Under trial Odia youth dies under mysterious condition in Mumbai jail

Mumbai: An under trial Odia youth lodged at the Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai died under mysterious circumstances on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Batakrushna Swain of Chhanda village under Mahakalpada block in Kendrapara district.

20-year-old Swain had gone to Mumbai to work as a driver. However he was arrested on March 12 on charges of smuggling ganja and later sent to the jail, sources said.

The jail authorities informed that Swain suddenly complained of chest pain yesterday and was rushed to a hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, Swain’s brother who met him in the jail on Thursday, informed that his brother was being physically tortured and assaulted by some jail inmates. Swain has asked his brother’s help to deal with the problem.

Few hours after the meeting, I received the news of his ill health and later death, said Swain’s brother.
