Bhubaneswar: Tension prevailed at Capital hospital here today after a new born died due to alleged medical negligence.

Kiran Kalia of Pipili in Puri district was admitted to the hospital for delivery last night.

However, she had to stay on the hospital verandah due to shortage of bed. She gave birth to a baby at the same place in the wee hours today. Relatives of the Kiran alleged that no nurse or doctor attended to her during the labour pain leading to the death of the new born.

"We called the nurses during labour pain. But, they did not pay any heed to our request. Rather, they rebuked us asking us not to disturb them while they were sleeping," a relative of Kiran said.

"If they had to sleep, they should have remained at home. Why are they coming to hospital?" she asked.

The baby was in a good condition, moving in the embryo two/three days back as per the ultrasound report, she added.

"Had they attended to our patient, we would not have lost our child," she rued demanding strict action against the erring staff.

On the other hand, hospital authorities assured the family of action after an inquiry. "The patient got admitted at around 1 am. The new born had breathing problem soon after the birth. He died at around 4.30 am," hospital superintendent Dr, Binod Das said.

"It can only be said after inquiry whether any of our staff had neglected the patien," he added. Action will be taken if their allegation is proved, Das assured.
