Bhubaneswar: As Odisha is battling with the Covid-19 pandemic, another disconcerting pattern underscores the dark realities in these times of pandemic.

In the last two months, the State has witnessed many cases of suicide as vulnerable individuals, unable to cope with the loss of near and dear ones are taking the extreme step.

Subhadra Bhol of Katijanga village in Jagatsinghpur district allegedly committed suicide on account of stress following the demise of her husband. She reportedly took her own life just three days after the death of her husband Nirlipta Bhol. According to sources, the couple was quarantined at SVM College temporary medical centre (TMC) after their return from Telangana on June 30. Their samples were sent for Covid-19 test on July 1. However, Nirlipta was shifted to Covid-19 isolation ward at Jagatsinghpur district headquarters hospital on the same night after his condition worsened. He died the following morning.

Prior to taking her own life, Subhadra reportedly had released an audio clip and blamed medical negligence for the death of her husband.

“When I went to call the doctor, he did not come. The doctor arrived later. By that time my husband had stopped responding. My husband is no more, I am also going with him,” Subhadra was heard saying in the audio clip, reportedly recorded by her prior to committing suicide.

Commenting on the matter, Ajay Kumar Swain, ADMO in-charge of Jagatsinghpur said, “The sample test report of the patient had not come. When the doctor went to attend him after wearing PPE kit, he was writhing in acute chest pain. The doctor was treating him when he passed away.”

Similarly, a couple in Narayanpur Sasan under Kabisuryanagar in Ganjam district committed suicide after their only son reportedly died of Covid-19.

According to sources, the couple-Rajkishore Satpathy and Sulochana-were in shock and grief after the death of their son Simanchal. The youth was taken ill last Wednesday following which he was admitted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar, but died on Friday.

While Simanchal’s father committed suicide in a nearby forest, his mother took her own life inside the house, soon after getting the news. What is more shocking is that none from the villagers came closer to the bodies fearing Covid-19 infection. The bodies reportedly remained unattended for several hours.

Santosh Panigrahi, a local resident, said, “They committed suicide due to shock and grief. Their bodies remained hanging for 15 hours, but neither the administration nor the local residents went near. It is really very unfortunate.”

On the other hand, suicides by returnees from other states have also become a cause of concern. On April 8, the body of a person was found hanging at a TMC in Gurundia block of Sundergarh. On May 15, another person was found hanging near a quarantine centre in Mayurbhanj district. Similarly, a youth’s body was found hanging inside a quarantine centre in Kandhamal district on June 6.

Psychologist says that apart from staying alert, one should have patience in these trying times.
“Until a vaccine is ready, we have to remain alert and fight the pandemic. This period will also pass by and everything will limp back to normalcy,” said psychologist, Sangeeta Rath.

Bhubaneswar: Paradip port in Odisha has handled 25.73 million tonnes of cargo during the first quarter of the current fiscal, the highest among major ports in the country, a top port official said on Saturday.

Overcoming the hurdles caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, the port has handled 25.73 million tonnes of cargo during the April to June quarter of 2020-21 financial year, Paradip Port Trust (PPT) Chairman Rinkesh Roy said.

This is the maximum traffic recorded among major ports in the country during the quarter that ended on June 30, he said.

“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to stifle the global supply chain, the maritime industry is facing a daunting task to function smoothly. Despite all the obstacles, PPT has come out with flying colours,” Roy said.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Union Petroleum and Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan have congratulated the Paradip port authorities for handling the highest volume of cargo.

Patnaik said his father Biju Patnaik, a former chief minister, would have been proud of the giant strides made by the state in maritime trade.

“Congratulate @paradipport for becoming No-1 major #port for cargo handling in the country. Biju Babu would have been proud of #Odisha’s giant strides in maritime trade. A tribute to Odisha’s glorious seafaring history,” Patnaik tweeted.

Pradhan said PPT has set a new milestone in cargo handling. “Yet another milestone for @paradipport. Happy to learn that Paradip port has achieved the highest volume of traffic i.e. 25.73 million tonnes, among all the major ports in India during April-June 2020 (1st Quarter),” the Union minister tweeted.

