethi had informed that Odisha government has registered 1,292 deaths due to drowning between 2015-16 and 2017-18 with an average of almost 431 deaths per annum.

While 246 cases of drowning were reported in 2015-16, it went up to 428 in 2016-17 and 618 in 2017-18. This, however, did not include drowning deaths during flood as such cases have been reported as flood-related deaths.

New Delhi: Muktikanta Biswal, who was taken into custody by Delhi police yesterday for sitting on a hunger strike near Jantar Mantar, has resumed his protest at Ramlila Maidan.

Biswal, who has travelled to Delhi on foot to meet the PM and remind him about his promises on upgradation of the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela to a super specialty hospital, said he will continue to sit on hunger strike till his demand of meeting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not fulfilled.

“Delhi police picked me up from Jantar Mantar yesterday and left me here at Ramlila Maidan. My hunger strike will continue till the time I haven’t met PM Modi,” said Biswal.

“I appeal everyone to come together to resolve the issues,” Biswal added.

The 30-year-old Rourkela resident had started his walk from the IGH campus of the steel city on April 16 to remind the PM about the promise he made about upgrading the IGH while addressing a public meeting in Rourkela on April 1, 2015.

An idol maker by profession, Biswal had fallen ill during his walk to Delhi in Agra, Uttar Pradesh and was admitted to a local hospital.
