New Delhi: With indiscriminate use of antibiotics leading to cases of microbial resistance and consequent health hazards, government on Tuesday said it proposed to amend the Drugs and Cosmetic Rules soon to put a check on this practice.

Replying to a written question on control of rampant use of antibiotics, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said the proposed amendments in the rules will help introduce a new Schedule containing antibiotics and certain anti-TB drugs and habit-forming drugs to ensure the label of these drugs contains a warning in a conspicuous place.

The Minister said the warning will state that it is dangerous to take such drugs except in accordance with medical advice, apart from the fact that such drugs continued to be prescription drugs.

Indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led to cases of resistance of such drugs and the medical fraternity has expressed concern all over the world over such resistance.
