Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Tara Chand has directed officers of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) to clean weed from inner and deeper portions of the Dal Lake, which is the heart of Kashmir`s tourism industry.

Chand, who toured the lake yesterday to take stock of its cleaning operation, was informed that five new machines- imported from US and Switzerland- along with old ones have been put into service to clean unwanted weed in the Lake, an official spokesman said.

The deputy chief minister was informed that augmentation of the machines has become necessary because of the magnitude of the weed, the spokesman said. He said the minister instructed the LAWDA officers to undertake cleaning of weed from inner and deeper portions of the lake.

While reviewing the re-location of lake dwellers, Chand asked officers to pay land and structure compensation to the affected families to make their rehabilitation easy. The Dal Lake, located less than 2 KM from the city centre, is a major tourist attraction.
