Puri: Around eight years ago when cyclone Phailin ravaged Odisha, a little girl in a coastal hamlet near Puri was busy packing namkeen prepared by her mother in small polythene pouches, waiting for her father to return and sale those in and around the village.

The money earned from the proceeds of the sale was the only income source for sustenance of the four-member family of Diptimayee Tarai in Krushna Prasad village, situated on the outskirts of Puri town which took the maximum brunt of the devastating wind.

Though many would have stopped hoping beyond arranging a mouthful for survival, the disaster only rekindled the fighter in Dipti to achieve the impossible on the face of adversaries.

Eight years down the line, Dipti is no more the same little timid girl. She has come a long way in fulfilling her indomitable desire of becoming a soldier by qualifying for the Border Security Force (BSF), a rare feat set in the backdrop of patriarchy and neglect for the girl child.

The going, Dipti says, was tough and fraught with many difficulties.

“From my childhood days I always wanted to serve the motherland. So defence services came to my mind quite naturally,” she says of her journey.

However, what came on the way of her dreams was the meagre earnings of her father who would struggle to feed three hungry mouths back home—Dipti, her younger sister and mother.

Dipti still remembers how her father would arrange firewood during Phailin while she and her mother made Namkeen for the family’s sustenance.

Nevertheless, once she cleared Std 12 examinations, she decided to prepare for defence services by enrolling herself into the Samantara Academy in Berhampur. Her family pulled all resources to arrange the necessary finances, she says.

The toughest challenge, she says, was faced during the three years of coaching at the academy.

“I can’t remember sleeping with full stomach in all those year,” she says.

Worse were the stray comments and innuendos she would face during her visits to the village.

“People in my village would mock at me saying how much more time would I take to get a job.”

Dipti says she would visit her home quietly and return while avoiding people in the village.

In January this year, Dipti finally cracked the BSF tests for the post of Jawan and is excited about the training which will begin soon.

“I can’t sleep now waiting to begin the trainings,” she says.

Sometime before her selection, Dipti also overcame another hurdle owing to her tonsil problems. However, she underwent surgery to fix the problem and got shortlisted.

Dipti’s coach at the Samantara Academy is all praise for her remarkable achievement. “Her success story is a big example for those who fall back on poverty and social pressures to find excuses for failure. There is no dearth of facilities, one just needs to use those,” the coach says.

Puri: In a bid to provide free darshan and services to the devotees at Puri Srimandir, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has cancelled the auction process (Mahala Nilam) of various heritage points associated with the 12th-century shrine for 2021-22 financial year.

The decision regarding the development was taken at the SJTA management committee meeting in the Pilgrim City on Thursday.

According to the announcement, devotees visiting the Shree Gundicha Temple will not have to pay any amount as an entry fee from now onwards. Earlier, each devotee was charged Rs 20 as a registration fee to get entry into the temple.

The temple administration has also decided to stop auctions for fee collection at religious places like ‘Narendra Puskarini’, ‘Rohini Kunda’ and ‘Koili Baikuntha’.

According to sources, the temple administration is likely to lose around Rs 7 crore due to the cancellation of the auction process. Last year the administration had earned revenue around Rs 3.5 crore from the auction.

Devotees of Lord Jagannath across the State have welcomed the move by SJTA.

“It’s a great move by the temple administration. The decision will definitely help in increasing footfalls at Srimandir,” said a devotee.

Konark: The holy dip rituals on the occasion of Magha Saptami were conducted at the Chandrabhaga beach in Konark today without the participation of devotees due to prohibitory orders clamped in the wake of the pandemic.

As per the tradition, at around 4.30 am, the three presiding deities of Konark – Tribeniswar, Ishaneswar and Dakhineswar, all forms of Lord Shiva, were escorted on palanquins by servitors from their temples to Chandrabhaga where they were given a customary bath.

Later, servitors were allowed to take bath in the sea following which the Bahuda Yatra, the return journey of the Lords was performed.

