Ranchi: Jharkhand government has planned to set up "Silk Parks" to boost silk industry and improve the economic condition of silk cultivators.
With an aim to popularise the foreign currency-generated industry at international markets, the proposed parks would come up at North and South Chhotanagpur regions, according to official sources here.
The parks would encourage tribals and other cultivators to take up silk business seriously and boost their economy - from the present income from Rs 25,000/30,000 to Rs 40,000/50,000 per produce.
As sericulture has a potential to increase the economic condition of the cultivators, the government would increase mulberry leaves, a favourite feed of silkworms, in this financial year, sources said.
Setting a target to achieve 1500 metric tonne raw silk production in the coming years, they said the government would embark upon schemes pertaining to pre- and post-cocoon stages this year.
Jharkhand, which is one of the leading silk producers in the country, has proposed to train at least one lakh villagers to help grow the silk cultivation further.
