Jaishankar said those who politicise the UNSC 1267 Sanctions regime, sometimes even to the extent of defending proclaimed terrorists, do so at their own peril.
"Politics should never ever provide cover to evade accountability. Nor indeed to facilitate impunity," he said when the Security Council met on impunity for the crimes in Ukraine.
Washington has long expressed backing for India's quest for a permanent seat through different administrations.
Along with India, Brazil, Germany and Japan form the group known as G4, which advocates for reforming the Council and mutually support their candidacies for permanent seats in an expanded Council.
India's concerns about terrorist threats from Afghanistan were widely shared by participants at the Council meeting held on the eve of the anniversary of the US withdrawal from the country.
India has suffered the scourge of cross border terrorism for decades losing thousands of lives, India's MoS for External Affairs said.
Tirumurti also warned about the cross-border terrorism by governments "leveraging their expertise in digital domain to achieve their political and security-related objectives" to target "critical national infrastructure, including health and energy facilities".
The attacks followed several other recent attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, including in religious minority communities, across Afghanistan during the month of Ramadan.
While reiterating India's call for a complete reform of the Council, Deputy Permanent Representative R. Ravindra said the resolution was a "flawed approach (that) is, therefore, an aberration" that cannot address the totality of the problems with the Council's role and powers.

In the Explanation of Vote, Thomas-Greenfield said it really is "unconscionable" that Russia would have the audacity to put forward a resolution asking the international community to solve a humanitarian crisis that Russia alone created.
Russia has said that Kiev's idea to put peace deal terms up for a referendum will only hurt the ongoing talks.
Welcoming the latest round of diplomatic talks between Russia and Ukraine, he said India believes that immediate cessation of hostilities and diligently pursuing the path of dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward in achieving peace in the region.
