As many as three teams comprising four to five forest officials, ornithologists, wildlife experts each have been deployed in the census in five ranges of the national park.

Experts have raised eyebrows over the official bird census saying the real bird count statistics tell a different story than the figures reflected on paper. They have also questioned the non-inclusion of local public and bird experts during the enumeration exercise apart from blaming the rampant activities of illegal prawn culture as reason behind the drop in the bird count. 

This year’s rise has been seen in the backdrop of the bird census conducted in the areas which included Sukhasoda (38 square kilometres) on the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border, for the first time.

The seasonal bird census at the famous Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapada district began today (Aug 23). The bird census will reportedly continue for seven days for which two teams have been set up.