Magha-Saptami-2

Every year, lakhs of pilgrims take the ritualistic bath in Chandrabhaga and pray to Sun God on the auspicious occasion every year. But this year, devotees have been barred from taking part in the dip rituals.

“We have strictly followed the Covid-19 guidelines while performing the Magha Saptami rituals and the number of servitors engaged to perform the ceremonies were also limited. Only 20 sevayats were allowed to pull the chariots of Sun God,” said a sevayat.

The prohibitory orders under Section 144 came into effect from11 am on Thursday and will remain in force till 1 pm today.

“The rituals were held smoothly while adhering to all the Covid-19 related norms. All the devotees cooperated with the district administration and the police,” said a local intellectual.”

Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh reviewed the security arrangements at Chandrabhaga on Thursday.

As many as 14 platoons of police force, 60 police officers, 5 DSP, 14 Inspectors, one additional SP, 200 home guards and 40 life guards were deployed in and around Chandrabhaha to ensure smooth conduct of Magha Saptami rituals.

On the seventh day of the first half of the ‘Magha’ month, it is believed that taking bath in the Chandrabhaga would cleanse skin diseases and wash away sins.

According to legend, Lord Krishna’s son Shamba was cured of leprosy after a holy dip at the Chandrabhaga River which once flowed through the precincts of the Sun Temple of Konark in Puri district, towards the Bay of Bengal.

Puri: Famous Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut visited Lord Jagannath temple at the Pilgrim Town on Friday morning and offered prayers to the Holy Trinity.

Senior servitor Madhusudana Singhari welcomed Ranaut on behalf of the Srimandir Temple administration by felicitating her with a photograph of the Trinity bedecked with the famous Suna Besha attire. The administration also presented the actress with the Mahaprasad.

Amid tight security, the Manikarnika actress offered prayers to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple following Patitapaban Darshan. She also visited the Bimala temple, Laxmi temple and Kalpa Bata.

“I feel blessed on having darshan of the Supreme Lord. I pray before the almighty that the Newyear usher happiness in the world,” said Ranaut.

“Last year was not good for me. I am fortunate to have the darshan of the lord from the beginning of this year. I hope 2021 will bring good fortune for me and the whole world. I prayed before the Lord for the success of my upcoming movie Dhaakad,” she said.

Earlier, Kangana had expressed her desire on social media to visit the Jagannath temple in 2021.

“Kangana witnessed the entire Mangala Alati of Lord Jagannath very peacefully. She was very happy to get the darshan of the lord. She called herself fortunate and prayed before the Lord for the success of her next movie,” said servitor Madhusudana Singhari.

According to sources, Kangana had arrived in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. Since she is provided Y+ security and it was her personal visit to the 12th-century shrine, her itinerary was kept secret.

In 2020, Ranaut was embroiled in a series of controversies for many reasons from bashing Bollywood’s bigwigs for nepotism to lashing out at farmers for protesting and Sushant Singh Rajput death case.

Kangana’s next major project is Dhaakad, where she will be seen as a fierce and tough international spy as she embarks on an action-filled adventure with guns blazing.

Puri: Devotion and determination have no limits. The ultimate test of devotion is how one overcomes the obstacles on the way of realising the goal.

Such a display of devotion and faith was played out on the National Highway No 316 when two visually challenged friends, who are ardent devotees of Lord Jagannath, walked from Bhubaneswar to Puri to reach the abode of the Trinity at Srimandir on Thursday.

The visually-challenged friends from Satyanagar-Banshidhar and Prashant- set out on the 60 Km arduous journey on foot with the single-minded objective of reaching their destination by braving heavy traffic along the National Highway 316 that connects Bhubaneshwar and Puri. Their wish was fulfilled when they finally made it to the sanctum of the holy shrine as the Lord wished.

