Cuttack: President of Ravenshaw University Students` Union, who was wanted in connection with assault of photojournalists in the university campus, has been arrested, police said today.

Union president Harishankar Rout had allegedly led a group of students in assaulting the mediamen brandishing a country-made revolver on Thursday when the latter had gone to the university to cover the group clash between local and foreign students, they said.

At least five FIRs were filed against the student leader by the journalists and he was booked under various sections of IPC and Arms Act.

Journalists had staged a dharana in front of Malgodown police station demanding arrest of the student leader. City DCP A N Sinha on Friday assured that the accused would be arrested soon.

The police said Rout was arrested and produced in the residential court of Cuttack Sadar SDJM from where he was released on bail.

Meanwhile, the situation in Ravenshaw University was also limping back to normal today after an effort was made by the university authorities to remove growing animosity among local and foreign students.

At least five Afghan students were injured, two of them seriously when they were assaulted by local students on a trivial issue.
