Speculations over BJD’s equidistance police after decision to support NDA

Is there any pressure on the BJD or Naveen Patnaik is leaning towards the NDA? Such speculations are now rife after BJD cleared its stance after the YSR Congress’ support to the NDA. Apart from this, it is being discussed whether the ruling BJD is changing its ‘equidistance policy’?

Speculation over BJD's support to BJP

Soon after the ruling, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) announced to extend support to the NDA-led government at the Centre by opposing the no-confidence motion brought by the Opposition, speculations are now rife in Odisha over such a stance of the ruling party.

BJD MP Sasmit Patra today informed that his party will oppose the no-confidence motion proposed by various opposition parties against the BJP-led government at the centre. Patra further informed that the BJD will also support the passing of the Delhi services ordinance.

The BJD has also issued a three-line whip to both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs to be present in the house and do the needful.

BJD MP Pinaki Mishra said, “BJD feels that it is a pointless exercise and therefore we are not in a position to needlessly support a no-confidence motion which has no value today. Meanwhile, we will not oppose the Delhi Bill.”

BJP MP Suresh Pujari said, “We had urged everybody in the House to support the Bill. In the last 9 years, the Centre has opened its treasury for the development of Odisha by sanctioning funds. Hence how can BJD support the no-confidence motion.”

Following such an announcement, politics is now active in Odisha. The Congress alleged that both the BJD and BJP are one.

“We always have been telling that both BJD and BJP are one. There could be some issues for which BJD is in a state of panic and announced to extend support to the Bill by issuing a three-line whip. We will go to the people and expose BJD’s double-faced policy,” said Congress MP, Saptagiri Ulaka.

It is not the first time that the BJD has extended support to the NDA in the passage of any Bill in the Parliament. At times the party has extended indirect support by skipping the debates and openly supporting the Centre on other occasions.

But the question remains why the BJD issued a whip and announced direct support ahead of the crucial general elections? Whether there is any pressure on the BJD or there is any other reason? Is BJD inclining towards the NDA or whether there would be any coalition between the BJD and BJP in future?

All such questions are now being discussed by a majority of people in the state.

“Instead of misleading people, it would have been appropriate if the BJD and BJP again enter into an alliance formally. For the upcoming election, both parties will indulge in mudslinging but it will be just eyewash,” said senior journalist, Sandip Sahu.

"Congress in Orissa is no more an expensive commodity. BJD-BJP will henceforth surely work openly together and we shall have the glorious period of Kalinga returned to us. It will be honey and sugar all the way till another Regional party is born," tweeted former BJD MP, Tathagata Satpathy.