“The calling was irresistible. Lord Jagannath accepts pure devotion with open arms. With his blessings we started the long and difficult journey and reached Srimandir without any trouble. Though we couldn’t see him with our mortal eyes, we witnessed and felt Him through our hearts,” said Bansidhar.

In their prayers the friends sought the Lord to make the world Covid-19 free at the earliest.

“Covid-19 has taken a heavy toll on population across the globe. We prayed the Lord for the well being of humanity,” said Prashant emotionally.

“I am an orphan. I consider Lord Jagannath as my parents. Both of us feel overwhelmed after having the darshan of Lord Jagannath after such a long journey,” he added.

Puri: The district administration of Puri has decided to enforce prohibitory order under Section 144 around Chandrabhaga beach in Konark in view of Magha Saptami dip scheduled to be observed on February 19, 2021.

The decision to impose the prohibitory order has been taken to prevent spread of COVID-19 during the festival that witnesses a mass gathering every year.

As per reports, the prohibitory order will come in to effect from 11 am of February 18 and remain in force till 1 pm of February 19.

The administration has warned the public against taking the holy dip in Chandrabhaga. However, the deities will take the customary dip as per the rituals.

As per the tradition, the presiding deities of Konark, Lord Tribeniswara, Lord Aisaneswara and Lord Dakhineswara embark on a grand procession to the Tirtha Mandap at Chandrabhaga on the auspicious occasion.

The deities then march to the NAC Bhoga Mandap and later they are taken for their customary bath early in the morning. The devotees then take holy dip at the beach before sunrise and offer their obeisance to the Sun God.

The accused identified as Kabu Pradhan of Baliguali area in Puri district was immediately rushed to Puri Sadar Hospital after the incident came to the light. He has been discharged after preliminary treatment, said reports.

As per reports, Pradhan, who is reportedly a member of a chain snatching gang active in the pilgrim town, was picked up along with four of his associates on Sunday night by the police while they were planning to execute a robbery in Talabania area.

Police sources said that the accused had used a mosquito coil stand to injure him, ostensibly to avoid interrogation.

The police personnel present at the police station stopped him from injuring himself further by overpowering him. They rushed him to the Puri Sadar Hospital for treatment.

After Kabu was discharged from the hospital he, along with the other accused were produced before the court later during the day in connection with the snatching case registered against them.

Puri: Srimandir Servitor Detained For Attacking Another Servitor

Puri: A servitor of Lord Jagannath Temple here has been detained by the Singhadwar Police for allegedly attacking fellow sevayat leading to minor injuries of his forehead, near the Uttardwara of the 12th-century shrine on Monday morning.

The accused ‘Suara’ servitor, Ramakrushna Khuntia is being interrogated by the police while the ‘Jatri Sahayak’ servitor identified as Damodar Gochikar was rushed to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) and discharged after preliminary treatment.

As per reports, Khuntia was entering the 12th century shrine with kudua (clay pots) from the ‘Hastidwara’ (northern gate) today morning when Gochikar, who was on duty at the gate stopped him and asked to take the Aswadwara (southern gate), as per the directions of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA). This led to an altercation between the two servitors.

Later in a fit of rage, Khuntia hit the Jatri Sahayak servitor with a kudua on his forehead leading to blood spill on the floor of the temple.

It may be mentioned here that the Suara servitors have been directed by the SJTA to take the southern gate while visiting the kitchen of the shrine.

“I was on duty at the Uttaradwara when Khuntia tried to enter the temple with a kudua on his hand from the gate. As kudua, rice, dal and other items are only allowed from southern gate, I intercepted him and requested him to take the other gate. On this, he started hurling abuses at me and attacked me with the clay pot,” said Gochikar.

Following a complaint by Khuntia, the Singhadwar Police Station has started an investigation into the incident. Further details awaited.

The suspended ASI identified Laxman Saran is attached to the Talabania Police Station and was deployed at Gridco Chhak for duty.

