Kalinganagar: To support the education of underprivileged Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students, Tribal Cultural Society (TCS), a society promoted by Tata Steel, awarded Jyoti Fellowship to meritorious students of Kalinganagar on February 10, 2016.

352 students from different schools and colleges located in Kalinganagar area received the fellowship in a function organized at Danagadi Bhawan.

Sukinda BJD MLA Pritiranjan Ghadai, Lalita Ray, chairperson, Danagadi Block, Prasanta Mallick, GM (Corporate Services), Kalinganagar Steel Plant and Ambika Prasad Nanda, Head, CSR (Odisha), Tata Steel and awarded the fellowship.

Also present on the occasion were Shanta Sinha, winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award and Founder of MV Foundation, Deep Joshi, winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award, Director of Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) and co-founder of PRADAN, a well-known NGO, Padmashri Dr Tulasi Munda, a noted social activist in Odisha, Joe Madiath, Founder of Gram Vikas, a well-known NGO based in Odisha, Prof Trilochan Shastry, former dean, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, Amitabh Sarangi, Founder and CEO of International Development Enterprises (India) and Biren Ramesh Bhuta, Chief, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Tata Steel.

Speaking on the occasion, Ghadai appreciated the efforts of Tata Steel in encouraging the future generation to pursue education through Jyoti Fellowship. The awardees included one student pursuing B.Tech, 11 undergraduates, 108 high school students and 232 school students from Standard VIII to X. The top six winning students of Fellowship written exam were awarded tabs.

This year’s fellowship included cash, tablets, certificates and wrist watches (only for Standard VIII students). The cash amount of the fellowship was Rs 3,750 (Class VIII), Rs 4,500 (Class IX), Rs 4,500 (Class X), Rs 8,500 (Intermediate), Rs 8,500 (Undergraduate), Rs 10,000 (Diploma) and Rs 25,000 (B. Tech) per annum. Cash awards and certificates of merit were given to all of them on the occasion.

This is for the 5th consecutive year that the fellowship was awarded to students in Kalinganagar. So far, 1322 students have benefitted from Jyoti Fellowship. While 141 High School students were awarded the fellowship in 2011-12, 197 High School students were awarded the fellowship in the subsequent year. The fellowship was awarded to 272 students in 2013-14 and 360 students in 2014-15.
