The first phase of the quadrennial tiger census is being conducted in 55 beats under the Karanjia Forest Division. Similarly, 70 beats of the north wildlife division under the supervision of Deputy Director Similipal Tiger Reserve, Sai Kiran will also see the tiger census.
Just as a tiger is considered an indicator of a good forest, river dolphins are indicator of a healthy river and act as an umbrella species of the river ecosystem. There are currently two species of the river dolphins inhabiting India, Ganges River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica) and the Indus River Dolphin (Platanista minor).
The headcount of tigers and elephants will be conducted together for the first time from next year (2022), Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Odisha, Shashi Paul informed on Thursday.
The census will take place in 20 forests across the State this year. As many as 15 forests were covered during the last census in 2018.