As per reports, on Tuesday Singh had visited Gridco Chhak during patrolling. Saran was supposed to be on duty in the area. However, when Singh visited the place the ASI was not found anywhere.

Puri: Devotees may not be allowed to pay obeisance to the Holy Trinity at Shree Jagannath Temple in the Piligrim city during ‘Padma Mukha Besha’ of the deities on Sunday due to the prevailing Covid-19 situation.

The Padma Mukha Besha of Lord Jagannath and his siblings falls between the new moon day of Magha and Basanta Panchami. The deities will adorn the besha all through the Saturday night.

However, the devotees may be deprived of the darshan on Sunday morning as per the on-going Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). As per the SOP the temple premises will be sanitised on Sunday and devotees are not allowed to have darshan.

Meanwhile, the servitors have urged the temple administration to allow the devotees to have the darshan of the Trinity in the rare attire.

“Covid-19 has subsided in Odisha. It is almost non-existent in Puri. Sunday being a holiday, devotees often come with their families to have darshan of lord Jagannath. Considering the current situation, they should be allowed entry into the temple to have a glimpse of the ‘Padma Mukha Besha,” said senior servitor Rabishankar Pujapanda.

Devotees have also requested the administration to allow them entry into the temple on Sunday.

“We were not allowed to have the darshan of Trinity on the rarest attire of Nagarjuna Besha due to the pandemic. Now the situation is under control. People should be allowed entry into all the three doors including the Singhadwar and have darshan of the Trinity in a disciplined manner on Sunday,” said a devotee.

On the other hand, the temple administration has made it clear that a decision regarding it will be taken soon.

“We will discuss about the demand of the servitors and the devotees in the coming managing committee meeting and a decision regarding it will be taken soon,” said Ajay Kumar Jena, Srimandir Development Administrator.

Nagarjuna Besha

Puri: Nagarjuna Besha of Lord Jagannath and siblings will not be held in 2021 as stated earlier by the almanac writers of Srimandir in December 2020. The announcement was made by the Administrator (Rituals) of Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), Jitendra Sahu on Tuesday.

Addressing a presser, Sahu said, “It is a standard practice in Srimandir to invite all the calendar makers to submit their calendars bearing dates and time of all the rituals to be held in Srimandir in a particular year with the Mukti Mandap Scholar Council. A committee comprising Mukti Mandap Scholars and other stakeholders review the suggestions and finalise the dates after due calculations.”

“In today’s meeting, it has been unanimously accepted by the pandits that Nagarjuna Besha does not fall in 2021,” Sahu added.

Notably, some calendars for 2021 had a date for Nagarjuna Besha of the Trinity which led to some confusion among devotees.

Harishankar Mishra, member of the Mukti Mandap Scholar Council said, “All the dates of rituals in the temple were decided upon in the coordination meeting held today. As far as the Nagarjuna Besha is concerned, it will not be held in 2021.”

“I have personally requested the government to take action against those calendar makers who have published such misleading and false dates hurting the religious sentiments of the devotees,” Mishra added.

Lord Jagannath and sibling deities were adorned with the Nagarjuna Besha attire after a hiatus of 26 years on November 27, 2020. However, the rituals were performed only in presence of servitors and temple officials due to Covid-induced restrictions.

Puri Srimandir Servitors, BJP Welcome Withdrawal Of NMA Heritage By-Law; Thank Union Culture Minister

Bhubaneswar: A delegation of servitors from Puri Lord Jagannath Temple, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra met Union Culture Minister Prahalad Singh Patel and thanked him for withdrawing contentious Heritage by-laws for Puri Srimandir.

The Union Ministry of Culture on Monday had directed the National Monument Authority (NMA) to withdraw the draft notification for the proposed heritage by-laws for the 12th-century shrine after a team of BJP MPs from Odisha led by Dharmendra Pradhan met him stressing for removal of the bylaws.

