After being hiked for five consecutive days, petrol and diesel prices remained steady across the country on Thursday.
Till last Tuesday, fuel prices were steady since November 2021 when the Centre reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 per litre, respectively.
If such a price rise of fuel continues, the price of several other essential commodities will most likely mount. This will again add up to the woes already inflicting on the monthly budget of lower and middle-class families.
With the latest price revision, petrol is now being sold at Rs 115.53/ litre while diesel prices have reached Rs 100.23/ litre in Bhubaneswar.
The OMCs revise the transportation fuel cost based on various factors such as rupee to US dollar exchange rate, cost of crude oil and demand of fuel amongst others.
A record 137-day hiatus in rate revision ended on March 22 with an 80 paise per litre increase in rates and similar proportion hikes have followed in subsequent days.
In 2020-21, the domestic production of edible oils stood at 111.51 lakh tonnes, while imports were recorded at 134.52 lakh tonnes and demand was for 246.03 lakh tonnes.

Prices also remained static on Sunday in Kolkata where the price of petrol was reduced by Rs 5.82 to Rs 104.67 per litre and that of diesel by Rs 11.77 to Rs 89.79 per litre on the previous day.
The fuel prices have now increased on a fifth consecutive day. Before this after holding for a couple of days, fuel prices again has risen on the previous five days by about 35 paise per litre.
The Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) and Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) will hold demonstrations outside petrol pumps in all 147 assembly constituencies.
It remained static again on Monday and Tuesday before rising again on Wednesday.
