Mumbai: The Indian rupee weakened by 8 paise to Rs 44.56 against the US dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange today, in line with weakness in other Asian currencies overseas.

The rupee closed 4 paise higher in the previous session at Rs 44.47/48 against the US currency on mild dollar selling by exporters.

Forex dealers said weakness in other Asian currencies against the dollar overseas mainly put pressure on the rupee sentiment, but a higher opening in the stock market capped the losses.

Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex recovered by 51 points to 18,520.36 this morning.