Moreover, a team of BJD MPs also met Patel separately yesterday seeking his intervention in the withdrawal of the contentious Heritage By-laws.

Following the separate meetings with the BJP and BJD MPs, the Union Culture Minister, in a tweet, stated that he has directed NMA authorities to withdraw the draft notification for the contentious bylaws. The Minister added that the draft notification was issued without the knowledge of chairperson of the NMA.

Earlier on Monday, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had demanded withdrawal of the notification for the proposed bylaws during his visit to Puri.

Patnaik who took his first visit of the temple after it reopened for visitors last month, said that no one could stop development works around the 12th century shrine as part of the Government’s heritage corridor project.

“The Central Government should remove the heritage bylaws. No one can stop good works of the Lords,” Patnaik had said.

Over 1.25 Lakh Devotees Visited Puri Jagannath Temple After Reopening

Puri: The Union Ministry of Culture on Monday directed the National Monument Authority (NMA) to withdraw the draft notification for the proposed heritage by-laws for the Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri.

The development came hours after Odisha Chief Minister demanded withdrawal of the notification for the proposed bylaws.

In a tweet, Union Culture Minister Prahlad Singh Patel stated that he has directed NMA authorities to withdraw the draft notification for the contentious bylaws. The Minister added that the draft notification was issued without the knowledge of chairperson of the NMA.

Patel informed delegations of Odisha MPs–both BJP and BJD-who met him separately regarding his direction for the withdrawal of the bylaws.

A team of BJP MPs from Odisha led by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and a team of BJD MPs led by Puri Lok Sabha member Pinaki Mishra met Patel separately in New Delhi on Monday and submitted memorandums for withdrawing the new bylaws.

Union Minister Pratap Sarangi, who accompanied the delegation to Patel, said, “All the BJP MPs from Odisha submitted a memorandum to the Minister requesting him to withdraw the Bylaw.”

Terming the NMA draft notification as a bureaucratic error, Sarangi said, “The Minister did not know about such a notification being sent by one of bureaucrats of the department. However, Minister Patel has already withdrawn the order,” Sarangi said.

Similarly. BJD MP from Puri, Pinaki Mishra said, “I think the public opinion and sentiment in odisha made the Centre withdraw the draft law.”

Srimandir Servitors who would have been the most affected had this Draft Law been implemented on the ground level, expressed their happiness. Speaking to OTV, senior Servitor, Binayak Das Mohapatra said, “We are all happy after the Bylaw was withdrawn today. I think there is some kind of political interest concealed behind this.”

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had demanded the same soon after offering prayers to Lord Jagannath in Puri. Patnaik who took his first visit of the temple after it reopened for visitors last month, said that no one could stop development works around the 12th century shrine as part of the Government’s heritage corridor project.

“The Central Government should remove the heritage bylaws. No one can stop good works of lords,” Patnaik said.

“This is the first time I am visiting the temple in the time of Covid pandemic.  I prayed for the peace and prosperity of the people. I again thank the people who have made sacrifices for the temple,” he said while addressing media in front of the Singhdwar.

During his tour, Patnaik appreciated the temple and administrative officials for their efforts in taking forward government’s heritage corridor project in the pilgrim town.

“He appreciated us and advised all officials to work hard for the temple development. Working for the Srimandir is blessings of Lord Jagannath. The CM’s kind words will help boost the morale and self confidence of the officials,” said Prabhutaran Sahoo, Puri Sub-collector.

Patnaik’s reaction on the heritage bylaws came a day after the Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) wrote to the NMA, demanding withdrawal of draft notification on the new norms.

As per the provisions of the bylaws set by the NMA under the Union Ministry of Culture, no development/ construction work can be carried out either by government or private agencies within 100 metres of the temple.

The bylaws were applicable for the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri and two other shrines in Bhubaneswar.

As per the bylaws an area of 100 metre (buffer zone) around Jagannath Temple and the two others were to be declared as ‘prohibited area’.

