Bhubaneswar: The Inspector General (IG) of Prisons today directed
an official of a DIG cadre to investigate into the death of an Under Trial Prisoner
(UTP) at Jharpada jail here. The investigating officer was asked to submit the
probe report by tomorrow.

An UTP Laxmidhar Nanda of Birapratappur village in Puri
district who was taken to jail custody after Excise Intelligence and
Establishment Bureau arrested him on September 14 fell ill on September 16
following which jail authorities treated him at the jail hospital. Later, he was shifted to Capital hospital on September 25 when his health condition
deteriorated. However, he succumbed to his disease at the hospital yesterday.

On being informed about the death of Laxmidhar, his family
members today alleged that the jail authorities did not informed the family
members when the UTP was undergoing treatment at the hospital. The family was
kept in dark about his health condition in the prison cell, keen of the
deceased alleged. Even, the officials did not apprise the family when Laxmidhar
was arrested, Pratima Nanda, wife of the deceased, said, alleging that her
husband was murdered intentionally.

On the other hand IG Shyamsundar Hansda said that the jail authorities have not
received any such complaint from the family members.

 Police started
investigation into the matter after registering a case of unnatural death. DCP
Niteenjit Singh wrote to Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate seeking a judicial