Roy and PPT Deputy Chairman A K Bose have conveyed their gratitude to all the employees, unions, the state government and the Jagatsinghpur district administration for their cooperation.

They also thanked the importers, exporters, stevedores, steamer agents, port users and other stakeholders, saying “a new chapter could be written in the history of the port with their regular support”.

The PPT had joined the exclusive club of “100 million tonnes ports” by handling a record 103 MMT traffic in 2017-18.

Puri: Ending their annual sojourn, Lord Jagannath and his siblings returned to their abode, Puri Srimandir, on Saturday in Niladri Bije ritual, which marked the conclusion of Rath Yatra.

As per tradition, the ceremonial return of the deities into the temple was kicked off with the customary Goti Pahandi ritual of Lord Sudarshan. Servitors ushered the idol of the Chakraraj into the 12-century shrine amid the chants of Hari Bol and chorus of hundreds of gongs & conches.

Bada Thakura Balabhadra descended from his majestic Taladhwaja chariot and was taken into the Srimandir in ceremonial pahandi and later placed on the Ratna Singhashana after staying out of the temple for nearly 11 days.

Thereafter, servitors took out the procession of Jagat Janani Subhadra into the sanctum sanctorum. Adorned with Tahia, the special floral crown, the Goddess was escorted into the temple with the whole atmosphere reverberating with chants.

Despite absence of devotees due to Covid pandemic restrictions, the Badadanda erupted in the chants of Jai Jagannath as servitors alighted the Lord of the Universe, Kalia Thakura from his chariot, Nandighosa.

As per the tradition, during the entry of the Mahaprabhu into the shrine in singular procession, an altercation breaks out between him and an angry Goddess Laxmi who refuses to let him inside for leaving her alone in the temple during his sojourn. But when Devi Laxmi remains steadfast on not allowing the Lord through the Lion’s Gate, the latter offers Rasagola to appease her and is finally granted entry.

With the Niladri Bije, Rath Yatra which was uncertain just two weeks ago due to Covid pandemic, finally concluded.

Berhampur: Flouting Covid-19 safety norms during a marriage in Berhampur of Ganjam district proved costly as the groom, his father and three of his uncles were arrested and the concerned families were penalised Rs 50,000 each.

Gopalpur Police arrested the groom along with four other family members that included three of his uncles, in connection with the incident, which triggered widespread outrage after a video of the marriage procession emerged on social media.

Prior to the arrests, the district collector, through a tweet had informed that a sum of Rs 50,000 has been collected as penalty from each of the families of the bride and the groom. Besides, cases have been registered against both the parties and the car used in the marriage procession has been impounded by the concerned RTO, the collector informed.

Requesting people to follow social distancing norms, the district collector further wrote, “Our own joy should not ruin others life.”

According to sources, the marriage was solemnised at a 5-star hotel in Gopalpur last night. In a blatant violation of social distancing guidelines, the members of the marriage party along with the groom were seen dancing in close quarters while none them had worn any face coverings.

After the video of the marriage went viral on social media, the local Tehsildar had conducted a probe into the matter.

Later today, the collector informed that the concerned hotel where the marriage was organised has been sealed for 7 days.

“Hotel Mayfair Gopalpur sealed for 7 days for violation of social distancing for the arrangement of marriage. We won’t tolerate these type of violations. We again request all to follow social distancing norms & don’t put your life in risk in corona scenario,” the Collector tweeted. (SIC)

Referring to the violation of norms during the marriage in Berhampur, the Chief Minister’s Office said, “Odisha is in a crucial phase in the fight against COVID19 and hence, it is very essential that we all obey guidelines and regulations issued by State Government to contain the spread of Covid19. Violation of the same would lead to strong action.”

Ganjam is the worst-affected district in Odisha that accounts for 2,066 of the total 8,601 COVID19 cases reported so far in the State. Of the 495 new positive cases detected today, 216 cases were reported from the district. Ganjam’s Covid-19 death toll is highest in the State as 20 patients have already succumbed to the disease.

