A contrite Will Smith has opened up about the controversy surrounding his assault of Chris Rock at this year's Academy Awards, offering his most unvarnished thoughts about an altercation that has marred his public image, despite being named Best Actor, reports 'Variety'.

'The Pursuit of Happyness' actor hit the headlines because of the incident at the Oscars where he assaulted comedian Chris Rock after the latter made fun of Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith's bald head.

Smith assaulted Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head.

Smith apologised again to Rubin and Hudson for his action, expressed his awareness that there would be consequences and tried to explain why he snapped when Rock made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's hair

Pinkett Smith announced last year that she had shaved her head after struggling with alopecia. After Rock made his 'G.I. Jane' joke, she was seen not laughing and rolling her eyes.

The uncensored footage of the show had Rock saying, "Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me," as Smith was on his way to his chair. "Wow, dude. It was a G.I. Jane joke."

A teary eyed Smith kissed his wife Jada Pinkett Smith before going on the stage and then made an emotional speech.
