Rourkela: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) registered its best-ever performance in major techno-economic parameters in 2011-12. Adherence to operational discipline, continuous process monitoring and improved maintenance practices have made this success possible, RSP sources said.

The Steel Plant recorded lowest ever Coke rate of 529 kg per tonne of Hot Metal and best-ever Specific energy consumption of 6.868 Giga Calorie per tonne of Crude Steel while Coal to Hot Metal ratio came down to 0.966 thereby creating a new record, RSP sources said today.

Besides, production of special steels like Micro alloy steel increased from 2.52 per cent in 2010-11 to 3.64 per cent in 2011-12. Medium carbon steel making also rose from 1.89 per cent in 2010-11 to 5.29 per cent in 2011-12, while IS 10748 Grade V steel chemistry too was customized.

In the 80 Tonne Hot Metal Ladle, highest yearly average life of 682 casts was achieved ? and highest ever campaign life of 720 casts was also recorded in April?11. In 140 Tonne Hot Metal Ladle, highest yearly average life of 1569.75 casts was achieved which is the best amongst the SAIL Plants.

In SMS-II Converter, highest yearly average life of 5781 blows was recorded, while highest campaign life of 6543 blows was notched up in SMS-II converter. Similarly, in CCM-I Ladle, highest yearly average life of 68.45 heats and highest campaign life of 85 heats were achieved during the year.

In Steel Foundry, highest campaign life of 375 heats was achieved in the Electric Arc Furnace. Specific refractory consumption clocked 9.59 Kg per Tonne of Crude Steel which is again the best amongt all SAIL Plants.