Bhubaneswar: In what could be a disappointment for thousands of Lord Shiva devotees in the State, the Odisha government on Saturday cancelled the Bol Bom yatra this year in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the holy Odia month of Shravan, people collect water from religious places and walk barefoot for several miles to offer the water to Lord Shiva at the popular shrines dotted across the state. The offering of the water is done on the four Mondays of the month and the devotees undertaking the yatra are generally referred to as ‘Bol Bom devotees’ or ‘kanwariyas.’

A notification issued by the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said that the above activity will not be permitted in view of the orders of the Government of India and the Government of Odisha as it has extensive potential of spreading the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In the interest of public health, the religious activities and congregations related to Bol Bom Yatra remain prohibited and the Kanwariyas/Bol Bom devotees are not allowed to carry water from any religious places or any other sources and also not allowed to walk on any public road and pour water in any temples/ Shiva temples during the Odia month of Shravan (July/August), 2020, the notification read.

Speaking about the decision at a press meet, SRC Pradeep Jena said, “We are going through a pandemic which has posed a major challenge to public health. Keeping this in view, the State government has prohibited Bol Bom activities this year.”

“As people are extending their cooperation for the past three and a half months to fight the coronavirus, we appeal to the people to extend similar support and obey the directive,” he added.

The district administration and police will ensure that the directive is implemented properly and there is no deviation, Jena added.

Bhubaneswar: The COVID-19 situation in Odisha is getting worse like Mumbai and the actual COVID-19 count would be over 1 lakh in the state, claimed Congress MLA, Santosh Singh Saluja on Saturday.

Saluja further stated that the COVID-19 testing needs to be ramped up in Odisha as only 3,000 to 4,000 tests are being conducted per day. Citing that only persons, who have symptoms and other health complications, are being tested for COVID-19, Saluja added, “The State government should immediately ramp up COVID-19 testing to include those in quarantine and temporary medical camps.”

BJP’s general secretary Prithviraj Harichandan also raised questions over the COVID-19 management by the State government as cases continue to rise in the State.

“Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik had urged people to remain cautious as COVID-19 cases are expected to rise in July. However, it seems that the State government is not taking any proactive measures to contain the spread of coronavirus,” said Harichandan.

According to Harichandan, Odisha government had removed nine IAS officers, who were assigned special duties for COVID-19 management, when irregularities in procurement of PPE kits and masks had surfaced. Though government spokesperson had claimed that new officers will be appointed for COVID-19 management, unfortunately, no new officer has been given charge, Harichandan said.

“When rate of infection is rising, the relaxed attitude of the Odisha government might worsen the COVID-19 scenario in the State. We fail to understand who is monitoring the COVID-19 management in Odisha. We expect State government to present a clear picture on the COVID situation,” Harichandan added.

Neither Odisha government officials nor the concerned ministers could be contacted for comments on the allegations levelled by the Congress and the BJP.

Balasore: The inspector-in-charge of Balasore Town Police Station, Sarojini Nayak is allegedly missing since July 1. The lady cop is ‘absconding’ since the arrest of a Sub-Inspector on the charges of corruption, Balasore Vigilance SP Santosh Kumar Mishra said.

According to Mishra, two persons including the Sub-Inspector, Bimal Kumar Kar and a middleman Santosh Das were arrested on Wednesday while allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a person to settle a land dispute.

“We suspect involvement of the IIC in the corruption. However, the lady cop is absconding since then,” said Mishra.

Mishra further informed that the concerned IIC is not responding to the calls of the Vigilance department.

“The sub-inspector and the middleman have claimed that the IIC also had a share of Rs 15,000 in the entire episode. We will investigate her involvement in the case. As per the procedure, we will first serve a notice through the SP, so that the IIC deposes before the Vigilance,” Mishra added.

Puri: A day after the Trinity was offered Adhara Pana, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath are all set to ushered into the sanctum sanctorum of Srimandir on the occasion of Niladri Bije (homecoming of the deities) today.

Niladri Bije is the concluding ritual of Rath Yatra after Suna Besha and Adhara Pana.

