Mumbai: The BSE benchmark Sensex declined by over 28 points in opening trade today on fresh selling by funds and retail investors, taking cues from weak global markets.

The 30-share barometer, which gained 513.19 points in the previous session, fell by 28.58 points to 18,212.40 points in the first few minutes of trade today.

Stocks of realty, IT and metal companies remained under pressure.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index slid by 37 points to 5,434.25.

Market experts said the trading sentiment turned bearish amid a weak trend on other Asian bourses following losses in the US market in Friday`s trade.

In the Asian region, Hong Kong`s Hang Seng index was trading 0.73 per cent lower and Japan`s Nikkei shed 0.86 per cent this morning. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.96 per cent lower in Friday trade.
