Kiev: At least 14 people on a fishing trip died when their boat capsized in the Black Sea near Ukraine's southern port city of Odessa, authorities said on Sunday.

According to the State Emergency Service, 22 people were rescued from the vessel which was believed to be carrying 36 people at the time of the accident that took place on Saturday, Xinhua reported.

Earlier in the day, Odessa regional authorities said that the boat with 33 passengers and three crew members onboard capsized at about 3.30 p.m. on Saturday about one km from the shore, after being caught in a thunderstorm.

Preliminary investigation showed that the boat was overloaded at the time of the sinking and its passengers were not wearing life jackets.

Further investigation was underway to find out what caused the vessel to capsize.