“Niladri Bije rituals are likely to begin from 4 PM, while Pahandi will probably start by 5 PM. All the rituals are expected to be completed by 10 PM,” said Puri district Collector Balwant Singh.
As per the rituals, the deities will be escorted by the servitors in ‘Goti Pahandi’ to the temple after ‘Sandhya Dhoopa’. Lord Sudarshan will be taken to the ‘Ratna Singhasan’ first followed by Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.

Before Lord Jagannath is escorted to the sanctum sanctorum, a traditional play is enacted between the servitors of the deity and his consort Goddess Mahalaxmi.

As per traditions, on Goddess Mahalaxmi’s order, servitors close the gate of the temple to prevent the entry of Lord Jagannath to the Srimandir in order to teach the Lord a lesson for not taking her along in his nine-day sojourn.

In the meantime, Lord Jagannath is taken to the ‘Bheta Mandap’ where he will meet the angry Goddess and offer her Rasagolas. It is believed that Lord Jagannath offers the sweet to appease Goddess Mahalaxmi and seeks her forgiveness.

After a long persuasion, the Goddess finally allows Mahaprabhu Jagannath to enter the Srimandir following which the Lord is escorted to the Ratna Singhasan.

Yesterday, the holy Trinity was offered ‘Adhara Pana’- a special drink made up of milk, banana, cheese, aromatic spices and water in earthen pitchers on their respective chariots.

The drink was offered after a ‘Sodosha Upachar Pooja’ following which the pitchers were smashed on the chariots spilling the entire drink on the floor of the chariots. It is believed that evil spirits who trail the Lords during Rath Yatra attain salvation (Mokshya) by drinking the spilled holy drink on the chariot decks.

As per the Rath Yatra protocol in compliance with the Supreme Court’s order on June 22, curfew was imposed in the pilgrim town on Friday to prevent public congregation in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

“We proved ourselves by organising Rath Yatra in a disciplined manner with all the restriction of coronavirus and I thank the residents of Puri. The temple will remain closed for public darshan till July 30. However, decision on reopening the temple for devotees will be taken after government provides the guidelines for the same after July 30,” added the district collector.

Bhubaneswar: After KALIA Yojana, Odisha government introduced Balaram Yojana in the state on Thursday that promises to provide bank loan up to Rs 50,000 to sharecroppers, landless farmers and to those who are left out of the farm credit coverage.

Odisha Agriculture Department Secretary, Sourav Garg today shared the details of the modalities through which the loans are to be disbursed.

As per Garg, the new scheme has been prepared in collaboration with NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) and tweaked to facilitate landless farmers who were earlier deprived of loans.

Under the Balaram scheme, the beneficiaries will be identified by Krushak Sathis appointed in each Gram Panchayats. Groups of four to five landless farmers will be constituted who will then be trained and educated by NABARD under its capacity building programme.

The maximum crop loan amount for a group has been set at Rs 1.5 Lakhs to Rs 2 Lakhs. “Until now, such a group was only allowed a loan of Rs 50,000 by cooperative banks that came down to only Rs 10,000 for each farmer, which was insufficient. With a loan up to Rs 50,000, I think the issues of the farmers can be addressed more broadly” said Garg.

Along with the cooperative banks, commercial banks have also been pooled in to provide loans to 60,000 to 70,000 groups (3 Lakh to 3.5 Lakh farmers) under the scheme this year.

“We have approximately 14,000 Krushak Sathis in 7,000 Gram Panchayats in the state and we expect each Krushak Sathis to identify four to five progressive farmers in their area who were deprived of farm loans till now. Similarly, each bank branch has been directed to provide loan to at least 10 farmer groups. That way, we can achieve our target,” he further added.

The interest rate and subsidy on the loan amount will be decided as per the State farm loan legislation, informed Garg.

Puri: A day after Suna Besha, the deities of Puri Srimandir- Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Jagannath were offered special drinks during the ‘Adhara Pana’ritual on Friday.

