Important dates for IBPS PO 2017 (Tentative)
Note: The aspiring candidates can check detailed notification on the official website of IBPS www.ibps.in and are advised to regularly keep in touch with the website for any latest updates.
As per the data available with the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), the number of applicants for jobs in the banking and financial sector, especially the public sector, in the country has dropped drastically to a mere 50 lakh (for both the officer and clerical level) from a high of 145 lakh in the previous year (2019-20). The lowest ever applicants in the last decade had been 101 lakh in the years of 2013-14 and 2018-19.
According to the IBPS, which conducts the all-India competitive exams for posts at various levels in the public sector banks, since recruitments have only started from September 2020, the financial year ended on March 2021, witnessed the lowest ever applicants in history.
The interpretation is given that few vacancies were on offer in the year 2020-21, the applicants for the coveted jobs in the public sector banks witnessed a historic drop.
Consider the following.
As per the data available with IBPS, the year 2020-21 saw employment notifications for the vacancies in public sector banks down by a whopping 82 per cent. The job vacancies (officers + clerical) announced by public sector banks in 2019-20 were 16,411, whereas the job offers in the pandemic year had been mere 2,974.
However, data with SBI tells a different tale. The job vacancies SBI group notified in the pandemic year has been around 10,134 vis-a-vis 10,904 in 2019-20. The drop in vacancies in the SBI group has not been substantial.
The comparative data analysis reveals that due to a sharp fall (over 80%) in job vacancies in Indian public sector banks, except the SBI group, the applicants' count had correspondingly dropped by over 65 per cent.
However, in the current year of 2021-22, the total clerical vacancies announced by public sector banks stood at over 7300, which is still far below the average of 12,075 in the year 2019-20.
But the number of job vacancies notified by the SBI group for the post of clerks in the year 2021-22 stood lower at 4,900.
The IBPS has not released the data of registrations by the job applicants for the vacancies in the PS banks for the ongoing year 2021-22.
Odisha Scenario
The State has 5,480 branches of public sector banks, as per the RBI data. The employee strength in the State stood at over 40,000.
The banking job aspirants in the State had a very tiring time in the pandemic year as mere 289 clerical vacancies were on offer in the year 2021. The total clerical vacancies in public sector banks in the country stood at over 7000.
In 2021, the SBI group has announced over 4900 vacancies at the clerical level, and the total vacancies for Odisha stood at a mere 75. The prelims exam for all the registered candidates will be conducted on July 10, 11, 12 and 13, 2021.
ASO exam was earlier scheduled to be held on December 23, 2018 but it was later postponed to January 20, 2019. In a release, OPSC had said that due to receipt of very large number of applications and consequent imperative need to re-adjust and re-allocate candidates at different centres, the Commission has decided to postpone the exam.
However, as the exam's rescheduled date will clash with other important exams, students have upped the ante against the authorities and demanded to postpone the exam again.
"After years of preparation and hard work, we have cleared the Railway ALP and IBPS Clerk prelim exams and we are set to appear for the exams on January 20. We also want to appear for the ASO exam; so, we approached the concerned authorities twice to postpone the ASO exam as students are now in a difficult situation to choose one out of the three exams. It's injustice to all our hard works," lamented
a protesting candidate.
Another student said that the ASO exam must be conducted online to bring transparency in the selection of ASOs. "We demand Online exam of ASO and also postponement of the exam as no student can appear for three exams in a day," lamented the ASO aspirant.
However, the OPSC authorities could not be contacted to comment on the allegations and students' concerns.
The Commission had earlier in September released the official notification inviting applications from interested and eligible candidates for ASO in Group B of Odisha Secretariat Service under Home Department for a total of 500 posts.

“This is not the first time that such clash of dates has taken place; we often face such situation where our future and ambitions go for a toss. It will be difficult to decide whether to give a miss to the NET or the RRB main,” he added.
The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is expected to declare the result of online preliminary examination for recruitment of scale I officers in RRBs in October 2017. And the main examination will be held on November 5, 2017.
Similarly, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) for post graduate students for lectureship on November 5.

