Berhampur: A rare snake has been recovered from a person who has kept it illegally in his possession at Nimapadara in Ganjam district, a forest official said on Wednesday.

The six feet-long banded krait, locally known as Rana, was rescued from the house of one Dillip Bisoi by forest officials.

They released it in the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubanswara on Tuesday, Divisional Forest Officer (Ghumusar South) R C Sethi said.

The banded krait, a deadly poisonous reptile, was on the verge of extinction and it was placed under the schedule four of the wildlife protection Act, the DFO said.

Bisoi was arrested and during interrogation he had said that he was keeping the snake to sell it at a price of about Rs four lakh, police said.