The Adhara Pana (special drink) is offered to the Holy Trinity to alleviate their tiredness after their sojourn to Gundicha temple and journey back to the Srimandir during the 9-day Rath Yatra. Though the ritual draws lakhs of devotees to the pilgrim town, this year it was observed without the presence of devotees in accordance to the Supreme Court order in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per servitors, the special drink is a concoction of various ingredients including cheese, sugar, banana, camphor, nuts and black pepper among others. Several herbal plant extracts including holy basil are also added.

The beverage is offered to the sibling deities in gigantic cylindrical earthen pots. Odia Mutt, Raghab Das Mutt and Srimandir administration arrange the ingredients required for preparation of the special drink. The water used to prepare the drink is collected by Pania Apat servitors from a well on the premises of Chhauni mutt near the Singhadwara.

After the Adhara Pana rituals, Niladri Bije, the return of the deities to Srimandir’s Ratna Singhasana, will be held tomorrow to mark the conclusion of the nearly two-week long festival.

Meanwhile, there will be no weekend shutdown this week in Puri, informed Collector Balwant Singh after the conduct of Adhara Pana ritual today.

Bhubaneswar: The COVID-19 graph in Odisha got even steeper after over 500 positive cases were reported in the last 24 hours. With 561 cases today, Odisha witnessed its highest single-day spike.

What is more surprising is the fact that there has also been a rise in COVID-19 infection within several important healthcare institutions in the State. As per official sources, as many as 77 new COVID-19 cases were reported from three major hospitals in the State.

Of the 77 COVID-19 cases, 55 have been reported from Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC), 11 from SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and 11 from the Pulmonary department of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

The 55 cases reported from AHRCC includes 18 patients, 36 attendants & one staff nurse.

Ruling out community spread, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) Commissioner Ananya Das informed that nearly 400 COVID-19 tests have been conducted in AHRCC in the last 3 days. “All the positive cases reported from AHRCC are from isolation ward and linked to one contact. All of them did not have any community interaction,” said Das.

Das further informed that when the first COVID-19 case was detected in AHRCC, a massive contact tracing was conducted.

“The entire isolation ward is being sanitised and all the patients who have tested negative for COVID-19 are being shifted to other places within the hospital premises,” said Das.

CMC Commissioner further stated that COVID-19 surveillance is being expanded to several vulnerable areas like Malgodown and Chhatrabazar apart from regular door-to-door screening in the city.

Bhubaneswar: Drawing lessons from current spike in COVID-19 cases majorly detected in two clusters – a hospital and an industrial unit, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday imposed restrictions on engagement of workers from outside the State till July 31.

While addressing a presser, BMC Commissioner, Prem Chandra Chaudhary informed that recently an industrial organisation had sourced workers from outside Odisha and all of them were put under quarantine. During testing, 34 of them had tested positive for COVID-19.

“In view of public safety and to contain the spread of COVID-19 virus, it is ordered that any business organisation like industrial, construction, hotels/hospitality, contractors (both government and private) shall not bring any workers/ labourers from outside the State to BMC jurisdiction till July 3, 2020,” said a BMC notification.

BMC Commissioner informed that all the industrial establishments and others have been asked to engage locally available workers/labourers. If any organisation has already brought workers from outside the state, they needs to put their workers under 14-day quarantine, he added.

“The business owners will have to conduct COVID-19 test of the workers at their own cost if anyone of them develops symptoms and inform the test result to BMC,” Chaudhary said.

BMC officials further advised industrial units to not bring workers from COVID-19 hotspot districts within Odisha like Ganjam, Gajapati, Balasore, Cuttack and Jajpur districts. The establishments should rather opt for workforce from non-hotspot districts till further orders, BMC officials said in a statement.

BMC also issued fresh advisory for hospitals in Bhubaneswar today for isolating patients coming to OPD from various hotspot districts.

“The hospitals should segregate patients coming from hotspot districts and keep all their details. If any persons have symptoms, they will be tested and if they have accommodation facility in Bhubaneswar where they can stay in isolation till declaration of COVID-19 test results. It will be the concerned hospital’s responsibility to contact the nodal officer of BMC and take them to institutional quarantine facility,” Chaudhary added.