Puri: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) will soon take a call on allowing devotees to relish Lord Jagannath’s Mahaprasad on the premises of Ananda Bazar at Srimandir in the district.

The SJTA has decided to make arrangements for the devotees to purchase and consume Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar in a meeting on Sunday.

According to sources, a decision will also be taken to rehabilitate the diya sellers. There will be separate queues and shops for dry Mahaprasad and other food items (wet offerings). The rate of Abadha will also be finalised soon.

“During a meeting, we have decided to make arrangements for the devotees to purchase and consume Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar. The discussion was very fruitful. We need to control the crowd first. A decision on permitting devotees to partake Mahaprasad will be taken after re-examining the situation now,” said Puri Collector Samarth Verma.

“Decision regarding the quality and quantity of the Mahaprasad and its rate will also be decided soon,” he added.

As per the guidelines issued in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, the devotees are not allowed to eat Mahaprasad inside the temple premises. Moreover, the devotees are also barred from lighting diyas inside the 12-th century shrine.

“Devotees are now coming in large numbers to the temple. They are facing a lot of problem in relishing Mahaprasad. It’s high time that all the arrangements should be in place for allowing the devotees to partake Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar,” said Krushna Chandra Pratihari, Secretary of Suar Mahasuar Nijog.

Puri: Close on the heels of the sensational death of one K Ramesh due to alleged police excess in the custody in November last year, an Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) lodged in district jail died under mysterious circumstances at hospital on Sunday.

Jail sources said that the deceased identified as Sridhar Das fell ill on Saturday following which he was admitted to district headquarters hospital. However, he was declared dead while undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, wife of the deceased, Sabita Das has alleged foul play behind the death of her husband. She suspected that her husband has been killed in the jail. She has also lodged a complaint at Ramachandi police station in this connection.

Sources said Sridhar was arrested on charges of domestic dispute.

Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) KB Singh has assured investigation into the death of Sridhar as per guidelines of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

It is worth mentioning that K Ramesh from Baseli Sahi in Puri had died due to alleged police excess in November last year. The death of Ramesh had sparked a political furore in the State with BJP and Congress stalling the winter session of the Odisha Assembly multiple times.

Following the incident, the State government transferred the then Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhileswar Singh as an immediate measure and also effected suspensions of some other cops.

What Is NMA Heritage Draft Bylaws For Puri Srimandir All About

Bhubaneswar: The National Monuments Authority (NMA) has drafted bylaws for the centrally protected monument Shri Jagannath Temple and its subsidiary shrines in Puri.

The draft has been framed by the NMA as per Section 20(E) of Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 2010 and Rule 18 of National Monuments Authority (Appointment, Function and Conduct of Business) Rules, 2011.

Here are the details of the NMA Heritage Bylaws for Puri Srimandir:

– The draft proposes the 100 metre area around the Srimandir to be declared as ‘prohibited area’ where no constructions can be carried out, either by government or private agencies.

– A further 200 metre in all directions around the temple to be declared as ‘regulated area’ where construction is not prohibited, but must be approved by the NMA.

– While, 9.7 acres of the 12th-century shrine designated as a protected area, 37.061 acres along ‘Meghanad Pacheri’ is prohibited area whereas the regulated area is 138.385 acre.

– The NMA has also identified eight other structures- Sankhachakra temple, Mahavira temple, Timei matha, Trinatha temple, Kapalamochana temple,  Sweta Ganga Puskarini and Maa Chamunda temple as archaeological heritage remains in the pilgrim town.

-The NMA has also suggested making the prohibited and regulated zones plastic-free and hawker/vendor-free zones.

Notably, similar heritage bylaws have been drafted for two temples – Brahmeswar and Ananta Basudev, located in the Ekamra Kshetra heritage site in Bhubaneswar.

Meanwhile, Puri Collector Samarth Verma said the draft heritage bylaws is being thoroughly reviewed.

