Kendrapara: Hundreds of women today blocked the Kendrapara-Orat road and staged a hunger strike demanding relocation of two liquor outlets at Angulai Chhak in the district.

The outlets have been established illegally and despite repeated appeals to the district administration for their relocation no action has been taken, the agitators alleged.

"The shops are located close to schools, temples and the Angulai panchayat office. People in general and particularly women are facing difficulties. We do not want any liquor outlets here in the Angulai panchayat,” said Durgabati Pradhan, Sarpanch of Angulai panchayat.

Expressing similar views, Madhabananda Patra, another local, stated the shops established have been violating the rules. "Though we had appraised the district administration about the matter, all pleas fell on deaf ears," rued Patra.

Meanwhile, a minor scuffle ensued between the women protestors and police personnel when a few of them tried to barge into the shops. A platoon of police has been deployed to prevent further deterioration in the law and order situation, informed a senior police official.