It is pertinent to mention here that there has been a spurt in COVID-19 cases reported from Bhubaneswar in the past few days. Of the 26 new COVID-19 cases reported from Khurda district in the last 24 hours, 24 are from Bhubaneswar.

Puri: Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth in Puri, Swami Nishchalananda Saraswati has urged the government of India to remain amiable with Nepal amid the country’s escalating border row with the Himalayan country after it ‘unilaterally’ adopted a new national map including disputable regions of India.

“Nepal is a Hindu nation and shares social, cultural, religious and spiritual bond with India since time immemorial,” Shankaracharya said.

The Puri seer further highlighted that government must call for an all-party meet with various religious leaders having socio-cultural insights and resolve the tension between the countries through amicable deliberation.”

“Government must realise the tranquility and age-old cultural ties between the two nations,” he added.

It may be noted that Nepal shares a unique place in the history and tradition of Puri Jagannath Temple. As per the practice, the royal family of Nepal traditionally provides the ‘Kasturi’ (Deer Musk) used in temple rituals.

The king of Nepal and his queen enjoy special privileges at the Puri temple. As per the temple record of rights, the entire temple premises get washed – a ritual known as ‘soudha’, before the arrival of the Nepal royal couple.

In 2018, Nepal’s last king Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev paid a visit to the temple and offered obeisance before the holy trinity.

Amid long-term border issues, the ties between the South Asian neighbours have however gone for a toss in recent times. Last week, Nepal unilaterally passed a bill to alter its national map which includes disputed Indian territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura. The inclusion of the controversial provinces by means of parliamentary amendment triggered resentment in India especially at a time when the country’s is at loggerheads with China.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to include transgender community under its social welfare scheme- Madhu Babu Pension Yojana (MBPY).

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has approved a proposal in this regard, informed Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Minister Ashok Panda.

In order to avail the benefit, transgenders will have to visit the official website of MBPY and apply for the pension in the given form. Pension ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 900 will be provided to them in accordance with their age group.

“In its 2019 election manifesto, the BJD had promised to add transgender community under the Madhu Babu pension scheme. Now party supremo and CM Naveen have approved the proposal. Around 6000 transgenders will be benefited from the scheme across the State,” Panda said.

The minister further informed that the CM has also ordered to provide additional Rs 1000 Covid financial assistance to Madhu Babu pensioners.

“The funds have already been allocated and very soon the amount will be released. Around 48 lakh people of the State will be get the benefit, informed the SSEPD minister.

In view of Covid-19 situation, the State government had earlier paid four months pension in advance to the beneficiaries for the month of April, May, June and July.

“This Rs 1000 is an extra aid given to the beneficiaries under the scheme. After the July month ends, the CM will take decision regarding further advance payment of pension to the beneficiaries,” the minister added.

Welcoming the decision, Meera Parida, president of All Odisha Kinnar Mahasangh said, “It was our long-standing demand before the State government for inclusion under various pension schemes. I would like to thank CM Naveen Patnaik for fulfilling the promises he had made. It will certainly help our community to join the mainstream of society and lead a dignified life.”

Bhubaneswar: Following the standoff between India and China in Ladakh, voices to boycott Chinese products gained momentum in the country and subsequently Chinese tenders were scrapped and even joint-venture contracts were cancelled.

Now, all eyes are on the next move of the Centre as to whether it will curtail all Chinese investments in the country. If that happens, industry experts say that the development will have a detrimental impact on Odisha.

Chinese Investments In Odisha

In April, the single window clearance authority of Odisha had given green signal to three Chinese companies for investment of Rs 188 crore in the State.

A team under the State Industries Minister had also visited China in September last year and held a road show to attract Chinese investors.

Besides, the tender for the revival of Talcher Fertilisers Limited has also been bagged by a Chinese firm.

Amid the escalating border tension, now all these projects are staring at an uncertain future.

Expressing concerns, Financial analyst Rajiv Sahoo that the ongoing border dispute is not resolved amicably will definitely affect the projects which have been cleared through single window.

“If the state of affairs doesn’t improve, we can’t expect the investments to reach Odisha,” said Sahoo.

