Bhubaneswar: A group of women on Saturday ransacked a newly opened licensed liquor shop in a residential area here, leading to the arrest of persons operating the outlet.

Protesting against the wine shop located in Unit -3 Kharabela Nagar, women in the residential colony vandalised the wine shop run with the license of Alka Co-operative Society, a government body which also runs liquor shops.

The presence of a liquor shop in the residential area evoked extreme emotions among residents in the locality, especially women who barged into the shop and pulled down foreign liquor bottles and systematically destroyed the bottles throwing them on the ground and emptying the cans out.

According to the sources, violating the excise norms, the wine shop started operating from a shop-cum-residence at Kharabela Nagar three days back; which invited strong reactions from a group of women.

After an hour lapsed, police rushed to the spot, seized the wine shop and arrested the employees of the shop and the owner of the house which had rented out the wine shop.

Stating that they were facing a lot of problems due to the liquor shop, a local woman said that it also had bad impact on children in the residential colony.