“We can’t miss a main exam but giving a miss to UGC NET is also difficult. However, we are left with no choice. We have spent Rs 1000 as fee to apply NET. Money is not all we are worried about but it’s certainly something for students who get around Rs 3000 to Rs 4000 per months from parents and also for all those who take tuitions and do part time jobs to fund their own study,” said another aspirant who has already cleared the main exam and interview for ASM in Indian Railways, Dhiraj Sahu.
All these dates are tentative. Hope the exam conducting authorities will consider problems of the students as both the exams are important,” said a faculty of a private coaching centre here.
“CBSE did not conduct the NET exam in July and pushed it for November 5. Earlier, students were at least able to attend the exam twice annually but this year they will get only one chance and, adding to the woes, if some of them can’t attend due to the date issue, it will be really unfortunate,” he added.

The success is not in the count of seats alone. Job numbers are also very impressive.
As per the data available with STPI (Bhubaneswar), as many as 1,550 jobs have been generated in the rural BPOs in Odisha under the India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS) till the end of March 2019. The State finishes fifth largest employment creator nationally under the IBPS scheme, claimed a senior STPI official.
"The job creation depends on number of entities joining the scheme. With good incentives on offer for pooling in more BPO/ITES firms, 600 more are joining the scheme soon," the official informed and added that as of now the 18 units have come up in five locations of the State like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Jaleswar and Sambalpur.
However, a look at the data shows Bhubaneswar houses as many as 13 units having a seat capacity of 1,378. Only 28 per cent seats are available in the other 4 locations. Puri has the least number of seats (54). Also, despite STPI centres, Berhampur and Rourkela are yet to see any bidder.
It needs reminding here that as per the guidelines of IBPS, a bidder has to bid for a minimum of 100 seats and a maximum of 5000 seats either at one location (city/State) or at multiple locations (city/state) across the country. But the minimum benchmark to start operation at a location is fixed at 50 seats.
“Bhubaneswar grabs the lion's share in BPO units because, it has good infrastructure, high-speed broadband connectivity and availability of skilled manpower with low attrition rate," the official explained.
Significant mention here is Odisha government has to take a leaf out of the Andhra Pradesh model of boosting BPO/ITES services. Proactive BPO/ITES policy and infra saw AP creating a high of 11, 223 seats. In terms of BPO jobs, the number count stood high at 6,520.
Odisha government has only this February released its draft BPO policy -2019. With the incentive of Rs 1.05 lakh capital subsidy to firms selecting area of operation in Bhubaneswar and Rs 1.15 lakhs for units in 22 other districts except Naxal-affected districts, the State government is aiming to generate 30,000 jobs in urban areas by 2022.

There is also a plan to gradually expand the CET's scope to other languages of the 8th schedule, officials privy to the developments in the Ministry of Personnel said.
There are 22 languages in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. As per the information, the CET exams will initially begin with 12 languages and then include other languages as part of its examination process.
States and Union Territories (UTs) can avail the Common Eligibility Test to be conducted by the National Recruitment Agency (NRA) for job selection, the decision for which was passed at the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
There is also a plan that the CET score would be shared with the recruiting agencies with the state governments and UT administrations as well as Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and also later on with the private sector. The Ministry of Personnel also confirmed it in a statement on Saturday.
Citing Union Minister Jitendra Singh's statement on the issue, the Ministry said "CET would actually help the recruiting agencies including the state and UT governments to save the cost and time spent on recruitment, while at the same time also be convenient and cost-effective for the young job aspirants."
As part of government's plan, an arrangement in the form of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) could be put in place for using the CET score by these agencies and these organisations. Eventually, the Ministry said that CET could prove a win-win arrangement both for the employer as well as employee.
Related Story: Govt To Set Up National Recruitment Agency To Conduct Common Eligibility Test
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) and Minister Jitendra Singh are in touch with several state governments and UTs that have expressed their inclination to be a part of the sharing arrangement of CET score.
It is learnt that most of the Chief Ministers are also quite enthusiastic and in favour of adopting this reform, which the Central government calls a revolutionary decision as this is aimed at proving to be a major reform to bring about ease of living for struggling youth and job aspirants.
The government has planned to give relaxation in the upper age limit to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Class (OBC) and other category candidates as per existing government policy who will be appearing for the exams. "The CET will have no correlation or incompatibility with the rules of recruitment like domicile followed by certain states or UTs," the Minister has added.
To streamline the recruitment process in India, the Union Cabinet approved setting up of the National Recruitment Agency. The new agency will conduct a Common Eligibility Test (CET) to select candidates for non-gazetted posts in the central government and public sector banks.
The agency will conduct a common entrance test for SSC and the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and Railway Recruitment Board (RRB).
For forming the National Recruitment Agency, the central government sanctioned Rs 1,517.57 crore. The aim of CET is to eliminate multiple tests and save precious time as well as resources.
