Mumbai: The Indian rupee lost 4 paise to Rs 44.11 per US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, weighed down by dollar gains against other Asian currencies overseas and a weak trend in the stock market.

Forex dealers said strengthening of the dollar against other Asian currencies and a lower opening in the stock market amid month-end dollar demand from importers mainly put pressure on the rupee.

The rupee settled just 1 paise higher at Rs 44.07/08 against the US dollar in yesterday`s see-saw session on alternate bouts of buying and selling.

Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell by 75.10 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 18,134.42 in opening trade today.
