Mumbai: The Indian rupee appreciated by 5 paise to Rs 44.64 per US dollar in opening trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, supported by a higher opening in the stock market.

The rupee had appreciated by 17 paise to close at nearly a four-week high of Rs 44.69/70 against the American currency in the previous session on the back of firm local equities.

Forex dealers said the higher opening in the stock market mainly helped the rupee to trade higher against the US dollar in early trade.

Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex was up by 185.51 points at 19,031.38 in opening trade today.
