Mumbai: Samvat 2073, marking the start of the Hindu New Year, began on a positive note for Indian equities at a special trading session held on Sunday.

Held every year on Diwali day, the special trading session saw both the bellwether indices of the Indian equities markets make initial gains.

The 51-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) made gains during the period under review. It was higher by 23 points or 0.27 per cent at 8,661 points.

Similarly, the 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) augmented during the initial trading period.

The S&P BSE Sensex, which opened at 28,066.32 points, was trading at 28,039.14 points (at 6.30 p.m.) -- up 97.63 points or 0.35 per cent from the previous day's close at 27,941.51 points.

The Sensex has so far touched a high of 28,095.71 points and a low of 28,037.15 points during the intra-session trade.

In Samvat 2072, the barometer index gained 2,074.56 points or 8.02 per cent, whereas the NSE Nifty swelled by 813 points or 10.38 per cent.
