New Delhi: India`s steel production remained flat at 5.876 million tonne (MT) in May, while global production rose by 4.2 per cent during the month, according to the World Steel Association (WSA).

India had produced 5.860 MT steel in May 2010.

"World crude steel production for 64 countries reporting to WSA was 130 MT in May 2011. This is 4.2 per cent higher than in May 2010," WSA said in a statement.

Among the world`s largest industry associations, WSA members produce around 85 per cent of global steel output.

China`s crude steel production for May 2011 was 60.2 MT, up 7.8 per cent compared to May 2010. Japan produced 9 MT, down by 7 per cent than that in the same month last year.

South Korea produced 5.9 MT crude steel in May 2011, 12.8 per cent more than in May 2010.