Chinese Import From Odisha

Apart from the investments, Odisha is one of the highest exporters of iron ore to China. Through Paradip and Gopalpur ports, iron ore worth around Rs 700 crore is exported to China every month.

If China denies importing iron ore, it will have an adverse effect on Odisha’s industrial sector, believe experts.

Export of iron ore to China still continues from the State and around 10 Chinese ships are likely to dock at Paradip port between July 1 and July 10 to import the raw material.

“If the tense situation continues to linger and impact the bilateral relation between the two economic powers, China may stop importing iron ore from us as a retaliatory measure,” said Prabodh Mohanty, general secretary of mines owners association (East).

Ban on import will further impact the State exchequer and lead to a huge plunge in foreign exchange to Odisha, said Mohanty.

Bhubaneswar: Senior Congress MLA and leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Narasingha Mishra has urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to take steps to convene Odisha Assembly session by the third week of August 2020.

In a letter to CM Naveen on Thursday, Mishra stated, “More than 7,000 people have been infected with Coronavirus and every day we find it is increasing alarmingly. No doubt in comparison to some States, our position is better, but at the same time some other states have performed better than us.”

Mishra further said that the State government has failed to provide medical facilities to large sections of people.

“Reports from Ganjam show that in rural areas, medicine shops are closed and as a result, people are not getting medicines while doctors are not available in primary and community health care centres. In Bhubaneswar, doctors are afraid of recording blood pressure of patients while in Bolangir some doctors are not visiting hospitals,” alleged Mishra.

Highlighting multiple issues that have cropped up due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he said, “Unemployment problem has become acute and the condition of migrated labourers is going bad to worse. Farmers are not able to sell their paddy because of petrol and diesel price hike and for other reasons.”

He further alleged that prices of essential commodities have increased and due to lack of transport facility, the movement of people has come to standstill.

“Democratic values have gone to the dustbin and constitutional rights have been curtailed. People’s Representatives are not being taken into confidence,” he claimed.

“It is, therefore, necessary to convene the Assembly session by the third week of August to discuss various problems of people and try to find out solutions jointly for the welfare of the State,” stated the Congress.

Puri: A day after witnessing the spectacular golden makeover (Suna Besha) of Bada Thakura Balabhadra, Mahaprabhu Jagannath, and Devi Subhadra, devotees will get a chance to see once-a-year spectacle of Adhara Pana offering to the Lords. Due to Covid pandemic restrictions, people will have to watch the event from home through live telecast.

Adhara Pana is a ritual of offering ‘pana’, a special drink prepared with milk, banana, cheese, aromatic spices and water. As per the practice, it is held atop three chariots of the deities-Nandighosha, Taladhwaja and  Devadalana- where they are seated after returning from Gundicha temple.

Odia Mutt, Raghab Das Mutt and Srimandir administration make arrangements for all the ingredients needed for preparation of the special drink.

The water used to prepare the drink is collected by Pania Apat servitors from a well on the premises of Chhauni mutt near the Singhadwara. It is then offered to the deities in their respective chariots in nine large cylindrical-shaped pitchers, three for each deity.

The one meter tall pitchers are placed in a manner that they touch the lips of the three siblings.

After the drink is offered to the deities, servitors break the earthen pitchers in order to spill the drink over the chariots.

It is believed that subsidiary deities (parswa deva devi) fitted in the outer parts of the chariots and evil spirits consume the holy drink to attain salvation.

After the Adhara Pana rituals, Niladri Bije, the return of the deities to Srimandir’s Ratna Singhasana, will be held tomorrow to mark the conclusion of the nearly two-week long festival.

“I am hopeful that the residents of Puri will continue same cooperation which they extended during Bahuda and Gundicha Yatra so that Adhara Pana and Niladri Bije rituals can be conducted smoothly,” said SJTA chief administrator Krishan Kumar.

A thick blanket of security was in place in Puri for the Suna Besha ritual of the presiding deities of Srimandir- Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath. Nearly, 60 platoons of police force were deployed for the smooth conduct of the festival. Additional one platoon was engaged for escorting and guarding the ornaments of the deities, informed Puri SP, Uma Shankar Dash.
