Biden said it was the closest the world had come to nuclear catastrophe for 60 years.

Biden gave an interview to CBS News anchor Scott Pelley at the White House which will be aired on Sunday. Biden's reaction came soon after Pelley asked what the consequences would be if Putin crossed the line.

The Russian authorities have already made all the necessary decisions to prepare for such a response, he added.

Russia's starting position is that atomic war should be unacceptable and Moscow successfully persuaded the US and other nuclear powers to agree on that back in January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov outlined in an interview.
