Jajpur: A youth was arrested today for allegedly raping a minor girl in Chandikhole area in the district, police said today. The accused, identified as Mangulu Pradhan, 31 of Paikarapur village was taken into custody after the girl filed a written complaint with Barachana police and alleged that she was picked up from Chandikhole bazaar, kept in confinement and sexually assaulted by Pradhan for three consecutive days.

The 15-year old girl from Siha village, a `pala` (folk) singer by profession had gone to Mahanga with her troupe to stage pala (folk theatre) there, police said. She returned to Chandikhole with her troupe and was waiting for an auto-rickshaw to go to her native village after sending her troupe to its destination. Pradhan allegedly picked her up on a motor cycle promising to drop her at Siha village, police said.

Instead of taking the girl to her native village, Pradhan took the girl to his village, Paikarapur, confined her in a room and raped there for three consecutive days. Later, he dropped the girl at Kundala Chhak on Paradeep-Daitary Highway in the wee hours on Monday. The victim lodged complaint on the same day, police said.

"We had recorded the statement of the victim and conducted medical examination on her. As the accused fled from the area, we nabbed him last night after conducting raids at various places. Medical examination of the accused has been conducted today and he is booked under section 376 of IPC," said Deepak Kumar, Superintendent of Police of Jajpur.
