Mumbai: The Indian rupee strengthened by 2 paise to Rs 44.41 per dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange on Friday, supported by a higher opening in the stock market and dollar weakness against other major currencies overseas.

The rupee had closed flat at Rs 44.43/44 per dollar in the previous session.

Forex dealers said dollar weakness against major currencies overseas and a higher opening in the stock market mainly kept the rupee sentiment firm.

Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex surged by 64.48 points, or 0.33 per cent, to 19,356.50 in opening trade today.