“NMA heritage bylaws for Srimandir will be reviewed thoroughly and suggestions on the draft will be sought from Jagannath Temple Administration, district authorities, PKDA, servitors and other stakeholders. Later, steps will be taken accordingly,” Verma said.

On the other hand, Srimandir servitors have opposed the draft heritage bylaws.

“The heritage bylaws will affect the servitors, people associated with temple and rituals at Srimandir. We will raise the matter during the discussion and appear before the NMA,” said     Rajat Patihari, senior servitor.

Senior servitor Binayak Dasmohapatra informed reporters that sevayat groups might knock doors of Supreme Court in connection with the matter.

“Daitapati and Bhitara Sebayat Nijogs will approach Supreme Court for legal intervention over the NMA proposal. If necessary, I might also move the apex court,” said Dasmohapatra.

Puri: A section of servitors at the Shree Jagannath Temple here on Sunday expressed unhappiness alleging that a wall of the outer chamber of the Lords’ treasure house (Bahara Ratna Bhandar) is once again leaking water sans repair.

Raising serious concern regarding the safety of the chamber, sevayat Narayan Mekap said, “We have already made several complaints with the temple administration to repair the Ratna Bhandar. However, the onus lies on the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) which has to take a decision on this.”

The concerned authorities have not commented in connection with the matter so far.

Meanwhile, in another development, the Mekap servitors present in the review meeting at the SJTA office on Sunday to discuss the issue of the delay in Lord Jagannath’s Rajarajeshwari Besha a few days ago, alleged that the dispute between the two groups erupted as there were more Singhari servitors than the allowed number during the hand-over rituals of golden ornaments atop the Ratna Sighasana (jewel throne).

This was the second such review meeting after the row between two servitors groups that saw delay in Lord Jagannath’s Suna Besha rituals and the subsequent delay in preparation of Mahaprasad on Pausha Purnima, 28 January 2021.

Earlier, in the first review meeting held on Saturday, the sect of Puspalaka servitors attributed the hold-up to administrative negligence and said the incident occurred during the Nagarjuna Besha too.

The servitors have issued an ultimatum that they would be forced to use flowers and thermocol instead of the golden ornaments for the special attire rituals in the upcoming Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath on the occasion of Dola Purnima.

Rajarajeshwara Besha

Puri: The much awaited Rajarajeswara Besha rituals of Lord Jagannath at the Srimandir in Puri began on Thursday after a delay of around five hours due to a reported dispute among servitors.

As per reports, the devotees were devoid of availing the Mahaprasad on the auspicious day of ‘Pausha Purnima’ because some servitors could not come to mutual terms regarding the Rajarajeshwar ritual of Lord Jagannath scheduled for Thursday.

A devotee, who had come to Puri to get a glimpse of the Lord in golden attire, said, “It is almost evening and I could neither avail darshan nor could get the Mahaprasad till now.”

However, after a marathon discussion between all stake holders, the ritual could finally begin after a delay of almost five hours.

Admitting the delay in rituals, Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) chief, Krishan Kumar said, “There was a dispute between two servitor groups over the number of men allowed on the ‘Singhasan’ of the Lord. It was resolved after discussion.”

“I have directed the Administrator (Rituals) to investigate the matter and submit a report,” he said.

Speaking about the action against the guilty, Krishan Kumar said, “Our priority lies at completing the ritual in time. If there is a delay, we can investigate the matter and initiate action against those found guilty, but only after completion of the ritual.”

Dodging a direct question on the reports of Srimandir Administrator (Rituals) not being present at the spot while the dispute occurred between servitors, Krishan Kumar said, “I will not say anything in this light.”

Puri: Lord Jagannath and his siblings will be adorned with the spectacular ‘Rajarajeswara Besha’ also known as ‘Suna Besha’ at Srimandir here on the auspicious occasion of ‘Pausha Purnima’ on Thursday.

