The State’s Higher Education Minister Ananta Das said, “As campus poll fever is already setting in across colleges and university premises, display of the Prime Minister’s speech cannot be allowed. Besides, the government is wondering why Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya got priority over Swami Vivekananda.”
Expressing similar views Opposition leader Narasingha Mishra said, “I completely agree with the State government as far as this issue is concerned. No educational institution should be forced to listen to a particular political party’s leader.”
Meanwhile, BJP cried foul following the State government’s decision and said the ruling party is playing dirty politics over the whole episode.
BJP spokesperson Golak Mohapatra said, “The State took the decision to serve its political interests,” adding that campus polls are not being held at all educational institutions in the State.

“Buddha or Christ didn’t determine a country’s fate. It’s the common people who could decide what the fate would be like,” Monk Narendra often harped on this in his every speech.
Simply put, Vivekananda firmly believed in truly making ' Mera Bharat Mahan' – a popular slogan that rents the country’s air on every Independence and Republic Days.Stickers with this slogan do a brisk business during those days of national importance.
As the pandemic has clouded the growth horizons of the country and the world alike, the time is ripe to discover Vivekananda in every soul. And this can only make ‘Mera Bharat Mahan’, feel intellectuals here.
What Swami Vivekananda said is not a mere idealism, the year of Covid19 had evidenced it. It’s the steely resolve of the common masses, even after goingthrough all travails and tragedies during the lockdown time, that had infused the potential in the country to contain the rampaging epidemic.
It’s monk Narendra who first gave the clarion call of ‘New India' aeons ago – in the 19th century. We are in the 21st century now, and PM Narendra Modi had now built a campaign around accomplishing ‘New India’.
What Is New India?
As per late Swami Lokeswarananda, Vivekananda’s 'New India’ is not the cities of dreamland – sky scrapers, imported cars, disneyland parks and all other extravaganzas.
Rather, he said, Swamiji’s New India is a nation where there is food for every mouth, roof over every head and work at every hand.
What Is Vivekananda Model?
When the country and state is witnessing a cacophony over the supremacy claims of umpteen models – Rahul Model, Gujarat Model and Naveen Patnaik Model, time to rewind to Vivekananda Model.
As per late Swami Lokeswarananda, the cardinal pillar of Vivekananda Model is ‘Character building through education’.
Character Education -The Revolutionary Smart Chip!
The 2Cs have wreaked havoc in India. Corruption and crime are taking a big toll on India or say Odisha’s growth story.
Be it UP’s Badaun or Odisha' s Nayagarh, the incidents of crime against women have a very nauseating impact on society. Similar déjà vu moments also were: from Mining to Pathak scam in Odisha.
Other skeletons: Kashipur to Nagada Malnutrition et al.
According to Swami Atmaprabhananda, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission, Odisha, the character building chip in Indian Education system would have scripted stories of miràcle for the society. Because, character will banish the human vices, he claimed.
“Vivekananda believed that character inclusive education is the foundation stone and science & technology are the pillars of progress. A strong foundation and resilient pillars can only build the New India or New Odisha,” opined Swami Atmaprabhananda.
In order to make our Bharat Mahan, the moment is apt to put into practice ‘Vivekananda Model’ – tried and tested at Chicago World Religions Conference in 1893.
Gifted musician
Vivekananda, who is best known as a monk to modernise Hinduism and took Vedanta to the West, was a gifted singer and proficient musician. He could flawlessly play flute, sitar, esraj and sarangi. Almost all the bhajans and songs on his master (Guru) Ramakrishna Paramahamsa are written and sung by him.
His father Vishwanath Datta, who was a trained classical musician, taught him the rudiments of Dhrupad. Mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi familiarised him with traditional devotional music. He was fortunate enough to be tutored by two well-known musicians of his time-Ahmad Khan and Beni Gupta.
He was agile enough to grasp the intricacies of Indian classical music and instruments under their tutelage though it normally takes a life time to master those. Vivekananda learnt to play the Pakhawaj from Murari Gupta. He was an accomplished singer in Dhrupad before he turned twenty. He participated in several concerts in Kolkata. He also authored a book on Indian and Bengali music titled Sangeeta Kalpataru. He had a beautiful voice which he used to enrapture the audience.
Food fetish
Many people don’t know Vivekananda’s love for food, cooking and his passion for tea. Interestingly, Vivekananda was not a vegetarian and consumed fish and mutton. This is not very shocking as he was a Bengali and came from the Kayastha community, which consumes non-vegetarian food. He also bought many books on French cooking and developed new dishes, one of them being a Khichdi cooked with eggs, peas and potatoes. As a child, he loved eating Kachori Sabzi which used to be sold near his house. He was very fond of ice cream. He loved to relish on fried potatoes which he used to cook with butter and curry powder. When Vivekananda travelled abroad, he developed a particular liking for different teas.
Marks are not soul of one’s talent
When it came to academics, Narendra Nath Datta (Swamiji’s pre-monastic name) reminded the adage that marks are not the soul of one’s talent. He wasn’t great at scoring marks. He took three university examinations - the entrance examination, the First Arts Standard (FA), which later became Intermediate Arts or IA and the Bachelor of Arts (BA). His scores in the English language were 47 % at the entrance level, 46 % in FA and 56 % in BA.
31 ailments
In a life-span of only 39 years, Swami Vivekananda battled several health problems including no less than 31 ailments. Insomnia, liver and kidney diseases, malaria, migraine, diabetes and heart ailments were among some of the 31 health problems that Swamiji suffered in the course of his life. One of the perennial problems that Vivekananda lived with was chronic insomnia. It is also known that Vivekananda used to suffer from diabetes like his father. However, at that time suitable drugs were unavailable. His abdominal pains were also a source of great anxiety for Swamiji.
Court conundrum
After the death of Swami Vivekananda’s paternal uncle Taraknath, his wife Gyanadasundari ousted Vivekananda’s family from their ancestral house and filed a suit in the court. Swamiji fought the case for fourteen years. Then he decided to put an end to the court case in 1902 after paying some financial compensation.
What Is Religion?
“Religion deals with the truths of metaphysical world just as chemistry, biology and physics deal with the physical natural world ( means that one can see, feel and taste). The book one must read to learn Chemistry is the book of nature; whereas the book you need to learn Religion is your own Heart and Mind,” Explained the Monk Narendra.
Simplifying it further, Swami Vivekananda said, “Personal purity is Dharma.”
As per Swami Atmaprabhananda, doing a duty with a ‘pure' mind and heart is akin to worshipping the universal god. Pure affection for your duty and mankind is the only Dharma.
These valuable interpretations will evaporate the smokescreen created with regards to secularism and Religion.
Moreover, when the country and State are saddled with societal mutations in the realms ranging from teen syndromes, professional pressures to relationship blues, the sagacious ponderings of the Monk Narendra shows the way.
Consider The Sample Lessons
On Future Religion: Advaita will be the future religion of thinking Indians. And it is the only way to save India from materialism.
On Relationship:Relationships are more important than life. But it is important for those relationships to have life in them.
On Love: Love can never be the means.. It must be the perfect end. If someone says to you, “ I love you for such and such thing,” s/he doesn’t love you.
For which, Swami Vivekananda had said Love leads one to heaven and lust to hell.
On Success: Take up one idea, make that one idea your life. Think of it, dream of it. Live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.
*The great secret of true success, of true happiness, is this: the man or woman who asks for no return, the perfectly unselfish person, is the most successful.
On Problems: In a day, when you don’t come across any problems –you can be sure that you are travelling on a wrong path.
