Bhubaneswar/New York: World number 1 tennis player Rafael Nadal beat Kevin Anderson at the US Open to clinch his second grand slam of the year and 16th of his career.

Nadal, whose resurgence after repeated periods of injury laybacks defied all odds to claim the title by beating Anderson of South Africa, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, on Sunday.

The win was Nadal’s third U.S. Open championship and his first since 2013. It was also his first title in a hardcourt tournament since January 2014.

The charismatic 31-year-old Spaniard had earlier won an unprecedented 10th French Open in June and has now claimed the US Open this year after emerging from injuries at the highest level. He returned back to the top of standings last month.