As per the rituals, the holy Trinity will be decked up in golden attire after the ‘Chandana Lagi’ ritual. In the morning, Mangala Alati, Mailam, Tadap Lagi, Abakash Niti, Gopal Ballav, Shakala Dhupa rituals were performed followed by the conduct of Jala Lagi and Sarbanga.

A large number of devotees generally visit the 12th-century shrine on this pious day to get the glimpse of the Holy Trinity in the dazzling avatar on the Ratna Singhasana (Jewel Throne). It may be mentioned here that the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration has put a cap on entry of maximum 30000 devotees into the temple due to Covid restrictions.

As per mythology, Lord Rama took over the throne in Ayodhya today after 14 years of exile and therefore Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is decked up in king attire to mark the day. Pausha Purnima is a significant day for Hindus which falls on the full moon day of Pausha month in the Hindu calendar.

Similarly, the ‘Pushyabhisek’ ritual of Gajapati Maharaja of Puri Dibyasingha Deb will be performed today. As per the tradition, after ‘Panchadebata’ and ‘Shastriya’ Pujas, the special ritual will be conducted.

Servitors Test

Puri: In a bid to ensure the safety and security of the servitors of Jagannath Temple in the pilgrim town, the shrine administration has ordered to carry out Covid-19 test of the sevayats starting from today.

As per the letter issued by the Shree Jagannath Temple administration (SJTA), Covid-19 swab test (RTPCR test) of the servitors of different nijogs, office employees and outsourcing staff will be conducted at Utkal Hindi Vidyapeetha in Grand Road from January 27. The test will continue till February 27.

“Around 3000 servitors will be tested in different phases. The number of RTPCR tests will be limited to 50 persons per day,” said SJTA Chief Administrator Krishan Kumar.

Keeping in view the entry of large number of devotees into the 12th century temple, SJTA has also requested the State government for the free vaccination of the servitors. However, they are yet to get any response regarding it.

“Safety and security of the servitors is of utmost importance. So, we have initiated the testing process again,” said Kumar.

Earlier on January 21, the public was allowed entry into the temple with a major relaxation as the district administration withdrew the mandatory production of Coronavirus negative certificate as a precondition for darshan in the 12th-century shrine.

After nearly nine months, the temple was reopened in a phased manner for servitors and their families in the initial stage followed by Puri residents from December 23 last year.

The temple was finally opened to the public for darshan of the Trinity from January 3, 2021 adhering to the Covid-19 guidelines.

Puri: The district administration has decided to remove the long barricades erected on the Bada Danda of the Sri Jagannath Temple for devotees to come in queue for darshan of the deities.

Informing the development, Puri SP KB Singh said that barricades between Jagannath Ballav mutt and Marichikote Chhak will be removed following complaints of the devotees.

In their feedback, the devotees have complained that they have to wait for hours in long queues to reach the temple through barricades.

“We analysed the feedbacks received from the visitors and have decided to remove the barricades for better convenience of the pilgrims. We urge people to give more feedbacks and share their experience. All types of opinions including positive and negatives are welcomed,” Singh said.

Necessary steps have been taken to ensure a hassle-free darshan of Lord Jagannath, he added.

However, the barricades from Marichikot Chhak to the temple will remain in place, the SP said.

Following reopening of the Srimandir for public after New Year, the tourist inflow to the pilgrim town has increased with ease of restrictions including lifting of mandatory submission of Covid-19 negative certificates.

Presently, around 30,000 devotees are allowed to enter the temple in a day. The shrine shrine remains closed on Sundays for sanitisation of premises.

The 12th century temple which remained closed for nine months from March 2019 due to Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown had reopened on December 23, 2019 in a phased manner.

The temple was opened for public from January 3 this year, however devotees were asked to show Covid-19 negative report before entering the shrine.

After extensive discussions and reviews, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) later eased the restriction on January 21 and allowed the devotees to enter the temple amid strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols.
