Cairo: Egypt`s former first lady Suzanne Thabet Mubarak was hospitalised in unstable condition after suffering a heart attack following a remand in custody in connection with a probe into her assets.

The wife of ousted president Hosni Mubarak was hospitalised with severe chest pains after authorities came to arrest her, Al Arabiya reported.

The 70-year-old former first lady was questioned on Thursday by Egyptian investigators looking into allegations of illegal acquisition of wealth.

She was questioned for the first time by the Illicit Gains Authority and sent to custody for 15 days in connection with charges that she abused her position to make illicit monetary gains.

Suzanne was then taken to a military hospital from her home in the resort town of Sharm-el Sheikh after she complained of severe chest pains.

The hospital director today said that she was in unstable condition.

Mubarak, who is also in custody, is believed to be at the same hospital, it said.

The channel quoted an official as saying that the Mubaraks would be shifted to a prison in Cairo once they are fit for it.

The husband and wife were earlier questioned for three hours in Sharm-el Sheikh by officials of the agency that functions under the Justice Ministry.

The 83-year-old Mubarak was first detained on April 13 and has been interrogated by state prosecutors on several charges, including ordering security forces to shoot at peaceful protesters during an uprising against him.

Mubarak`s two sons -- Alaa and Gamal -- are also in custody over allegations of making illicit gains and were questioned last month. Their wives Heidi Rasekh and Khadiga al-Gammal were also questioned in the investigation into the Mubarak family`s wealth.

Mubarak was ousted in February after an uprising against his regime engulfed the entire country.

Since then investigations have been opened against him and his family.
