Mumbai: Erasing initial gains, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index Sensex was down by over 80 points to 16,760.33 at 1015 hours today as funds and retail investors booked profits in heavy-weighted stocks.

The Sensex, which had gained 76.01 points in opening trade, fell by 80.47 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 16,760.33 at 1015 hours after stocks of technology, banking, auto and capital goods companies succumbed to profit-booking.

Similarly, the broad-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index fell by 39.25 points, or 0.77 per cent, to 5,017.35, after opening in positive zone.

Stock brokers said profit-booking by market participants amid fears that the Reserve Bank of India might raise interest rates to check inflation led to a decline in stock prices in late morning trade.
