Two alleged activists of the banned Al Qaeda in Indian Sub- continent, arrested from West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, had major plans for expanding sleeper cells in the state, especially in the minority-dominated pockets in its north region, officials said on Friday.
Al Qaeda also put him on its hit list along with several literary and media figures it claimed insulted Islam.
Al-Zawahiri had overseen the September 11 attacks on the US in 2001 -- that killed 2,977 people -- along with Osama bin-Laden, who was killed by the US in 2011 in Pakistan.
The chilling threat issued by AQIS has alerted the security agencies in the country.
The Taliban takeover has made it more likely that Mohammed Salahaldin Abd El Halim Zidane, (alias Sayf-Al Adl), in the event that he succeeds al-Zawahiri, will have the option of establishing himself in Afghanistan to take up his new role, although one Member State has denied his presence in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The group has strengthened its positions in and around Kabul, where it conducts most of its attacks, targeting minorities, activists, government employees and personnel of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.
